View Full Version : The NPF Member Comic Webpage

Hey all. Right now, I'm undertaking a rather ambitious project. I'm in the process of setting up a webpage for all of the NPF comics, which will be divided up by author/storyline. And, well, right now, I need a little help.
I already found a very nice script that I can use to manage the comics, one that is able to manage multiple series, so I can keep all the different ones seperate. But I'll need a little help in other areas:
1) A webpage design/layout will need to be made. I am not the best at making my own design from scratch, seeing as how the only one's I've made have been ultra-minimalistic. If anyone wants to help here, that'd be great. If multiple people come up with design mock-ups, we (the forum community) should vote for the best.
2) I'll need some help with the coding. I can handle all the server-specific paths, but my knowledge of webpage programming does not exceed far beyond basic html. I could do it myself if noone else can, but, it'd take forever. The script driving the webpage, Comikaze (http://www.comikaze.org/), is php based, but i can hook you up with the neccesary variable lists, and some example files. This'll have to wait until after a layout is decided upon.
Also, if you do not want your comics to show up on this page, please, tell me so. Right now, I'm running on the assumption of "If they're on the forum, they're good to go on the page."
One final note, this is going to end up on CheshireThief's webspace, so I hope none of you have a problem with the domain Spatchcock.net (http://www.spatchcock.net/[/url), as that's the one that's on the webspace (feel free to blame CT for all of that).
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I've got Dreamweaver as well as Frontpage and there are some nice webpage templates to be had there. I'll take a look later on that. Plus I already have access to the webspace so that's a plus.

Sorry for the nit-picking, but is this really an "off topic" topic?
Anyway, I'd like to help, but my html/javascript/design skills don't extend far from the basics either. What I really do well is debugging. Granted, I can't debug stuff I don't know about, but as far as silly little mistakes go, I've made enough to know generally how to find them. So if during the course of things someone has something that just doesn't work, feel free to shoot a copy over my way and I'll tinker around with it. Just be sure to comment the major parts so I know what's what (given that this seems like it's going to be a shared project, we probably should be doing that anyway).
Anything I do will be in notepad or wordpad, since I don't have any software like Dreamweaver and I think I work better without it anyway.
If all else fails, I'm excellent at giving moral support and being consistent (not always a good thing, but I enjoy my quirks).

I put this in off-topic because this was where the member-comics are, and most likely to be noticed by the proper people here.
DarkCorn, sorry, but 50 Megs really isn't going to cut it for something like this (I assume that's where you'd put it), as I believe the total bulk of all the comics exceeds 50 Megs. I have access to a couple of professional paid webspaces that are better suited for this kind of project.
TheBear: I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.

I'd been planning to do something like this for months, but I never got to more than the "vague idea" stage. Thanks for undertaking what my lazy ass apparently can't. =P I'll be glad to help with anything to the best of my abilities.

I too have been playing around with this idea for a few months, but it all came together when I heard the new system with the comic threads here.
And, I think I can actually set it up so that everyone can actually access thier own comic's archive on the webpage, so they could upload new comics themselves, add in commentary on the news for that specific comic, all that fun stuff. I'm playing around the script a bit right now, it looks promising.

Oh could I trouble someone to photoshop up a banner. I'm afraid I'm not creatively artistic enough to make a suitable banner.

I'm thinking I could come up with a practical layout, though not the artistic stuff and coding to go with it.
I say series each get their own section (JAQ, Finding Meister, et cetera), sprite sheets get a section, and individual comics are lumped into a section in chronological order. Depending on how things are done on the forums proper, we may or may not want comment logs. It'd probably be less work to leave comments to the proper thread in Off Topic.
It might also be nice to have character sections, similar to Flarecobra's "What are you?" thread, but nice and pretty.
Question -- who gets to upload these? And if I go back and remaster my comics, how would I replace the obsolete versions?

[...] Question -- who gets to upload these?I'm in the process of archiving the comics for Fencer. I'm a little more than half-way done at the moment. The way I'm organizing it is like this: everyone who's ever made a comic gets a folder, and their comics go into that folder in chronological order. If they've done seperate series (such as AB) those series go in sub-folders under their main folder. Any series that has more than one contributor (such as the Multiplayer Saga or the Nilk comics) gets its own folder. All files have been re-named for easy orgainization (such as L2NES001 or SAAM062).

I also have a comic you can archive in this, although it's currently on a hiatus (again...) until I can think of some new material.
Still, feel free to add it to this NPF comics project thing.

Here a simple version of what the site could look like. (http://www.sithdarth.spatchcock.net/ComicArchive/) I still need a few things like a banner and I might edit the color scheme a litte.

I'll be honest and say I'm not enthusiastic about the color scheme. Maybe teal or turquoise? And the font could also use spicing up. Arial's been done, man.
Still, I get it's a preliminary version and I can't really ask too much at this point. The layout itself looks good and that's the point. The way I'm organizing it is like this...Groovy.

That's a stripped down basic template with default selections. Just about everything is up for change really. Except maybe the overall layout wich is what I was going for at the moment. It only took about 3 minutes to get the format I wanted. I just wanted to make sure it'd be ok before I started making color choices and stuff.

06-11-2006, 02:02 PM
DarkCORN, I'd appreciate it if you took the part of your sig that suggests we'll host comics on this webpage out, because I don't really want to deal with having to tell people that no, I won't host them, I'm only hosting the self-referential community-centric psuedo-autobiographical comics of the Nuklear Power community.
And really, we don't need to know every time you've updated your comic either. Just let us get the page set up first, then I'll hammer out the following details. Rick is only doing the archive because he already had a pretty comprehensive archive on his computer as it was.
Meister

I trust we'll be able to have a comment section or make liner notes or something.
Mike McC
06-11-2006, 02:41 PM
Meister, the script I found seems to be using a modified version of the script that drives Nuklear Power. So, it does archive the news on the same page as the comics, so the creator can make whatever notes they feel like on the comics inside the news items that are linked to that comic.

h4x.m4g3's first few comics
SAAM's "QQ in the outback # 3"
MC43's comic from post 230
Elmin's comic from post 232
AB's "Cover Those Slits # 1"
"Mammothtank vs SAAM"
Newb's third comic from post 319
Druid's AB Poster from post 337
Whatever Dante put in posts 338, 342, and 346
Wandering Actor's post in 347
Meister's two comics from post 361
RMB's comic from post 425
Flare's post from 480
Mauve's pirate vs ninja comic from 501If anyone has any of these, please send them to me so they can be included in the archive!

No, this wasn't going to be a replacement of the Member Comic thread, more like an organizational tool, making it easier to read through any specific 'arc' of comics, or one user's in particular.

Yes
Speaking of witch I'm going to need a list of everyone with a series that they are still adding comics too. That list must include their names and the names of each series. I have to individually set up a seperate page for each series as well as create a username for each person. It all has to be done manually too so it'll take awhile.
Also, whenever someone starts a new comic series they'll have to PM me so that I can manually set up a new page for the new series.

I take it this list is for you to set up a username for each person? Cause you know there will probably be a few people who don't see this...
Would it be easier just to create pages for each series using the name of the folder it was uploaded under?
Just so everyone knows what's up there, here's a breakdown of the folders and subfolders, along with how many comics are in each: EDIT: Now color-coded. GREEN means they still update now and then. BLUE means it's been a while, but they very well might be back. RED means they probably won't be.

The problem with just letting people upload willy nilly is that then anyone can go in and mess with anyone elses comics. That's a can of worms I just don't want to open. I can however set it up so that more than one person has access to a series so that comics with more than one author can have input from all authors.
At the very least I'd like a list of every author and what comics they should have access to. I'd make the list myself but I'm just a little busy.

Well, that list I just put up should cover that. Any folder with a tilde in front of it should be accessable by the person whose name precedes it. And since most people don't have actual series, I'd just assume it'd be a general "X Member's Comics" for the name.
As for series with multiple authors, here's the rundown:
Dynamite's Quest -- mammothtank and Dynamite220
Euro Sign -- Osterbaum and Meister
Finding Meister -- Mauve Mage (with Skyshot, Great Cartoonist, Loyal2NES, and patrat, though she may wish for sole control since it's technically her series)
Mauve Magic -- phil_ and Mauve Mage
Nerd Wars -- QueenQeeko, CHICAGO¤Lollie, and shiney
Nilk -- SAAM, QueenQeeko, Chryos the Forsaken, CHICAGO¤Lollie, Dragonsbane, Meister
Pirates vs Ninja - Vengence -- Major Blood and mammothtank
The Adventures of Technobum -- Fenris Wolf (with Skyshot)
The Multi-Player Saga -- Meister, Patrat, Loyal2NES, Mauve Mage, Newb, VA Ninja, RedMageBlack, shiney, Skyshot, and Great Cartoonist
Major Blood

Major Blood (18)
~Adventures in Canadaland (1) (is this going to be an ongoing series, or should it be MB019?)
Yeah, it'll be a series. I just completely forgot about it.
Also, i noticed that DarkCORN! is on that list. Would his comics stay on even though he's banned?

My part of the Nilk thing wasn't so much "part of a series" as it was "a two-comic cameo".

Also, i noticed that DarkCORN! is on that list. Would his comics stay on even though he's banned?*shrug* Well, at the time when I was archiving everything, he was still around. As this is a comprehensive archive, I didn't discriminate against anything. Every comic is there. My part of the Nilk thing wasn't so much "part of a series" as it was "a two-comic cameo".I just grouped all the comics that had to do with Nilk into one folder, for reference purposes.

Huh. I was planning on putting it on spatchcock.net's main page.

I already had it mostly set up and I didn't feel like setting up again so I left it where it was. Its not like I was really doing anything with that.

Here's another question: would it be too much trouble to replace those buttons? They kinda clash with the background. Maybe something more like this?
http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/9210/button2my8.pnghttp://img175.imageshack.us/img175/8743/buttonam5.png
I mean, not those specifically--I just threw those together in photoshop real quick. But ya know what I mean? Oh, and maybe have the buttons both before and after the comic?
Also: title fonts (ie, the one's that say "News" and "Comic Series List"). What font is it using right now, and do we have other options? It's not horrible, but I was wondering if we couldn't do better. I kinda prefer the font you have for the links section. Oh, and the font color should definately be a brighter color. It's hard to read right now.
Speaking of the links section, I have a suggestion: there should definately be a link on the front page back to NPF and/or Nuklear Power proper.
Just some thoughts.

Changes have been made. (http://sithdarth.spatchcock.net/index.php) Also, anyone happen to have a list of those comic people that have either gone inactive or been banned handy. It'd help a lot as I then I won't have to make usernames for those people. Although if they come back I can still set one up.

Changes have been made. (http://sithdarth.spatchcock.net/index.php)Cool! Though, if I had known you were gonna use those, I'd have spent more time on 'em. But if it's that easy to replace them...Also, anyone happen to have a list of those comic people that have either gone inactive or been banned handy. It'd help a lot as I then I won't have to make usernames for those people. Although if they come back I can still set one up.How 'bout this? I'll go back and color code the master list on the 7th page accordingly. That way, no new list needs to be compiled. EDIT: Done. See my sig for a quick link. I didn't bother coloring the series, because they either belong to the person above them, or have multiple authors. (Assuming that you'd just hand a single login for such a series to every pertinent author.)
Red means they probably won't be involved with it at all. Green and blue are a bit of a grey area (heh). Really, it's just those people who I know are still comicing and will want influence on over their pages. If anyone wants a status change, tell me and I'll hook you up ASAP.

Oh and I got two more people completely uploaded but they both had three or less things so its not like it was hard.

Okay, the list has been updated with a few people changing colors, and with numbers updated to take into account recent comics.
Also, since Major Blood and FenrisWolf just did some sequential comics, that meant a new folder for said "seires". I named it "Fenris's Birthday".

Sith? What's with the new login thing at the front of the webpage?
EDIT: It seems that there is no spatchcock.net anymore.

The domain has apparently been suspended. I need to get ahold of CT to find out what's going on there, however, I have a backup plan. I just want to figure out the exact details of the suspension first.
Edit: Okay, the problem has been figured out, and hopefully solved. Website should be back in the next couple of days.
