View Full Version : Does ANYONE like RTS games except for me?!

I started this thread becuse there didn't seem to be many (if any at all) RS threads. Quite obviously, if you're reading this, you prbably know that an RTS is a Real-Time Strategy Game. Anyway, RTS games are my favorites when coupled with RPGs, and there seems to be a certain repetativeness in the latest games. But I have found some (somewhat) unique games that may be worth trying. Pleasse, if anyone else finds one that is pretty unique, post it here (no, I don't mean AOM, AOE, StarCraft, Warcraft, etc. They were good when they came out, but, again, they've gotten repetative).
Here's my list of RTS Games that I have found that are (somewhat) out of the ordinary:
1) Battle Realms (Old game, yes, but uses slightly different tactics than other RTSs)
2) The Total War Games (Rome Total War, Medievil Total War, Shogun Total War) (very unique; somewhat like the Civiliation games, but these came out first (I think))
3) The Civilization Series (Again, like the Total War series, but I haven't found any games like these two since)
4) Spellforce (a RTS/RPG combo, qute unique)
5) Star Wars Empire at War (unique in many ways, very few similarities between this and other games)
Please, also, post any questions you may have such as:
Tips and Tricks
Advice
Favrite Units
etc.

I love Rome: Total war. Never actually managed to complete it though. It's a bit too long! If I ever do get round to finishing it I might get one of the others, (or more likely, I will start on the add-ons for it).
Personally though I still hold Red Alert two as the best RTS ever, especially with Yuris revenge.
EDIT: Almost forgot Age of Mythology. Bit better than AoE two and WAY better than the original.

I never finished Rome Total War either, but its still a good game. By the way, I said not to mention AOM because its basically one of the most popular games out there, and its format is repeated in many other games.

Totally agree with Hawk on RA2 and AoM. Don't mind Generals either.

(no, I don't mean AOM, AOE, StarCraft, Warcraft, etc. They were good when they came out, but, again, they've gotten repetative). You need to spend time with WC3's world editor. You can make damn near anything with that baby if you know how.
That said, I just like RTS games with expansions that actually expand. It continues the storyline, and slips in new gadgets to blow things up with. Games with a small number of radically different factions are also a plus (As opposed to a large number of them, only slightly different from each other, unit-wise).
That, and everything in the Command and Conquer series, save Generals. It features the kind of technology believable enough to make you wonder, "Okay, now why the hell don't we have this stuff in real life yet?" Its alternate-reality universe also offers a very nice story, right along with its live-action movies*.
The Civ series is undeniably awesome, but it's not remotely close to RTS. It's TBS (Turn-based), but that doesn't make it any less challenging to the mind. You gotta consider all your options, make sure your cities are happy and productive, and make sure nobody's trying to sneak a crapload of soldiers into your expanding empire. Budget, research, military... All gotta be balanced, and it keeps you on your toes.

The number of hour Ive played War Craft 3 are amazing. My personall favorites out of the user maps were group one where you had to defend youself from onsluaghts of NPCs. Renaming them to South Park or DBZ charaactors was just gravy.

What can i say? Once you have used a Tesla Coil, any game that dosent have one is a little lame... (I had bases with WALLS made of it!)
Also, there was one... i think it was called Impossible Creatures... its a RTS, but you play around with animal DNA to create your own units!
Really... it was hard to survive the power of my Flying Polar bears (A polar bear with huge Owl Wings) and Crab Land Sharks (Giant Crab w/ Shark head) army...

You know what, I always found RTS games way too difficult. There's so much micromanagement to do and a reletively short time to do it in. I respect you guys for being able to do all this in real time. That said, my brother was brilliant at Age of Mythologies.

Same here. Except my problem is not haveing all my units on screen all the time like i can do in other games.

Sorry, didn't recognise the shorthand there at first. Still a great game though, as others have also pointed out.

Yep, same here. I once had a base that (and I swear to god on this) was about half the map in size and comprised almost entirely of powerplants. Nuclear ones! I also had Tesla tropps on each one powering them up further! NOTHING could get through. Almost crashed my computer, it did!
I remember the first time I saw them though, back on the original RA. It was on one of those "save Tanya with a spy" type missions. I never realised what the Tesla was, so when our troops rolled in after, we appraoched with curiousity and no fear. It destroyed EVERy unit we had! It had a double wall around it, a small army defending it, as well as a ton of flame towers. We got decimated! Good times.
I also remember a game called Warzone2100, back on the PS1. It was a bit like RA but in 3D, and you had all different parts of vehichles that you could combine to customise your units. "Half" or "Fully tracked"? Or perhaps make it hover? "Big massive cannon" or "long range missiles"? That sort of thing. It was pretty good at the time, but most likely hasn't aged all too well now.

I have to admit I'm not a big RTS fan, but I "like" them. My favorites are Age of Mythology and Battle for Middle Earth, though way back in the day I played Starcraft and AOE2.
I actually have a copy of Company of Heroes, but never installed it. Anyone know if it's any good?

Meh, thats nothing! i usually make bases on those map corners, so i really only need to make One or 2 walls of it
My bases are usually pretty small but with huge defensive power!
Also, on AoE 2, its common for me to make walls made with 2 layers: 1 of stone walls and a second one behind it made fully of cannon towers (usually with a 1 or 2 empty spaces between them)

In my opinion tbs>Rts but I do indeed like Rts games and there are no post on it because there has not been a great post about it because a great, new, unqiue rts game not an exspansion has come out yet.

Does Sims count as a RTS? Nah...
But really, Rise of Nations is one of my favorite games, I love to play it and I still do, and I got it as soon as it was released. I have yet to play Rise of Legends, but I will soon hopefully.

You got that right! TBS ames are considered by many to be RTS games, though, because of the real-time batles. I never hooked on the traditional RTS as much because I like to micromanage and do so at my own pace, not race the computer for dominance of a single resource.
*Sigh*... Oh well.:sweatdrop

Actually most of us in here like RTS games! I mostly play WC3 but when my neighbor lends me his discs I help the Necron destroy the Tau scum in Warhammer 40k!

To be perfectly honest, I do enjoy RTS games. But I have found that the only difference between games are graphics, units, buildings, and terrain. But I still like them. It's just that real-time battles set in a TBS game usually are gorier and are argueably longer and with more strategic content.

there is an older RTS that i'm trying to find out the name for, i used to own it. it came out probably around the same time as total annihilation, it was set in the traditional post apocalyptic world, i can remember two of the teams/races on it, one was futuristic police, and one of the others was a group of death cultists. it was a game where you HAD to develop and design each individual type of units, (basically you would research the parts needed to make them, and then design using a pretty simple point and click interface)
the cultists had vehicles like semi's and volkswagon beetles.
any ideas of the name folks?

I remember another great RTS that was completely different to most: Dungeon Keeper!
DK was ace and the sequel improved on everything further. Who can forget when a Horned reaper first appears in the first game and promptly tries to kill all of your minions?! Or capturing all of your fallen enemies and imprisoning them so they became skeleton warriors? And making about 40 of said skeletons!!
I once locked a level 10 Dark angel in a 1 square by 1 square room with only a reinforced door between him and my keep. Needless to say, he was PISSED!!

I love the RTS genre, its pretty much what got me into gaming. Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War is definatly the best RTS i've ever played, but i'm not sure where the genre can go from here.
Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge was a long time favorite of mine. So many ways to demolish your opponents, all of them wonderful. I think i liked the S.Korea method best: build a ton of airfields and a ton of thier really nice jets. take pairs of them and blow a hole through thier AA defence, then the next wave hit thier power centers, then the next wave hit thier production buildings. send in ground forces to mop up.

Ugh... I hate the RTS genre. Played Age of Empires II...hated it! Mainly because I don't like being rushed to make tactical decisions (I am sort of an old geezer like that). For me, turn-based is the only way to go.

Yeah... I'm sort of lke that, but sort of not. I don't like making rushed decisions, not that I can't, but (I quote) "A hasty decision is a dangerous decision." Or something like that. Anyway, I find it better to take my time and proceed with caution. Yet I did say this was an RTS thread, so you're welcome to discuss RTS games. I'll start a TBS thread for all those that enjoy such games.:sweatdrop

Aye that game was awsome. It was fun to play for me, because there wasn't much actual micromanagment of the units mid battle, you could pick them up and move them, but they basialy did what they wanted. Horny going on a rampage on DK2 is one of the most satisfying sights ever :D

I suck at RTS. However I really love and still try to play Age of Empires II and the newer game, Company of Heroes. Company of heroes is AMAZING.
Don't like StarCraft though and WarCraft II was great but they shot the series in the head with WarCraft III and the obvious game that followed.

Total Annihilation is my all time favorite RTS, the custom units and unit AI made me happy as well as the ability to set a much better unit behavior than attack and hold ground. The ability to set up building plans was friggin amazing.
