View Full Version : I got a question for ya...

Alright, chances are this has been discussed before and I missed it, or maybe it's common knowledge, but I know just a little more than jack squat about Final Fantasy. The only one I've played is FFVII. Now, in FFVII there are two characters at the beginning: Biggs and Wedge.

Biggs and Wedge are Luke Skywalker's wingmates when he flew down the Death Star trench.

QUESTION: Coincidence, or is one of the franchises alluding to the other?

Ok go.

Biggs and Wedge are in every Final Fantasy, arnt they? oh and they make an apperance in Chrono Trigger. i think the people who made the FF series are, *gasp* nerds, and just wanted to make a Starwars reference.

I think Johnny Socko may be right on how they make a very small cameo in many FF's. I can't seem to remember where they came in at in FFVII. I do know they were at the beginning of FFVI piloting some trendy MagiTeck Armor.

And now that I think about it. Biggs and Wedge were also reoccuring lackeys in FFVIII.

Biggs and Wedge are just reoccuring things in Final Fantasy, like use of the name Cid. Chocobos, and a few other things. Its just things that add nostalgia to the Final Fantasy games. maybe not even nostalgia..but its just something you'll recognize and say "Hey, this is the new incarnation of them. Although I could swear it was Vicks and Wedge..

Nope, it's Biggs and Wedge. And I can only remember them in three of the FF (FFVI, FFVII, and FFVIII).

In the original US release of FF3, it was Vicks instead of Biggs. I can't remember if they changed that in Anthologies or not.

Yeah thats why..Im still playing The FF3 cart I snagged from gamestop for 20 bucks.(unfortunately I couldn't get the 20 dollar copy of Chrono Trigger they had at the time

I don't remember who they were in FF4 or FF1, In FF6, they were the magitek (and one was vicks on the cartridge, but that was a translation error thing), in FF7... uh, I don't really remember either, I think they were either some of the shinra guards near the base of the tower or were in cloud's flashback in the beginning, eh, FF8 they were the returning lackeys you kept beating up, FF9 Can't remember again (need to replay some of these games apparently... my encyclopedic knowledge is slipping), and in FFX they were a pair of blitzball stadium guards (and you could scout them as players too).

And yah, they're in every FF game, same as Cid.

IHateMakingNames

FF7, Biggs and Wedge were the AVALANCHE guys that died

Krylo
01-04-2004, 03:41 PM
Ahh yah, that's right. See, I need to replay, I can't even remember that. Stupid me. Weren't the FF9 ones a pair of the pluto knights? Or am I way off again?

The_Bear

I'm pretty sure your right with the pluto knight thing. I can remember Biggs and Wedge in FFVI, FFVII, and FFIX. I never played FFXIII, so I have no idea if they were in there. They also made a cameo in Chrono Trigger in one of the funhouse games at the Millenium Fair, and I'm pretty sure I rememeber them from FFV.

BMHadoken

I think theyve only been in all the FF games since 3 or 4...remember, there wasnt a Cid, hell, even a chocobo in FF 1...

01-04-2004, 04:25 PM
You're right. Biggs and Wedge were two of the people in one of the Tent of Horrors games. Oh, it's going to kill me until I remember who the 3rd one was.

Krylo
01-04-2004, 04:37 PM
Piette was the third one.

And yah, they probably weren't in until FF3 or so, FF1 had nothing except arylon the dancer (they should have made her a recurring character. That'd be cool... she could be in a mental institute in some game, drugged into thinking she's a dancer, behind a theater scene in another one, etc.). But does anyone remember who they were in FF4?

Ofi's guide to Biggs and Wedge! (On the PS1 & 2 FF's, anyways)

FFVII: Biggs was the skinny, green clad guy in AVALANCHE. He had a bandana as well. He played the tough guy. Wedge was the chubby fellow in the yellow. He played the sensitive one. Go figure.

FFVIII: These guys fought with Squall and friends twice in this game. Once, on the top of a high-tech tower on Squalls first ever SeeD mission, and again inside a prison. If I recall right, Wedge was the red captain sort, and Biggs was the soldier of lower rank, but was much smarter than Wedge.

FFIX: This, I have no idea. I don't recall seeing Biggs or Wedge in FFIX. Fill in the blank for me, heh.

FFX: Biggs and Wedge were guards in Luca. You could even higher them for Blitzball! (They weren't very good, though.)

CelesJessa

In FFIX, they were Pluto knights, I believe.

And in FFVI, they were the two begining Magitek Knights (but it WAS Vicks instead of Wedge in the original release for the SNES)

I don't remember any Biggs/Vicks or Wedge in any of the FFs before FFVI... I remember Cid from FFIV though.

Also, have you noticed that most all of the Cids are inventors or control some sort of big-deal machinary, if not the airship?

IHateMakingNames
01-04-2004, 07:14 PM
Cid and Airship are always together, expect for FFVI...

CelesJessa
01-04-2004, 07:16 PM
Cid wasn't with the airship in FFVIII was he? (or maybe I need to re-play that game to refresh my memory.

IHateMakingNames
01-04-2004, 07:17 PM
It wasn't an airship... He was the pilot (Or stood next to the pilot) of the flying garden... Which is the FFVIII version of an Airship

CelesJessa
01-04-2004, 07:19 PM
ah, yes. Until you got the Ragnarok airship. I remember now. Does anyone remember what the Cid in FFV does? I can't remember at all.

IHateMakingNames
01-04-2004, 07:54 PM
I think FFV Cid might be one of the Libary people... (Is there a libary, or some other place that I might be getting confused as a libary in FFV?)

CelesJessa
01-04-2004, 08:05 PM
Yeah, there's a really big, semi-important library in FFV, so that's probably what you're talking about... I think you're right.

Anyhoo. to get back to the ORIGINAL question of this thread... I think it was just the english translators that made their names Biggs and Wedge, maybe as a salute to Star Wars.

IHateMakingNames
01-04-2004, 08:07 PM
Maybe it's an inside joke...

Maybe they just couldn't think of a name for the characters that are only in the game for a moment, but semi-important, and they accidenly reused the names Biggs and Wedge, so they just kept using it

Still, Cid in FFVI was in charge of mechanically draining espers. So even though he didn't have an airship, he was still mechanically enclined.

In FFV, Cid, and his son Mid, followed you along for much of the game and came to help whenever it was needed.

I haven't played much of the other FF's but I do know the first Cid was in FFII and has been in it ever since. So what about other Cid and Biggs/Wedge cameo's, perhaps in FFXI or FFX-2 or even in Tactics.

IHateMakingNames
01-04-2004, 08:20 PM
Isn't FFT Cid the special character with a gun that can join your team?

FFX-2 is the same Cid as FFX (Obviously...)

FFXI, haven't played, but I am assuming one of the NPC Quest characters is named Cid...

FFTA, no idea, haven't played

Flarecobra
01-04-2004, 08:22 PM
Cid was an airship pilot in FF3j, a mechanic in 4, a scientist/scholor in 5, a scientist in 6, a pilot in 7, and an administrater in 8. Don't know about the others.

And for Biggs and Wedge, I think they wern't around until 6.

BMHadoken
01-04-2004, 08:23 PM
In FFTA Cid is the Grand Judgemaster...but theres no Biggs or Wedge...curious...

IHateMakingNames

Maybe you just missed them, or you weren't paying attention...

BMHadoken
01-04-2004, 08:26 PM
Nope, me and my friend played it and beat it, and neither of us saw either of them...maybe YOU should play the game before questioniong others?

I bought Ikagura instead of FFTA... Once I get some more money (Or just use my own) I will get FFTA...

Krylo

In FFT Cid is Thunder God Cid, the best damn swordsman ever! Actual name, Orlanldu Cidofalas, I believe.

And Biggs/Wedge weren't pluto knights, I just restarted playing FFIX, and the pluto knights are:

Blutzen
Kohel
Laudo
Weimer
Haagen
Bei...something
Mullenkedheim
And there's another whose name I can't remember, but Biggs/Wedge weren't in there.

The_Bear
01-04-2004, 09:24 PM
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure I remember them being Pluto Knights. Maybe not pluto knights, but definetly a knight of some variety. Wait matne they were in the auction house...I have no idea anymore, I'm too confused.

Illuminatus
01-05-2004, 03:15 PM
Umm...well this is all well and good, and I'm sure it's VERY interesting (BTW I do know that Biggs and Wedge were the AVALANCHE dudes who died at the very beginning) but it doesn't REALLY answer my question.

I don't know much about FF. When did the first one with Biggs and Wedge come out? After SW (1977) I would guess, but I dunno.

DO YOU?

IHateMakingNames
01-05-2004, 03:33 PM
Wasn't NES made after 1977?

But I can defiently tell you that the first Biggs and Wedge were put in after SWs

Gerad

I think it's ironic that Biggs and Wedge are always unimportant characters in FF games, but really Biggs was the only one who died right away in Star Wars. Wedge went on to be a leader of Rogue Squadron, was cast in all three movies, is a main character several books after the trilogy, etc.

I agree with whoever said the FF makers were just nerds making a tribute to SW. Maybe Wedge and Biggs will be mentioned in SW Episode 3? (dun dun dun!) I haven't been keeping up with Episode 3 news, it's just a guess.
