View Full Version : Mercenaries signup

Right, this is the signup for the war/mercenaries thread I've been asking for interest about. The backstory is currently being spell-checked and I have to go work, so in the meantime, here's what you need to know.
All of you are working for the ICA (International Contract Agency) as "military advisors". Your pre-Agency backgrounds may vary. While you may make up your own weapons and organizations as needed, nobody should have CDS-47 Armor Piercing High Explosive Carnage Delivery Systems with auto-loading and fax modem. As in the signup, ballistic weapons only, they may be slightly advanced over present-day stuff, but rememebr that as a mercenary outfit, you probably won't have access to the state of the art for the campaign, which is advanced a few years ahead of ours. Keep it semi-realistic, aright?
Most of you are veterans at this kind of thing, so I won't insult you by laying everything out in front of you like you were some 3 post noob. For those of you who are, in fact, 3 post noobs, start learning.
I only really need the following two pieces of information from everyone to do my job properly. Everything else is, as WH40K players say, "fluff". If you want to add more, more power to you, and rememebr that DMs like keeping interesting characters alive.
Name: (self-explanatory)
Specialty: (Something you're good at, to the point where your entire character can be described by his specialty. Examples: Acrobatic, Bruiser, Sniper, Stealthy, Evil-Minded Son of a Bitch, Tech Genius, Cunning Linguist, etc. Describe the specialty too, so I can think of ways in which you can use it.)
Background: (Where you were from before you joined the Agency. Everyone will have at least an above-average level of competence in all soldiering skills, being that the Agency trains its recruits quite well, though they still won't be on par with elite forces)
Krylo

Name: Jack Dawson
Age: 28
Specialty: Stealth. Jack uses his CIA training for infiltration, disguise, and keeping himself under cover even in hostile situations (picking out a good sniper nest)
Background: Jack Dawson is an Ex-CIA operative in their Black Ops division, or, in other words, he was a CIA Ghost. A professional assassin. He managed to retire legally, although he is not at liberty to mention the true nature of his training, his previous jobs, or anything other than that he was, indeed, a member of the CIA Black Ops division. He's not even allowed to use the word 'ghost'. Most likely Jack Dawson isn't even his real name. They allowed (forced) him to retire after a mere 4 years in the agency because he was too 'hot'. He would regularily take unneccessary risks, and enter into combat situations that he would be better served calling in back up for. That he managed to survive can only be attributed to luck. It was for these same reasons that he signed up with ICA, where he is still considered a rookie.
Weapons: Jack has been trained in many manners of weapons, and often uses guns from his downed opponents, but he is particularily fond of high-powered accurate rifles suitable for sniping, SMGs with sound and flash suppressors, flash grenades, and his side-arm, a silenced .16mm.

Oh, and krylo can be assumed to be a co-DM. He does NOT get random murder powers. JAD might be a co-DM too, since he's experienced and all.

Yah. Dante laid down the law. No random killings... so if I want to murder someone it has to be patterned.
Alright everyone whose name starts with B, prepare youselves! Or any other letters of the alphabet.

Name: Ray Aran
Specialty: Sniper, he has an incredible shot and can find the target fast too.
Background: Ray served in the military and was considered a hero in several battles. In one, he had been stationed to snipe out their snipers, and was involved in what you could call a sniper battle. He and an enemy sniper spotted eachother at the same time, and they both shot. He hit the enemy sniper in the forehead, killing him, but he was hit in his left eye, luckily at an angle which didnt harm his brain, but he now wears an eye patch over that eye.

Name: Arc
Specialty: Analyst- He can analyze a given situation extremely quickly and come up with the probabilities for any given action extremely quickly.
Background: Arc was a member of a top secret military project designed to increase the analysis abilities of field commanders. The project was extremely successful, until the founder attempted to get more recruits through illegal means. Its funding was pulled and the project went under shortly after. The members of the project were all given billets in various army regiments, but Arc deserted shortly after getting his assignment. He was a grifter until one of the Agency's people spotted him in a bar fight.

Name: Leonardo Sparks
Specialty: Technological genius and Information Technition
Background: Leo is an anomoly for the squad. He's a near sighted skinny white guy. While in terms of endurance and cleverness he can match any squad member if not surpass them, in a fight he's mostly useless, except as a coordinator for assaults. The voice you hear on the radio telling you you have three incoming soldiers is his. The one who alerts the team when you're wounded is he. He's also the man who will keep the advanced techologies in tip top condition.
Leo doesn't know much about his past. His first memory is running away from abusive foster parents. He doesn't remember how he got there, nor does he care to go back to ask. He lied about his age and signed up for the agency. While he's not a soldier, he has his uses.

Name: Strythe
Specialty: Demolitions. He likes to blow up things, and is very good at it.
Background: Strythe was a very prosperous "assistant" to a criminal organization in the bowels of new york. His superiors woulld tell him his target and that target was inconspicuously blown to smithereens. After a major bust on the organization he was put into jail. The Agency offered to get him out of jail if he would come work for them. He obviously agreed. He doesn't really care which side he is on as long as he recieves cash.

Name: Gond
Speciality: Berserker- High powered guns with large explosions. Runs into battles quite recklessly. You want to destroy your enemies in one big bang? Gond is your man. Now if only his recklessness can be controlled
Background: At the age of 5 he was put into an orphanage where he was immediately taken to a mysterious lab. There, they tested him to create the ultimate human. The tests backfired and gave him a disease that mutates a part of his body. He escaped whilst they were making a permanent antidote. This war was an opportunity for him to get the vaccine so he can return to normal. With his body slowly changing and him losing control of his mind, time is running out, and he needs that antidote. Even if he has to kill for it...

Garud: That character wouldn't survive long. He runs into battle without thinking and consequently gets shredded into little strips of meat by enemy fire, which we then roast over open flame and use to prolong our rations. Berserking only works when your opponent doesn't have fully automatic assault rifles.

Dammit. Krylo singles me out as first murder target before I can even sign up. Son of a... Anyway, here goes nothing:
Name: Harold Watson
Specialty: Although Harold is trained to pilot any standard vehicle on land, in the air, and underwater as well as wield most modern weapons, his practice first and foremost is with driving.
Background: Harold used to be a stunt driver back before they used manniquens and RC technology for movie stunts. When the technology advanced, his career was over, so he signed up with the military to get new skills. Of course, they took his former training and fine tuned him into a transport driver extremely skilled at dodging enemy fire (slower moving stuff, no bullets) on even the worst terrain. He is also very capable of driving carefully and stealthily, he prefers to be loud and reckless, which also cost him his job. While transporting an elite squad to an enemy compound, an awry stunt in combination with his teammates' refusal to wear seat belts caused them to be thrown out of the transport and into a minefield, where they all died. This got him a dishonerable discharge, and from then on he has been working for the ICA.

Name: John (I'm bad with last names)
Specialty: Weapons Specialist(Military Training)
Background: During his time in the Military, John has been trained identifying specific weaponry and their potential. He led his team through some of the strangest missions ever. He had sent a team of soldiers to secure a weapon of massive destruction only to get the team killed. In his defense he has never failed a single mission. He trusts his team to lead them to victory and complete the mission without fail or casualties. He is a very trusting man, but in order to get his trust you must prove yourself. He is very loyal to his team.
Tell me if I need to change anything.

06-07-2005, 09:48 PM
Name: Jason Waine
Specialty: Quick and Messy. Jason is good at up close, usually urban, attacks. He expends as little ammunition as possible, works best with a team, and goes for head-shots when available.
Background: Jason is ex-Navy SEALS, ex-Delta Force, ex-Joint Task Force 2(It's Canadian special forces) and recently ex-RCMP officer. He joined the US Army at 18, and fought to prove himself into the SEALS. He served 3 years there, before he transferred to Delta Force. He served two years there, but became fed-up with the mismanagement. He moved to Canada and got into Joint Task Force 2. After another 2 years being the equivalent of Rainbow Six for Canada, Jason decided he was done with soldiering. He effortlessly got into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and was there for a year before he was kicked out. The reason? He was attacked for police brutality solely because he used his nightstick. He's spent a year teaching at a YMCA, teaching Karate. Overall, he prefers a combination of Krav Maga and Aikido to do his work though. He also prefers to use the classic M4A1 carbine, or the MP10. Due to his time in the RCMP and time teaching Karate, his skills aren't the sharpest they've ever been though Jason remains a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. Out of the battlefield he's actually a very nice caring person.

Name: Only known as the "Twister Champ" or Twister.
Specialty: Acrobatic freelancer - able to defy the nature of the human body to some degree. Flexible in her jobs. Literally. Able to disarm hostile opponents even when they're up behind her with a gun pressed to her head. Not such a bad shot at semi-automatic weapons either.
Background:
Twister was first found in the circus, performing death-defying stunts and flexible odd-jobs now and then. She retired early, however, tight-rope walking and body distortion not cut out for her tastes, even though she retained her abilities to manipulate her body to a phenomenal degree.
Her expertise with most semi-automatic weaponry came shortly afterwards, when, unable to find a suitable job, she joined a local city gang. Because of their often random weaponry supply, she had to make do with whatever she had to get her jobs done within the gang, and became rather interested in a couple of the martial arts available to her. She also became involved in a lot of guerrilla and terrorist activities when her income dropped, and has quite an arsenal of army tactics from her experiences in the run-ins.
Several years later, Twister, then 20, was arrested in a drug raid and jailed for an indeterminable amount of time, until the ICA recognised potential in the hardened - yet rather flexible - criminal. She's been in the agency ever since.
EDIT: You are evil. She likes twister, not sex :p

Everyone seems to like being a sniper. This might not be good.
And RR, I'd suggest just going with acrobatic. And the character concept of an Olympic-level gymnast makes me wonder exactly how flexible she'll be in bed, especially with that Twister Champion title of hers. ;)
RMB's, SS' and RR's bios are otherwise fine. SS in particular has an interesting specialty.

Well, if you're looking for a Rambo-esque character, I'd advise just making him be a weapons buff who's trigger happy. By definition, running ahead in a wartime situation = certain death, so just avoid that.

I'll make him a tech gen. if that'll make it a little more interesting I don't have a problem with that (a little tweak here and there)...otherwise its your decision.
I'll change him when I get the time to.

New arbitrary ruling - since I do not like multiple people witht he same specialties and overly broad specialties, henceforth, only one of each kind of specialty among the characters. RMB, try something else, since JAD is already the Tech specialist.
Aaaaand, the backstory... I understand it demonizes Malaysia. Too bad. I don't ahte or intend to offend any Malaysians, but it's true that relations between the two countries are shaky IRL. I'm just adapting the situation to my purposes. SO don't take it too seriously.
Preamble
Singapore is an island nation, on the southern tip of the Malayan Peninsula. It was originally a major hub for trade between England and China, and became a strongpoint of British power until World War 2, when it was conquered by the Japanese.
Singapore joined Malaysia as a subsidiary province in 1963 and declared its own independence in 1965, a deed that rankled in Malaysian nostrils as an act of insufferable arrogance, only compounded by the fact that Singapore managed to thrive despite its inability to produce food or water in any significant amounts. Soon, even though it was miniscule compared to Malaysia, Singapore was becoming a major economic power.
The only respite Malaysia had was the fact that they were the major suppliers of drinking water to Singapore, a fact which they never failed to bring up at any diplomatic summits. Singapore bore this insult in silence and gladly paid the exorbitant rates Malaysia demanded, until one day, Singaporean scientists perfected an ultra-efficient water desalination process.
The first plant built by the Singaporeans was enough to completely replace the supply from Malaysia, and it was not without some glee that Singapore announced that they would no longer be purchasing water from Malaysia.
So it was misfortune that a hawkish prime minister had recently ascended it power in Malaysia. It was bad luck that Malaysia had suffered a major drought recently, and all their money had gone into buying more food for their people. The final straw came when Singapore declared that they would no longer buy water, thus removing a major source of income for the Malaysians. Right-wing politicians pointed out Singapore's capacity to generate water and the riches they had stockpiled. They reminded the people of how Singapore had abandoned them once.
Forty-six years of pent-up tension came to a head. The Malaysian PM declared war, and within hours of that announcement, tanks were rolling down the Causeway connecting the two countries. To their credit, Singapore's army fought back like raging tigers - they managed to push 50 kilometers into Malaysia before being brutally repulsed by sheer weight of numbers. The Malaysian reserves poured into the battle, and Singapore's forces were rapidly forced back into the residential areas they were supposed to protect. The war was a hot and brutal one, the defenders making the attacks pay in blood for every inch of land they took. But numbers favored the Malaysians and eventually, the Singaporean defense lines began to fail.
In desperation, the Singapore government has opened their coffers and requested the aid of mercenary troops to supplant their beleaguered forces. In response, the International Contract Agency has dispatched a team of operatives to assay the situation and determine if the operation warrants the presence of more agents. At the same time, rival mercenaries have landed on Singaporean shores, and some are already assisting in the defence of the country.
But faced with a nation over a thousand times their size, outnumbered over fifty to one, can Singapore survive, even with the aid of the best men money can buy?
This is where you come in...

Name: Gordon Sheean
Age: 32
Specialty: Interpretor/Linguist. He knows many "common" languages and has studied most major alphabets, which means he can try to decipher the meaning of some languages if they use an alphabet similar to the one he knows. To keep things simple, I'll use the d20 Modern languages/groups to specify the specialty. Gordon can read, write, and speak in English, French, Italian, Mandarin, German, and Russian. He has a grasp on the Romance, Slavic, Germanic, and Chinese group, and can use his linguistic talents to improvise in languages he has not studied extensively. By no means does this make him skilled to any measure comparable to the actual languages he's fluent in.
Background: Gordon always enjoyed communicating with people as a child. When he heard a language and didn't understand it, he would always pester his parents to teach him it. Of course, his parents weren't even bilingual, and Gordon's curiousity carried on into adolescence. He majored in World Languages in university with a minor in History. After graduation he took on multiple, usually mundane jobs as an interpretor or translator. He decided he needed a little more excitement, and the opportunity arose when his application to the Agency was accepted. The downside to the new job was that he had no combat training whatsoever up until that point. He spent the better part of a year concentrating on improving his soldiering skills, and due to the excellent programs offered by the Agency, he is now a half-decent grunt. Gordon has whatever skill in soldiering the Agency had to offer, but he has no combat specialty, his strength is in his linguism.

His father was a construction worker and overhearing him talk about arcitechture constantly allowed him to pick a bit up. After high-school, he needed money for college and joined the Marines. Or she could grab onto the cannon of a tank, backflip onto it, run down the barrel, drop a flash grenade into the cockpit, hop in, take out the drivers with small weapons fire while they're stunned, hop back out, and let the driver have it.
Rhiya Ravenwing
06-13-2005, 10:30 PM

06-15-2005, 07:46 PM
Well, Rhiya, driving a tank is hard as hell. You could keep the pilots alive at gunpoint, but that'd be dangerous, and kinda ineffective (most soldiers wouldn't fire on their friends even with a gun placed to their head... I mean, would you shoot your friend if someone was aiming at you? Maybe... but I'm sure most of us would at LEAST hesitate). However, if you kill all the people piloting and then call someone whose speciality deals with tanks (weapons boy could shoot it well enough, but probably not drive too hot, while vehicles could drive pretty well but it'd probably take some work to figure out the cannon), there's now a tank on our side. It promotes team work, or something.
You could also just jump out and leave the empty tank, trusting one of us to get it, or toss an actual grenade (instead of flash) into it and destroy the controls along with the pilots. Maybe detonate the ammunition too, and blow the whole thing up. Oooh... fireworks.
Red Mage Black
06-15-2005, 08:56 PM
Well, I could teach someone how to pilot the tank. It's just a matter of learning the language then teaching them how to use the controls.

Here is my bio.
Name: Deren Rean
Age: 30
Description: Deren is a relatively tall man with light brown hair which sticks up on his head. He has dark black eyes.
Specialty: Cartography/ Lesser Topography, Deren is a master in writing and reading maps and, to a lesser extent understanding the terrain it describes. He always carries around a laptop, with all of his maps on it. He also carries a small bag filled with sealed waterproof cylinders, which hold all his spares. There is a pistol hidden in one of the cylinders.
Background: Deren began his career as a common soldier in the (insert random country here) army. However soon after he completed his training he was captured and sent to a prison facility. He spent the next five years of his life in there, spending his time drawing maps of the place on any strip of paper he could find to give him something to do. Finally the place he was being kept in was captured. Unfortunately by a different army. Deciding against staying with his "rescuers", Deren escaped. After the incident Deren decided to continue working with maps so, for the next three years he perfected his skill in creating maps, as well as getting a lesser skill in knowing terrain. After that time Deren decided to return to military life and joined ICA.
