It's been a while since we've had one of these. Anyway, here's my desktop from work. Please note that I had to blank out a filename as it was nessessary due to it wasn't ment for your eyes.
And perhaps if it gets popular enough, perhaps a mod could sticky it?
EDIT: Gotta resize this in Photoshop when I get home.......
Well...

I like to keep my desktop simple. It's very Spartan, except for the great background pictures I collect. (i have ~140megs of desktop backgrounds mostly from p2p networks)

remarkably tidy desktop, considering that the top of the desk upon which my computer sits is cluttered and filthy. Our one true robot savior, Gen. Grevious keeps watch over my files when i'm not around.

Flare's first post, when she mentions a file wasn't meant for our eyes, somehow invokes an air of mystery...not that I'm inquiring about secret military operations, or the refurbished UFO, or the plan to open a portal and bring forth the Burning Legion, or anything like that.

Also, one final comment; that last file is from www.leasticoulddo.com, and is an AMAZING trailer for what I hope is a serious start to an animated series based on their comic. *drool*

The actual images I'm using for my desktop currently can be found here:

by some Norwegian fellow calling himself Breeze, they're 3D models of stuff you would find in StarCraft. Its mostly Protoss and Lost Temple terrain, but it works great for desktops!

This is my desktop. It is suitably morose and rainbowish. Notice, if you will, the documents labeled "Schematics" and "Secrets." Intriguing, are not they? That's how I roll.

And, uh, synk... mind elaborating? Any suggestions on what could be better than the orderly little grids Windows makes automatically?

You can just copy the address, and paste it in yourself. As long as you don't click a link it still lets you through. (at least it did for me)

No icons at all, or very few. Or maybe even having small clusters of related icons (like games in a corner, work things in another). Not having the standard taskbar (moving it around, skinning it, etc.). Using different menu systems than the normal.
To be true, this all depends on personal preference. But I'm not alone in the line of thought that an icon-laden, standard desktop setup is "cluttered" or "unclean." Again, this is just one way of thinking about it. But, as I result, I prefer no icons and a menu-driven or Quicklaunch-like bar for access to things over the normal use of a start menu and all kinds of icons.
Hmm, so my post above before this one was probably a mite rude. Sorry for that.

I, once upon a time, used to use a program for that myself. Of the ones I tried, I really liked Winwall (http://www.desktopchanger.com/), as it supported the most formats and had the most options that I liked. I have recommended it to others before, and they have stuck with it. It may be what you want.
As per the system usage statistics, there are various programs and widgets that may suit your interests, including such things as the popular Sysmetrix (http://www.xymantix.com/sysmetrix/) and probably a few Konfabulator widgets (http://widgets.yahoo.com/).
Have fun.
