what is a good length for signatures? 255 too short? should people learn to edit and be frugal with words? are 4 page long pictures unacceptable?

If you can put pictures in your signature I don't think anyone is taking advantage of it - I don't see how it could be too short... this isn't a essay or a newscolumn.

Pictures have been disabled for as long as this particular NP forum as existed. Also, I agree with the it-can't-be-too-short. I'd rather not have to scroll through posts that aren't even half as long as the posters' signatures.

Ok, so, a brief post like mine is technically only half as tall as my own signature, which I consider to be fairly decently sized, but you know what I meant, I hope. Like when you see a sentence or two and then fifteen quotes and all kinds of useless things under the signature bar.

Sig pictures are going to stay disabled, too. Look at any thread in a place like Gaia Online and you'll see why. Honestly, I think synkr0nized's sig is pretty ideal -- a tidy, tiny little handful of links and one or two brief quotes, and mercifully lacking in obnoxious choices in font formatting. I wouldn't want everyone to have one exactly like it or it wouldn't be as refreshing to see, but people could do worse than to take a hint or two from it.

Mash: Added to the Gaia thing that their mods jump your ass if you're a single PIXEL over their limitations. Yeah, never a good thing. Also, it's too difficult to constantly look through peoples signatures to make sure that they're within standards. No boobs and gore for you, my friends.

I don't think we really want to limit anyones 'creative talents' in their signatures, but honestly, some of them are insane and either stretch the pages or make you scroll for ages.

Hey, I'm a poet and I didn't realise!

Ugh, that is balls-crazy. How on earth do they have the time to monitor something like that on a forum that size?

No idea. But they can let things like persistent flaming, sex talk and porn pictures be swept under the carpet. It's no wonder I don't go there anymore.

Ha ha ha, that is a testament to the reason a lot of people don't go there, I am sure. Me, I never joined and have only heard negatives, especially regarding the intelligence behind most edification.

Moderation on that forum is sometimes downright bizzare these days(though there are still some really good mods too). It didn't used to be like that; hell, I recall a time when we didn't even need moderators over there. I guess all the people make it nearly impossible to mod them all effectively, but it's still irritating to see a bunch of posters with yaoi and all manner of offensive stuff in their sigs, while you're being told to remove Michelangelo's painting of the flood because it depicts "a giant orgy." Sorry, bitter old Gaian here. I don't post there anymore.

On topic: Back when I still posted on gaia, I had a fair sized picture in my sig, but I don't really see the reason for it now. I find it funny that they let you have big pictures, but their character allowance for text is pretty low.

I agree with Mash; something small with maybe a couple of links and quotes is best. I like seeing cool posts quoted occasionally. It's especially irritating when pictures stretch pages.

It was actually a really cool place back when there were only about six thousand users. I had a lot of fun there. Give three million people a chance to chat, however, and chances are the conversation degrades very quickly. I haven't seen anything worthwhile posted there in forever (I still lurk occasionally).

Yeah, the amount of posters has become insane. I signed up a few months after it started and got myself a pretty nice inventory (Yay, bunny slippers!) but I only go there now to check on my commissioned artwork bids and such.

Anyway, woah off topic. ^^

Some Gaia users have troubles, serious troubles with spelling and intelligible conversation. The whole "post in order to earn gold" scheme just leads to latent spamming and one word posts - as well as conversations you can't keep track of.

I like the idea of linking to a sig picture though - I think i'll do that eventually.

Anyway, woah off topic. ^^I apologize in advance, then; perhaps someone could create a thread for discussing Gaia...
Wait, y'know what? I think I'm going to do just that. Go look for it.

But anyway, I think sig images wouldn't be a problem with certain limits, perhaps no more than one image, with a size maximum. I have to wonder if it's possible to get the forum to limit that on its own so the mods wouldn't have to. Just a thought, even though the no-sig-image rule is set in stone.

If a limit can be set for avatars, I'd say the same goes for signatures.

I'm not too sure what exactly we're missing out on without sig images, though.

Anyway, just some random advice: when you quote a conversation, it might be a good idea to put it in a quote box entirely and make the names bold. Multiple quote boxes take up a lot of space.

Also, large fonts are sure to annoy. Especially if they cause a line break.

But I digress. I've always trusted the mods around here, and we've survived this long without them, so I guess I don't really see a need to change the rules.

I'll admit, so long as my little animated avatars stick around. After all, they are pretty much the only place where you can find BM bashing.

As for my sig, I'll admit it's bigger then I like, but with quote boxes you can't exactly (To my knowlage) change the size of them without changing the whole thing.

However, sig pictures are ok, so long as they're tasteful and not huge. The one MT linked would be the limit in my opinion.

yeah sig pictures are pointless, I dont care what clan that your in or what oversized bannar that you think that I should see, its just unnecessary.

They're fun to make, is all - It wouldn't be that bad if it were like the Newgrounds BBS - where there is a fixed size that isn't that extravagent, and the file size isn't that large either.

Although, all text sigs can cause people to be more imaginative.

All very well, but that image took a while to load for me. And if everyone were to have something similar, we'd be in for more of a wait. I used to love having different animated icons or edited pictures in my signature, but I can live without them.

I don't consider them pointless, but rather a supplement to the avatar. I don't like adding words to avatars, so I make a signature image that I feel also expresses myself like my avatar does and add text to that. Also, over the years, mine have gotten progressively smaller, allowing me to actually be more creative due to the smaller canvas.

Of course, your opinion isn't wrong at all. Mine's just different than it.

Unfortunately, I've (we all have, I am sure) come across many "banners" that are ridiculously large, square, and so forth. I've long since gotten over the fact that we don't have them here and am perfectly fine with a link in the sig. Any interested know where it is.

Honestly, I think synkr0nized's sig is pretty ideal -- a tidy, tiny little handful of links and one or two brief quotes, and mercifully lacking in obnoxious choices in font formatting.

That's very kind of you to say so. Thank you.
