Black Mage's main problem is that he doesn't really differentiate between people that will mope when he insults them and people that will kick him in the neck when he insults them. While Red Mage and Fighter clearly belong to the former, Thief belongs to the latter group. The one with the neck kicking.

As Thief's an elf, he took offense at Black Mage's "elven whore" comment, and Black Mage made it worse by implying Thief's mother was a whore. If she made dresses, he would have said "elven tailor," but as he said "whore"...
