View Full Version : Pure Fun

This thread is dedicated to those moments of pure, unadulterated fun in gaming. The moments where you may or may not be furthering the plot, but you're having so much fun just being at the controls. The parts where you forget you're playing a game.

Swimming as a Zora in Majora's Mask.

Combat in Wind Waker - It was easy, sure, but it was so fluid, and so beautiful to watch that I hardly even cared. This game was at its best when it put you against five or so Darknuts at a time. And let's not forget the Savage Labyrinth. Yowza.

edit: almost forgot, but just about any Colossus battle from Shadow of the Colossus qualifies.

... The bit in Kingdom Hearts 1, where you learn how to fly, with Peter Pan and shit? That was pretty fantastic.

Chrono Trigger again.

Also 75% of both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy VIII

SotN. All of it from top to bottom[/pun].

The first half of Tales of Phantasia way back in 1998. Then I suddenly just stopped playing it.

All 12 or whatever play throughs of Ocarina of Time.

Millions of hours on GoldenEye, Kirby's Adventure, Mario 1, Zelda 1 and 4, Metroid II and various fighting games.

Using the Sphere Grid on FFX.

All of Suikoden II. Just using magic alone was extreme fun for me, let alone everything else. Pretty much the same as Chrono Trigger there.

Osu! Tateke! Ouedan! (or whatever the spelling). The whole game is just fun, even when you lose.

Also, I loved Yoshi's Island more than my little brother, and I can alway pick up and play Madness Interactive for the fun of knife throwing.

The entire Rampage series. The new one is just utterly fantastic! ^__^

Oh, and useing Valor Form in KH2. Dual wielding has always amused me.

Baldar's Gate 2, going through as Drizzt on easy mode and slaughtering goblins left and right. Glee!

The Labyrinth and outer wall in Cave Story; with the former being soul-blasting (Level 3 Blade), Gaudi stomping, guns a'blazing fun; and the latter being a moment of discovery, decision, and beauty. Then the rest of the game. I thank those who mentioned it on another thread, and warn everyone else that, unless you download and play this game, your life is incomplete. Like "those kids whose parents leave'em in a closet or strapped to a chair" incomplete. Get it. (http://www.gameflaws.com/cavestory/)

On to games I'm not currently replaying, I lurved the jetpack levels in Pilotwings 64. I even managed a 100% in all the missions. Jetting through that cave at top-speed without hitting anything is a huge rush (or, at least for a video game).

Also, the first time I beat Doomsday Zone in Sonic 3 and Knuckles was great. The music, the challenge (I was about 10), the getting to play as Super Sonic at a time when I believed with all my heart (as opposed to the shriveled remnants of it) he was bad ass and had no knowledge that he was possibly a DBZ parody; good times.

Most of the fighting parts of Tales of Symphonia. Yes, including "random" encounters.

Ship battles in Skies of Arcadia. Choose things and watch them go blastity-kaboom.

Chrono Trigger thirded.

Being praised as the best monk ever in Guild Wars by three different PUGs.

Putting your neighbors into pits in Animal Crossing.

-Voodoo Simon Says from the original Sly Cooper. Just timed button mashing, but somehow fun timed button mashing.

-As Krylo says, all of DMC3.

-Playing as Munchie in Dragon Quest 8. He can't do anything, but he's cute and you can make him flip while he runs. And the music is cute. What?

-Rampage Mode in Dynasty Warriors Extreme 5. A small room filled with stupid soldiers and some generals, and it's your duty to kill as many as you can in ten minutes. Surprisingly fun. The soldiers are often so tightly packed that you can swing your weapon once and take down ten men.

Forgot PC games.

In which case I have to say countless hours on Sim City 2000, Sim Farm, Sim Tower, Yoot Tower, Sim City 3000, Sim Copter, Diablo II, Counter-Strike and various small windows games.

And to go along with what you said, playing Counter-Strike and shooting people in the face with the scout continuously and being kicked for being a 'hacker'.

Just about any Super Mario game really.

Specifically, SM64. That game owns and is fun too.

All of Katamari Damacy and its PS2 sequel.

Chrono Trigger isn't so much fun as it is an experience. One I cherish and love though.

Playing Halo 2 on a friend's Xbox for the first time, and beating him soundly was very fun. And evil.

Metroid Prime for it's bosses (especially the end one, which I felt was the perfect mix of challenge without being a headache) and the ones for the GBA were distilled fun that are one of the few times I actually thought was fun to speed through. (Most of the time, I hate speed runs and like taking my time in games.)

There are others, but those are the highlights.

Super Mario World, where you first work out flying. Also, Super Mario World, where you first get Yoshi to fly.

Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, the video game. Can't remember any particular bit, but God that game was fun.

The bit in We Love Katamari where you finally roll up the planets, meteors, and constellations, and fling them all into the sun.

Oh yeah - in Grand Theft Auto III, the very first time you walk up to a car, pull its driver out of the vehicle, beat him to death, get in the car, and drive at full speed down the sidewalk running down innocent people and police officers as they scream in terror.

Come on, you know you loved it.

Utimate-Spiderman: Sure it was a crummy game (I hate everything about any Ultimate series of Marvel), but taking down the gangs is just mad. Cept when they start getting more and more flamethrowers and rocket launches - then it just gets crazy.

Also, Metal Slug: This game, it's hard to describe what it's like - specially the arcade versions. The cartoony feel, the crazy powerups for your firearms, and the sheer amount of violence. They all come together to form one hell of a game.

And Worms (not number 4): Again, the amount of violence is a key factor - but I love it because it's so comical.

In Chrono Trigger's New Game+, blowing up Imps and Rolypolys with Crono's Luminaire at around, say, Level 79--a guilty pleasure; but they had it coming, they tried to gang up on me, two on one :p .

Also, Gunstar Super Heroes, third stage, moon one--the world you're in rotates through 360 degrees while you hop about and rescue little chick-creatures. It's so much more kickass than it sounds, really; it beggars belief. Not that the whole game isn't entirely jaw-dropping, but this stands out for me.

Most fun moments of totally fun games:

The fight between Sora and Riku when he was possessed by Ansem, it was just so crazy and intense.
In Devil May Cry 3, the battle between Dante, Agni and Rudra. It wasn't too difficult but damn it was fun.
In Chrono Trigger, the moment when King Guardia is being put on trial and it switches between him and you running through the basement. And anything with Frog. I wish that I was still on my first play through of that.
In Metroid Prime, the battle with Meta-Ridley. Mostly because it was the only boss fight in that game that was remotely difficult.

One game I always loved to play was Conker's Bad Fur Day for the N64. Playing the main story was loads of fun, but multiplayer was the best feature in the whole game for me. Incase you don't know, multimplayer is divided into different games. Deathmatch, Tanks, Beach, Heist, etc....

My favorite one however, is the one where you can either play a caveman, or the raptor. Gawd, why can't I remember the name? Anyways, this game is very one-sided. Mainly being the raptor is what makes it easy (depending on the difficulty you set it on. Mainly setting them on inbred makes it fun. Heheh...). The cavemen are food ready to be eaten (again, depending the difficulty). You don't necessarily hafta eat them, however. You can just take them to your nest (while the blood is dripping from your mouth) and feed the baby raptor.

Also, I love to play deathmatch; mainly the temple stage. This is the exact same stage the above cavemen game is taken place. I always choose the shotgun. ALWAYS. The fun part about the gun is that you don't hafta be accurate. You can just be near them and they literally explode and it's just a blood bath. An exaggeration, yes, but funny none-the-less.

Mowing down my opponent's base in an RTS with a gigantic mob of tanks. Just thinking about it is making me nostalgic. Now I want to play the original Command & Conquer again...

Also, I'll second Tales of Symphonia's battle system. No matter who I was fighting or how hard it was, it rocked.

Speaking of Jedi Knight: Academy there was this one level with a thin paths that dropped off into lava. I found that if you ran through fast enough spamming Force Lighting 3 the Jedi waiting on the paths got pushed off by the lighting thus dieing instantly.

I'll also agree with Tales of Symphonia...one part especially.

::SPOILERS AHEAD::

It was when I reached the Tower of Salvation, and fought Remiel.

I was in the zone. It was amazing. I knocked that snotty little angel up and down the screen almost at will, the entire battle just flowed, it was amazingly awesome.

It carried into the Kratos battle for awhile, but not the entire battle...Kratos was apparently mad at me, so he started to spam a magic attack (I can't remember which one) at a pace that made me believe I was not suppose to win that fight...which I didn't.

::END SPOILERS::

Also, Defender on GameCube. There is just something fun about blasting aliens while hauling around tanks and anti-air missile launchers and dropping them into defensive positions.

Oh yes, there was a Rescue Rangers game. It was on the PC and at that point one of the most frustratingly hard things I had ever played. This was in the DOS days, so I hadn't played that many games yet, and was just shy of illiterate, but I knew how to type in the command to make the game run. All I remember of it is this thing involving that cat dropping slime from the top of the screen, and I think I was supposed to get to the top, but I never could. Then I'd get frustrated and play mega-man, and get owned by these dogs because game programers back then liked to ignore the rapidly increasing processing powers of PCs, and after an upgrade to Phil and my computer, games would run anout 300 times too fast and make it so some stupid dog could kill me in half a second by repeatedly ramming into me.

Sorry about that rant, but those two games pissed me off.

Anyway, I think the most fun I have had with a game occured after a night on the town followed by playing Katamari for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing, and had to fight the ball to get it to move anywhere, but I was having an awesome time. Good times... If someone bothers to read this post, and then thinks to themselves "Wow, I didn't have that much trouble figuring out how to get that ball to move," this next sentence is directed at you. I already said why it was hard, just think about it. Of course, no one's gonna read any of this post, so it doesnt matter.

- That card game in Tales of Destiny 2 introduced on the second disk.
- A four character "Purify Weird Soul" on a powerful boss who doesn't die until the last character uses his/her Finishing Strike in Valkyrie Profile.
- Any heavy battles in Halo 2 single player where it's you, the Covenant (regardless of which character you are), and the Flood all mixing it up.
- Every match in Super Smash Brothers Melee that has at least one more PC.
- When I got with my buddies to play Mario Party 5 and they made the greatest jokes about Wario and Waluigi being aggressive pedophiles. The jokes about Mr Bucket were hilarious, too.
- Halflife 2, in Ravenholm. Headhumpers are scary, but immersing oneself in that place is damn fun!
- Survival Mode on Fatal Frame II (XBox).
- The whole Miss Cloud event in Final Fantasy VII, from the moment Cloud and Aeris enter Wall Market to the point they encounter Aps in the sewers.
- In Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64 or XBox), the Undead and Matrix themed stages. Note: In the XBox game, Conker dresses up as Van Helsing when he enters the Undead themed area.
- The final boss fight (all parts of it) on Final Fantasy VIII.
- Dancing to "It's Raining Men" on DDR.

...Yes, I was just joking about the last one. No, seriously!

Number one spot has to go to multiplayer on GoldenEye64. Specifically, getting the remote mines to float, and setting intricate series of traps and rooms of death. That game defined "multiplayer" for me for the longest time. Many fond memories.

Playing "Spider-Man Mode" in Agent Under Fire was pretty fun too. (Accomplished by setting gravity low, turning on the grapple, and going to any outdoors location.) Also that whenever I got the shotgun, everyone else was screwed; that's like the only "next-gen" (after N64 at least) game I can own in.

The night I played Return of the King all the way through on co-op was also pretty sweet.

Ha. Return of the King was awesome, until you actually managed to unlock all the secret characters only to find out that 3 out of 4 of them SUCKED. *Stupid, fat hobbitses!! I did like using the invincibility cheat and playing Multiplayer mode in Gondor, where you're supposed to save three hundred Gondorians before time runs out. Because then, you and your friend can stand right in front of the door and block the flow of Gondorians while attracting the attention of the orcs. We liked to see how many Gondorians we could get killed before they found a way around us. Oh, and ganging up on Smeagol/Gollum rocked, too.

You know these "holy fuck they played that?" moments? Yeah. That happens every five goddamn seconds over at The Gamer's Quarter (http://www.gamersquarter.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=4).

For this thread: I offer, the PC FPS Enemy Territory. Yes, the whole fucking game. No, I'll specify--oasis. First playing that level and slowlying learning its complexities was a shocker, and it still being fun today is, too. So much depth, so many strategies, so much skill...*swoons*

The final dungeon in Final Fantasy 6. I guess because it's the culmination of all of your abilities.

Monkey Island 2, the first town. Seeing the world of MI transform like that into these lush sprites was so refreshing, especailly since the game also rocked. Oh, what a sad thing that Tim Schafer never got to direct 3 (although I love 3, I just wonder...it would have most certainly be different).

The very first time Half-Life 1 something breaks and shoots out of the wall, and you realise...shit. this is ground fuckin' zero. Not to mention when you get to the surface and lull yourself into a false sense of security for about .4 seconds, until you realise you're still fucked up here.

Someone mentioned Metroid Prime earlier, but they didn't mention the opening. FOR SHAME! That has to be one of the coolest parts of any game I've played. It's just so... cool, for some reason.

But, speaking of Metroid Prime, going through the first one as a newbie to the game is just amazing. Everything's so alive, even if it's all dead, a space pirate or infected with Phazon.

Also, I have to say DMC3 as well. There just isn't really anything more to say than just "Play the damn thing!"

Caertain moments in Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) also deserve a shout out. Especially the Vigoorian Emperor fight. So different from anything before that point in the game...

For my last suggestion, I'll say the time when you finally get free reign over your powers in Viewtiful Joe. It's just fun beating the crap out of things in slow-mo, is all...

I would have to say the first 30 minutes that I played of Warrior Within being my PoP game and all.. I was just saying "Oh shit! Did he just fucking run across the wall and slide down a fucking wall carpet?! (or whatever they're called..)"

Also, the parts of Battlefront 2 where I was a Jedi.. so amazing.. especially the force push and force choke.

When I first played GRAW on the 360 was unbelievable. There are so many little cool tricks in that game like jumping for cover, rolling sideways while prone, using the camera gun.

Basically, any Worms PC game also rocks. Especially Armagedon and using the bannana bombs..

Allignment modifier all the way to the right? Well, sacrifice a single mercenary at the Chapel of Skorm at midnight one night will get you Skorm's Bow, easily. Then I wonder into my hometown and start slaughtering guards so I can get the Sentinus Greatmace for the cheapest price ever. And this allows me to max out both the light and dark spells (at significant allignment discounts, of course).

Besides, I could only max out my character completely by playing both fields. I'd have a perfect character if not for the fact that he won't pick up the Frying Pan now. I guess he's just too powerful to regard it with interest.

Using aimed shots in Fallout 2 was most fun. Kicking male critters in the groin causes them to fall down unconscious, hitting their arms makes them drop their weapons, shooting their legs lowers their action points, and a hit to the eyes makes them blind (-1 Perception) and has the highest critical chance. I usually aimed for the groin and eyes. Haha.

Oh, and Duke Nukem 3D was a whole crapload of fun. So was Shadow Warrior. Whenever you killed someone, there would be a chance that the main character spouted off a one-liner. Also, you could kill aliens in DN3D by letting them get into the doorway, then activating the door on them which causes the door to squish them and leave sticky entrails. And there were so many ways you could implement traps: in DN3D you could place a tripwire mine in a teleporter; in SW you could lay sticky mines just in front of a door as you exited the room. So much fun.
We need more opportunities for traps in FPS games.

And I also agree that Perfect Dark = FUN. Period.

Fishing is also great...even my dad plays this game, only for the fishing partXD.
And, finally, riding Epona in a bunch of Cukoos in Lon Lon Ranch and making them follow you everywhere you go.

Super smash bros: so many good times playing with my sister, pausing the game every two seconds just to get a shot of me hitting her in a great combo attack(vice versa) or laughing our heads off because we did a coincedental attack combo on the same enemy, sending him flying off the board.

MarioKart 64 with my sister on VS mode and grand prix. Good times.

There might be more, but I can't think of any at the moment...
