View Full Version : Serious [adult swim] Question...

Alright. I've read a bunch of things of people ranting about certain shows on [adult swim], and I've come up with a serious question.

Am I the only person who actually likes Tom Goes to the Mayor? I seriously don't see what there is to dislike about this show.

When I saw the first show that had Tenacious D guest starring, I was prepared for an awesome new show. However, when I learned that JB and KG would not be appearing regularly, the show lost much of its appeal. I find all of the characters, hold the Mayor, to be uninteresting. Tom's wife (who's name escapes me at the moment), reminds me far too much of the hideous abomination that my uncle just married before New Years, so it's hard to watch any scenes with her in it. On Christmas, she wore a skirt. Oh God, the horror. I almost lost my dinner all over the presents. So, that topic hits a bit too close to home for me.

Sweet Jesus, I can see it when I close my eyes! It burns! Please, kill me now!

The animation is horrendus(sp?) and it's not that funny in my opinion. Whenever they use actual people, they look...the words I would express are just too colorful(wink). My reasoning is that if the graphics are worse than Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Sealab, at least make it funnier or more enjoyable and Tom cleary excels in neither.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the animation is as bad as you say. Sure, it's different, but that doesn't make it bad. And I think it's funny on a different sort of level than most of the other [adult swim] shows. And besides, animation quality generally has nothing to do with whether people like a show or not. Look at South Park.

You are not alone in your appreciation towards the show Tom Goes to the Mayor. It is a show that is great in its complete akwardness. Initially, I found it a little dry... but that became the show's charm and it just grew on me. The style and humor is just so much more original than anything I've seen on that network, and it's quickly becoming one of my favourites.

Here's to another season! *raises wine glass*

I have not seen this show but when I was at an anime convention in Jersey thier was a panel about Adult Swim and the panelist hated it but then asked who in the room liked it and about 5 of the 75 people liked it.

Joy. Tom's Wife is Joy. And the show is absolutely hillarious. It's a dry sarcastic and cynical comedy. It's not the "Oh wow, that's silly!" that Sealab has going for it, although there's definatley a good amount of silly as well. It's more of a quiet tongue in cheek kind of comedy. It's more... I don't know... sophisticated, but on an extremely silly level.

this is a pretty bad show, at first i thought it may get better, then it got worse. Now I dont hate it as much as my brother, he leaves the room do to its crappyness, i mean really, he runs from the show.

The animation style just anoyes me, and bad animation does affect how people like it, south park isnt that bad, its paper cut out, it dosnt look like a pre show mock up, like tom does.

its not the worse show on it, but it is one of the reasons i dont watch sunday adult swim anymore

I tried to give it a chance. I even refrained from changing the channel after swearing off the show because a friend told me to watch some of the newer episodes.

The show has its moments, but for the most part it's just randomness that they try to play off as humor. Here's a hint people who make Adult Swim: random != funny! The same goes for that crapfest 12 oz. Mouse. I might be able to enjoy it if I was really high, but I don't do drugs so the show's appeal is lost on me. Get rid of these shows and give us more Venture Bros!

What Daecrist said, only replace Venture Bros. with anime.

The show just works too much on the awkward pauses and ridiculous ideas - it's stuff I've all seen before. I'll give it another shot, but I highly doubt that there will be a reversal of faith.

I second Daecrist's call for more Venture Bros., but I'm up for more anime as well. I never thought I would get hooked to an anime show, but I love Full Metal Alchemist and occassionally I watch Inuyasha as well.

Tom Goes to the Mayor never did much for me, I'm sorry to say, but it's still probably better than Robot Chicken.

Tom Goes to the Mayor basically proves that non sequitur isn't always funny.

How bad does a show have to be for Tenacious D not to be able to save it?

i think that either yu yu hakusho(unedited) or naruto(unedited) should take TGTTM's place.

naruto because it is definetely gonna be screwed over by cartoon network. or is it 4kids network??

i personally like the different anime shows that are aired on adult swim. thats mostly why i watch it.

i havent seen any Tom episodes partly because i really dont like the animation. it just makes me feel like the creators were just too lazy to make better styled figures.

well about the replacing TGTTM with an anima show, well you couldnt do it. Well not just a straight trade. Since it is 15 min long and ventrue or the anima is 30+ sometimes on anima unedited. So they could swing it if they maybe droped another 15 min show or one of the 15 min shows they play twice drop one of the airs.

They should take it out and take family guy and american dad with it, also milk chan.

TGTTM is okay, but I don't really like any of the comedy ones.

Get rid of Family Guy? Ludicrous! Other than the fact that you can just watch new episodes on FOX.

I don't really like any of the crappy comedy types except for Aqua Teen Hungerforce (which I could live without), so they could get rid of all of them and put on some more anime. I mean, get rid of the entire comedy block. Seriously. Most are cheap and they aren't even outrageous like South Park.

Although I have to admit the only new anime I'm really, really enjoying is Full Metal Alchemist. Ghost In The Shell, s-CRY-ed, and Samurai Champloo are okay, but strangely I don't like them in a "wow I gotta watch this" sort of way, which is strange for me since I usually gravitate towards the more adult anime (not that Full Metal Alchemist isn't adult, but it and s-CRY-ed are more on the cartoony side).

If they're going to drop anything it should be Futurama. We've seen every episode of that how many times now? I can quote certain episodes word for word along with the show, and I don't even watch adult swim every night, nor have I seen Futurama anywhere else. It's time to drop it. If you really want to watch every episode more than 20 times it's time to invest in a DVD player.

TGTTM's animation is part of its comedy. The whole thing relies on quirkiness and Tom's position as a complete loser who just won't give up. I find it's pulled off rather well, and many times has a quiet tongue-in-cheek humor to it that the other shows lack.

I think the humor in Tom is at a slightly higher bar than Aqua Teens or Sealab. It relies on more complicated set ups and jokes, and it doesn't work for some people.

If Aqua Teen is to Friends as Tom is to Frasier. I think that's a pretty good way of putting it.

Their only good shows are in this all mighty list (beholdeth!):
-Futurama
-Family Guy
-Venture Bros.
-Aqua Teen Hunger Force
-Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law
-Robot Chicken
-Full Metal Alchemist
-Inuyasha

Any other shows are either too new to pass any true judgment on (even though Saturday night anime is really confusing most of the time, but... it's new... whatever...) or have failed, in a list that'd make whoever came up with that opening scene of the first episode in the new season of Family Guy flee from the room in horror.

[DISCLAIMER:] I'm not saying if you like any other shows, you're wrong. Just fair warning to prevent some dumb annoying thing some rabid fan-thing calls a winning argument for themselves, even though I don't think NP forum goers would do that.

I am mainly for the anime purists, with the exception of Family Guy, most of the others are too slapstick for my sense of humor . . . strange . . . family guy not slap stick? *shrug*

All of the Animes I like, so they can stay, just bring more onto me is what I say

Let me throw out another question. Was I the only one attracted to the show by its animation? When I first saw commercials for it I was like "Wow, that looks different. Maybe I should give it a shot." When I finally had a chance to watch a few episodes, I found it was funnier than Futurama. I love the show now, and I don't really see anything flawed about it. The situations are hilarious because they're so ridiculous. The bronzing episode, the land mine episode, the Porking With the Petersons episode, all classics.

I can understand how the show could lose viewership, though. Some of the humor is high-brow. If people tune in expecting to see Futurama or Family Guy humor, they're going to be dissapointed. But, I expected something completely different, which is exactly what I got.

[Edit] And in my opinion, Sealab should go. And Aqua Teen Hunger Force barely makes the cut. It seems that anything out of Japan outdoes everything else CN puts in their lineup.

yeah, pretty much.. :)

i wish i wasnt saying this, but i also think futurama should be taken out. even though i love the show, everything HAS been played atleast a million times. Super Milk Chan...i have a huge feeling that NO ONE likes this show. enough said, it should be taken out. family guy should stay because they usually show different new episodes than FOX.

WHAT?! you didnt add fooly cooly?! i cant believe this! what an outrage! doo dah durgh dhie doi..uhh just ignore that..i just felt like saying it..:)

anyway, i personally like most of the action or comedy animes on adult swim, so i think they should add more.

If you think np goers are above that, you havnt read enough of the forums, I think some make a life out of doing that.

I like futurama, and even though I have every episode, and seen them a sickining amount of times, i still watch it on adult swim.

I havnt seen anything on sunday adult swim, or really much of any other besides saturday, or thursday if I miss saturday. Its just family guy is bad, american dad infureates (i cant spell, I know this you dont have to tell me) me, and well nothing else intrests me enough to watch much of it any more. If tgttm has gotten better in late I wouldnt now since i havnt seen it in a long time since well if i wanted to i would have to battle my brother who for some reason thinks it is the comady anti christ for some reason.

I am waiting for matt mallenario (creator of Aqua teen) to get off his ass and finish 12 Oz mouse and Squidbillies. The key to their humor is the utter chaos which surrounds them. and If you read between the lines, there is some shit in sealab and aqua teen that is pretty highbrow, not that they dont invalidate it with a fart joke. Tom, in my opinion, mixes media too much and doesn't do it for me. (except for the pipe smoking episode and the bear trap one, those were okay. I think the problem with it is that it was rushed to production and the jokes werent fine tuned (read: FUNNY)
