Everyone's so caught up in this OMG66six!!! thing that no one's remembering D-day. I say we all take a moment of silence out of our day for the brave souls lost that day defending freedom. I have friends who saluted at midnight, they made me realize how ignorant the media's being today. Instead of worrying about the end of the world, how's about we salute our heroes that saved it.

Good call. Many lives were lost -- soldiers fighting on both sides -- in one of the most pivotal points of the Second World War. I'll stand with you in remembering their efforts.

Also, it's not 666 -- it's 6/6/2006. Stupid movie re-releases aside, making anything special out of this particular date is just silly; though I suppose, as it happens only once every hundred years, it's slightly neat.

This whole 6/6/06 thing is starting to piss me off.

"The Omen" is playing in theatres.

The Scorpions are playing nearby.

I have people who I've heard are worried.

Numbers don't mean jack shit when it corresponds to "ZOMG EVIL!!!11!eight!1", especially since time is something humans created for convenience.

It is neat, but I'm getting really sick of it all.

I don't know the origin behind associating 666 with Satan or the end of the world or whatever. That's all bunk in my opinion. The only thing I'll consider today is paying my respects to the lost souls in Normandy.
I think people are going to do this kind of thing again in 2012.

To be perfectly honest, todays date cannot be associated with the Devil/Anti Christ/Satan/whatever.

6/6/06

look at the last number. Obviously it is short for 2006. If anything, if Christianity was around at the start of the last millenium, people would be worried because it would have been 6/6/6. Note the lack of 0.

This whole thing is preposterous.

Book of Revelations 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.

Come on! Obviously this is more numerologically signifigant than all the other end-of-world dates that have been around!

I find the course this thread has taken very ironic and somewhat amusing. :brow:

Bob has the right idea, though. Spare a thought during a quite moment for the men who fought and died this day 62 years ago.

To be honest, I am more interested in the Maya's Apocalypse Date

21/12/2021

But of course being the person I am, I continue to try and find the relevance of this date.

Yeah, that'll be a good day, what kind of scary movie do you think Hollywood will push out for that date. XD

Word has it there's a website up taking bets on whether the world will end today. I wish I'd heard about it sooner so I could bet all my money on it not ending, just so I could double my life's savings. I mean, how would I lose something like that?

Hey, if you lost, you wouldn't lose anything. Well, except your life, all your money, friends, family, and everything you've ever cared about, but, hey! At least you have your money!
Wait...
Edit: Oh no! The world will end in 2 hours 30 minutes! To the bunker!
*runs down stairs, door slams*
*Mom walks down stairs*
"Petey, why are you in the pantry?"
"THE APOCALYPSE IS NIGH!"

Hmm...we've 2 hours before the day ends, and you can go laugh at all your satanist friends. Unless of course, you're in another timezone and haven't/therefore/possibly have already gone through 6/6/06.

...So does this mean that on some other side of the earth, The world has ended?

But of course being the person I am, I continue to try and find the relevance of this date.First of all, for clarification, it is in the year 2012 (all those 2's and 1's can be confusing).

Now, to answer your question, wikipedia has an answer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Calendar#End_of_the_world.3F). Simply put, December 21st, 2012 marks the end of a sort of year. Not that it also coincides with the winter solstice (I think).

The Mayans had freaky good knowledge of Astronomy.

But, back on subject, yeah, it is a shame that the historical significance of today was overridden by crackpot theories and assinine behavior.

Look I have to be honest, I'm a little disappointed.

I mean economic collapses, nuclear exchanges, suicide cultists, something.

But nope, just another damn day.

I mean it was sunny out, with, like, puffy, cheerful-lookin' little clouds, 'n shit.

Disappointed.

Mike McC

Well, suicide cults could still be found. They might not be found until the neighbors start complaining of the stench.

I like how BTM starts a thread about how silly nonsense has taken attention away from an august and important occasion, and the thread immediately recenters on silly nonsense, to the exclusion of the aforementioned august occasion.

Although to be honest, it's not like there's much you can say about D-Day that hasn't been said already. I'm inclined give the media a mulligan for this one, really.

Yes, but even a tasteful little blurb in the paper, or a sentence on one of those tickers on the news channels. Not the "ZOMGS THE END IS NIGH" crap.

I'd have preferred Hell, Grand Cayman. They've got turtle farms and EVERYTHING!

Mike McC

It's not stupid, it's them cashing in on the fun side of the day. Hell, Michigan got in on the fun too, even printed up limited edition souviners that proclamed "I partied in Hell on 6-6-6" (limited to 666 each item). Hell, it's what I would have done.
