This thread was inspired in Krylo's post (to which is quoted down, below and under me) on another Thread... i just thought abotu and its quite amusing how brands, testes, tastes and commercials make us shake and turn... and in one way, i can say that Cold drinks and sodas are like the internet "It just wont go away ever"!
So here is Krylo's post, which im quoting because it is just a nifty cool piece of fact, and a nice start to this thread.
Discuss away!
Actually, if you robbed the world of Coke for awhile, people would just lose interest in it.
Allow me to regale you with a tale of habit and New Coke.
You see, once upon a time a soda was created. This soda was called Coke, and it was good--and also the only soda of its type. As a result people the country over drank it, and it became a cultural icon, much like The Beatles, except it didn't rock quite as hard.
But one day along came another company which made a product similiar to, yet distinct from, Coke. This company was Pepsi-co.
Pepsi-co knew that they couldn't defeat a cultural icon with a subpar product, and so they made their product far superior.
So superior, in fact, that seven out of ten people* prefered Pepsi in a blind taste test. It's unsure how many people were apathetic.
Coke then did its own testing, which only confirmed their fears. Pepsi did, indeed, taste better.
So, what did Coke do? It changed its recipe and did another blind taste test, with four versions of Coke and a Pepsi. Only one version beat Pepsi.
Thus was New Coke born.
However, Coke quickly discovered that the flavor of its drink was inconsequential. After so many years of being a cultural icon for us, it had become so ingrained into the minds of the people, that they would choose any drink that bore the Coke label over anything that didn't for the most part, in taste tests or otherwise.
And thus did Coke change their recipe back, though they would never be the same.
For today Pepsi outsells Coke wherever they are sold side by side, though Coke still remains on top tenuously, purely by being sold exclusively in many restaurants.
Now you know the true tale of Coke, Pepsi, and New Coke.

Pepsi - the soda that tastes like Diet, even though it's not.
Also Coke would be better if they'd make it with real sugar instead of goddamn corn syrup.
Also for personal beverage preference I'd take Bubble Tea any day, or possibly one of those green tea Frappuchinos.

Soda: Dr Pepper (NO FUGGING DOT AFTER DR!)
Juice: Sobe Dragon. Or Snapple Fire. Just about anything with dragonfruit in it really.
Water: Because we can't live without it.

I have a different theory about the whole "new Coke" deal. Let's look at the scenario. Coke, the only majorly successful soda brand up until that time, hadn't recently made any changes to their product because with no competetion, it's just not neccesary. Then Pepsi comes in with a new taste, and many grab hold of the new stuff. People started drinking Pepsi more than Coke, if for no other reason than that everyone had become, let's say "immune", to the uniqueness of Coke. It was obvious that Coke needed to do something in order to keep it's place in the industry. The obvious choice seems to make a newer, better tasting soda.
But why do that when it's so much easier to do the opposite?
"New Coke" hits; purposefully worse than before. People say, "Hey it's Coke, maybe this could be better than Pepsi." Instead, everyone trys it, hates it, then bam, you've got a demand for "Old Coke" again. Just threatening to take a child's toy away will get a response. "New Coke" was just that on a much larger scale. Those who enjoyed "Old Coke", even those who switched over to Pepsi, suddenly became interested in the product they were just recently bored of. Many people thought that Coke was messing with "thier" soda, well I say that the opposite is true.
And the guy in charge of the "New Coke" project that enraged so many people? Last I heard, he was promoted.

Good theory, Bear. Unfortunately, history disagrees with it.
I mean, I GUESS it could be a huge corporate cover-up, but I imagine someone would have squeeled by now.
Myself, I never tried New Coke, so I can't really speak on whether it was actually better.

Diet coke was too sweet... then they made New Diet Coke, which tasted better (a lot) and thats selling now!

I hate Pepsi. Goddamit, I hate fucking Pepsi! It's just too sweet for my tastes. Maybe it is because everyone in my family drinks Coke, which leads me to believe that the actual fondness for one of the two brands is culturally engrained in each one of us.
Of course, horchata water pwns them all!

Root Beeeeeeer! ROOOOT BEEEEER!
Owns any drink. I would choose a bad root beer over a good coke (ok, it's what I call soft drinks. Get used to it). Mug, Barques, A&W... all great root beers. Mmm....
Can you imagine the horror I felt when I found out a friend of mine had never had root beer before? THE HORROR!

Althane, I'll agree except one thing.
Frosties. Frosties root beer tastes like ass.
Otherwise, you're fully right about even bad root beer > other soda.

When it comes to sodas, all I need is Dr Pepper, RC Cola, Sunkist Orange, A&W Root Beer and Sierra Mist, and I'm fine.
Other favorite drinks of mine include milk, lemonade, cherry Kool-Aid, cran grape, and Tampico orange juice. You can never go wrong with Tampico brand orange juice: two percent actual fruit juice, ninety eight percent sugar and artificial sweeteners (just an estimate. Don't know the actual contents, but man, it's the good stuff!)

i like pretty much any type of pop. Coke is first among equals, with Dr. Pepper falling close behind. Cherry Coke and Pepsi are awsome if i have a styrofoam cup to drink out of (wierd i know, but the flavoring changes alot base on what you drink out of). then its Siera Mist, any type of root beer and Squirt for non-caffinated pop.
for non-pop beverages, its Arizona iced teas all the way. Raspberry, lemon and green teas are super tasty, and are usualy cheaper for a larger can than a coke.
as far as alchohal goes, its Guiness, Jameson whiskey, or Jack Daniels and Coke.

Cherry Coke for me, all the way. I drink the stuff almost constantly. You just can't beat the taste of shady corporate enterprise...
Pepsi, I really have never been able to stand. It tastes to sweet, and flat and... pissy for my tastes.
Water: HATE it. Serious, I hate water, I can't even put it in my mouth -_-.

I'm a Pepsi person, myself. I kinda like the sweet flavor. Coke is okay, but it almost tastes bitter sometimes.
I'm getting into fruit juice/ tea beverages. Tazo Giant Peach Juiced Tea is really very refreshing. It's sweet and tangy, and has that fresh green tea flavor in the background; not overpowering, just noticable enough to compliment the fruit juice.
Pom Wonderful's got a new line of pomegranate juice/ tea mixtures out, and they're pretty good too. Plus, PomTea comes in a spiffy glass tumbler you can keep as a regular beverage glass afterwards. You can say you recycled, and you didn't have to make any big effort to actually do so. Works for me.

Root Beer: Barq's or 1919 are both good.
Cola: Usually only drink it at restaurants when the selection is crap. Sometimes I get Sprite or Mt. Dew as well.
Diet Soda: Coke Zero and Pepsi One are both decent, also diet Barq's and Diet A&W Cream Soda are pretty good diet sodas.
Other soda: Cream soda (most varieties I've tried are pretty good), Orange flavored Mt. Dew, Vault (the new Surge)
Juice, etc: Sobe Elixir is really good (cranberry/grapefruit). Other standard juices are alright (grape, apple) but I don't usually buy them unless they're on sale. Frozen Minute Maid Pink Lemonade is a common choice, you get more lemonade out of one can than most frozen juices and it's usually pretty cheap. Chocolate milk I am a sucker for, I'll drink half a carton in one chug if I'm really craving it. At work, I just bring an empty 20 oz. bottle and fill it with the water from the water cooler (Culligan or Glenwood Inglewood, I forget which). I usually drink about 3-4 bottles of water at work per day, so I don't feel too bad about drinking soda at home.

Drinks? Who's buying?
Water's good, especially CLEAN water. I'm not the type who likes to drink his entire daily dose of radiation and minerals in one gulp.
Carbonated drinks? I like Pepsi. Much more than Coca-Cola. Especially since Coke dropped their Coke w/ Lime... which was actually the first Coke product I've liked more than it's Pepsi equivalent. But they dropped it in favor of bringing out vanilla-blech-cherry-coke and Vault, their re-named Spooge. Both of which taste like ass. Vault tastes worse than Surge... not because the recipe is different (it's not), but because I was stupid enough to hope Coke would learn from their mistakes and not sell green-colored carbonated Syrup of Ipecac under a new name.
...What? It makes me wanna hurl.
For juice, I have always had a strange affection for the original V-8. It just tastes good to me. And although I am fond of beer, I have never understood the strange fascination with "red beer," that is, to mix V8 and beer... it's a waste of two otherwise palatable beverages.
Alcohol? I like some beers (Alaskan Amber, Alaskan Winter Ale, Alaskan Summer Ale, Alaskan Oktoberfest, Guinness, Kokanee, and Corona), but I'll take a Long Island Iced Tea over beer every day of the week. Liquid Cocaines also pack a nice punch, but are a little too sweet... I recommend drinking those only after a few Iced Teas....
And Sake. Can't forget Sake. I want to try the type that they keep in Japan... the red sake that they dissolve a live asp into. Sounds like it would be interesting.

Moutain Dew: Code Red owns my soul. I love cherry drinks and Code red easily surpasses others. If not, I'll gladly settle for Barq's. (The only TRUE rootbear you heathens.)
Coke is better if only for one thing. Mixed drinks.
Specifically, Bacardi+Coke or Southern Comfort+Coke.
And rounding out things, I love orange and grape juice, but only feel compelled to buy orange. And very little or preferably no pulp please.
Yar, I do be finnicky indeed!

Not been much of a soda person lately... of the 'colas', my personal favorite is Vanilla Coke. If possible, out of a glass bottle.
I usually drink lots of water (Mmmmm) and try to start, end, or otherwise place into my day, a protein shake or two. Occansionally I'll have a double-size Rockstar energy drink, even though I really dont know what the stuff in it does to you, and if I'm working, I drink lots and lots.. and lots, of coffee. Heavy cream, little sugar, or sometimes just cold and black. Coffee. Yummers.
But always water. I'm drinking some right now. See? Water.

I wish they didn't drop drinks....I'm pretty sure their dropping Black Cherry Vanilla Coke CmP as whenever I go into a store now, theres only like 9 of the 12 packs of it left. They no longer sell it in bottles. They also dropped plain Vanilla Coke.
I'm gonna have to go the store sometime this week and clean them out of Black Cherry Vanilla coke. GOD ITS GOOD!
Pepsi, its OK, a decent alternative to coke, but MY GOD! what the hell is wrong with Pepsi if thier diet pepsi's sink and the regular pepsi floats in water? Or was it the other way around? Forgot but just yesterday I saw one sinking and the other floating in water.

The only Mountain Dew worth drinking ever was the second incarnation of Pitch Black. Tasted like carbonated kool-aid, it did. Diet Mountain Dew used to be rather good, but then they went and fucked up the taste, and thus it sucked. A message to soda companies: If the taste ain't broken, and has been selling for YEARS, don't fucking change it.
Most Pepsi products, for some unknown reason, cause me to have something that feels like heartburn. Pitch Black didn't, for the most part.
Anyway, for the sodas I actually drink, I tend to drink a regional soda called Ski (highly caffinated lemon and orange goodness, not overly sweet like the syrup called Mountain Dew), and most other citrusy sodas.... 7Up, Squirt, occasionally Sprite, though Sierra Mist falls into the Pepsi Products cause me pain clause. I tend to steer away from sweeter tasting sodas, though I'll give into the 3 variants of Dr Pepper and thier diet counterparts.
For other beveraes, nothing really beats a glass of iced peppermint tea on a hot day. I also enjoy koolaid very muchly so, and various citrus fruit juices (go Five Alive!).
Cherry Limeade is the nectar of the gods.
Water is a close second to Cherry Limeade.

My personal number one drink:Milk...man, it's so damn good...I could drink almost two liters of milk a day, but I try to control myself...
I'd say water has to come in second...It's just essential for our bodies, and I like drinking it while I'm studying, which means almost all the time.
Juice: Tropicana orange juice with NO pulp and Minute Maid apple juice. And sometimes, when I really have a huge juice craving, I go to the ''healthy'' shop and go buy myself some pure mango juice...so thick, sooooo good!!!
Soft drinks: Pepsi and Coke. Yes, I like both because they both taste good, but if Pepsi is available, I'm taking Pepsi. Anything that's diet or seven up, or sprite, or whatever ''white drink'' you can think of: no. I like to drink Ginger Ale once in a while, but not too much; it's got this weird after taste. Root beer:I just think it tastes like tooth paste.
As for alcohol, it's either a Labatt Blue, Budweiser, Alexander Keith's, Corona or Heiniken(sp?). And if beer isn't available, I go for a Vodka and cranberry juice mix.
