Hi, my mom said that she'd get me a tablet for my birthday and I was wondering if anyone could recommend one?

I use a Wacom 4.6. It's pretty easy to configure and install. It goes for about $120 for the 4"x6". But it's also pretty old, so it may not longer be in production. My suggestio would be to go to the Wacom site (http://wacom.com/) and look at the tablets they have available.

Searching ebay, (http://computers.listings.ebay.com/Input-Devices_Tablets_W0QQfclZ3QQfromZR11QQsacatZ3680QQs ocmdZListingItemList) I found a 9x12 Wacom for $100, but an Aiptek of the same size for only $30. How are they?

Dunno anything about Aiptek from experience, but looking at their product site, it seems like their tablets are more for office people who want to make really bitchen' Powerpoint presentations every now and then -- their tablets are really cheap, but that's not necessarily a good thing. Wacom tablets are expensive, but you really do get your money's worth out of them -- a nice used Intuos would be the better way to go, I think.

I've had a Wacom Intuos2 12x12 for about four years now, and it works exactly as well today as it did when I got it. You have to mess around a good bit with the settings until you get it working just the way you want it, but once you get everything just so, it's awesome. Bigger isn't necessarily better, though -- the only thing I don't like about mine is the awkward size. It feels like I have to move my arm six inches to draw a three inch line, and whether that's actually so or not, it's still pretty uncomfortable after a while. If I ever get a new one, it'll be in a more sensible size like 9x12. But all that really depends on what you're comfortable with -- keep in mind you have to watch what you're doing on your monitor, not on the tablet itself. The Wacom site has a very pretty picture of a model lounging around on the couch with a tablet, but if the model's drawing anything more complicated than obscene stick figures I'll eat my stylus like a hot dog.
