View Full Version : Adding/ Subtracting Sections

I was thinking that maybe the Mods and admins might want to consider a little reorganization of the forum sections.

It might help to clear up 'General' if we added a 'Film' or 'Movie's' or even 'Film's & Plays' section - We have done this for Books, Animation, and Video Games. Why not for film and theatre? Although this appears to clog up the Main section, with a multitude of sub-sections, I see it more like adding another lane on the highway - it just clears the traffic up a bit... makes it easier to find what you're looking for.

Additionally, to address the issue of too many main page sections, we could combine 'Animation' into 'film & theatre' if it was incorporated. I think most of us recognize that animation is a legitimate form of film-making equal to that of live-action footage... Also the fact that animation is so much a part of modern film making (CG, cell-shading, etc) means there does not need to be a distinction persay. This is much like how we have Books AND comics as a part of the same sub-section. Any disscussion of the paticulars and technical details of an animated or CG film would wind up in arts & crafts, I suppose.

Ideally, for me, the main page would look like this.

Rules
8BT + Nuklear Age (AKA 'Clevinger Central'? )
General
Off-Topic
Disscussion
Video Games
Arts & Crafts
Books & Comics
Film & Theatre
Forum Games
Forum Related
Dead Topic
Tell-The-Admin

Maybe this is something that has been considered? I would even think about combineing Forum-related and Tell the admin as well...

Anyway, just my feelings on this. I currently have an over-stock of opinions at the moment, so I'm practically giving them away...

It's a steal! Get 'em before they're gone!

We already seperated 8BT and Nuklear Age because it's too annoying to pore through many topics for each subject in the same forum.

As far as a film category, we'll see what Brian thinks.

The reason forum related and tell the admin are seperate is because tell the admin relates to stuff that we (normal forum admin staff) can't fix and will be left up to Fuitad to do. Nobody can post new threads to TTA so only stuff that is thought needs his attention (database errors for example) is moved to that forum.

If we do go with this new section, you might want to put television shows in there as well. All the tv show threads wind up in General.

Maybe 'Theatre & Television' would be a more appropriate name?

Once you give tv and movies their own forum you may as well carve out one for music and at that point I suspect General's just gonna die of neglect. Not to mention the others are gonna be pretty anemic on their own (hell, it's not like you couldn't fold B&C into General and have too many people notice).

Maybe we don't need general in that case? I don't know. It just seems like people (and by people I mean me) would be more interested in participating/starting threads if things were more defined, yet also compacted somehow?

I mean, we don't want a section just called 'Entertainment' or anything...

How about a forum for works of fiction? That could fill up fast enough without being too broad to be meaningful. Books, comics, films, theater, and animation might all go well together.

With your powers combined...I am...the Fiction Forum!

Essentially, I think seperating 'forms of entertainment' from general is what I am lobbying for here. General seem like a good catch all for news, advice, culture, information, computer facts/help...

But it just feels like it would be useful to have all or most 'entertainment' topics seperated from general... We all have so much to say on these topics (video games, music, movies, etc) that it seems like the forum could benefit from an atmosphere where we felt like there was a place that, we not only could post such things (general) but where we are supposed to.

I realize we have this for a lot of things (video games, books, etc) but it might help if we just carried that idea further, even if it meant combineing other categories... Just so that the combinations corrosponded, even loosely.

To be perfectly honest, after a considerable amount of thought I don't find a pressing need. There aren't so many movie or tv shows that they clutter up the General forum. Its purpose is to be the "talk about anything" forum only, without going off topic or being silly.

The reason we spliced off arts & crafts, animation, books & comics was we would sometimes have dozens of new threads per week. Comparitively, we get maybe 5 or so for tv / movies. I'm going to keep things as they are for now, and if I see an uprising in movie or tv threads I'll reconsider it.

Another thing is, a lot of this is probably pretty cyclical. Of course there's a shit-ton of tv threads now, cause we're just off the new seasons starting. Maybe a bunch of movie threads around summer, cause that's when all the big movies come out. Past that, the forum's gonna have a lot of time laying fallow.

And if you want to talk about separate forums as a way of spurring conversation, I mean, look at Books and Comics. You get a couple, maybe three or four new threads a week in there, tops.

You're not gonna twist anybody's arm into talking about things if they're not inclined to talk about 'em. You want to see more threads getting started, then go on and start some more threads.

Fixed. (reference: bold)

The only exception is when DFM posts a new comic. Then activity happens, but otherwise, zilch.
