I did a quick search and I din't come across this thead before, so sorry if this is a long dead subject. What do you guys think? If they were going to make an 8bit movie who would play all the characters? Living or dead, anybody.

Hey, I think this kinda-sorta got talked about before (it was more like "Who would voice the 8-Bit characters?"), but it was in a comic discussion thread from months back.

Anyway, Black Mage needs the voice of a dyed-in-the-wool weaselly bastard. But I personally can't quite imagine, say, Rowan Atkinson filling the role either, and he's the best weaselly bastard I know of. Just not homicidal enough, I think =P . I dunno who'd be good for this one Wait, what about someone like David Cross?

I tend to imagine Fighter in very "adult child" tones--so I'd cast Will Ferrell, on account of he does that pretty well. Barring that, Michael Palin dould do this.

Robert Llewellyn would be a very good Red Mage. Not that very many people here know who I'm talking about, but I still think so.

Thief...is hard to cast. You need someone whose every word oozes condescenscion and confidence rooted in his basic assumption of his superiority to absolutely everyone else he meets. I'm not at all sure who would work in that role, then.

And I doubt I'm the only one who does this, but whenever I read King Steve, I hear in my mind's ear Adam West, a la his turn in Family Guy.

Bruce Campbell gets my vote for Theif, I can't explain why.
White Mage should be Jenna Jameson.
Seconded on Will Ferrell for Fighter.
Red Mage should be played by the chick who played Peter Pan in that old musical.
Christopher Walken or Jack Nicholson get my vote for BM.
Chris Farley for BB.
EPS should be the girl who plays the GF of Jack Black's roommate in School of Rock.
Add Jack Black as Brian.

Black Mage needs to be someone used to suffering, so i'd have to say Will Arnet would be perfect.
I third Will Ferrell playing Fighter.
A good Thief would be Seth Green.
For Red Mage i think it would have to be Robin Williams.
Black Belt would HAVE to be Samuel L. Jackson.
No idea about White Mage.
An insane Adam West would be the perfect King Steve.
For Sarda, i'd have to say Lewis Black
Jack Black would make a good Garland.

I can't see Will Ferrell as Fighter. Not...really someone you'd expect to kill things.

Much as Ryan Reynolds would work quite well, I finally remembered who I thought of for Thief last time this came up: Hugh Laurie, doing something not unlike Dr. House.

And bear in mind, wazn, that you don't really see Fighter himself doing much killing. But you do see a lot of him being awfully childlike and offering comments like "I'm a helper!"

Hmm Hugh Laurie would make a good Thief, i mean i he's fantastic as Dr. House and the two of them are quite similar. The only problem is that Hugh might be a little to old to play the nimble Thief.

About the DWs... Who could be the actors for them?
Garland could be played by... I'd say it, but then I'd get flamed to death since no one likes his acting.
Hmm... Bikke... Who could be Bikke? Someone with experience in acting as a pirate... Uh... Johnny Depp?
Hell I have no idea about who could play the other two.

More like voices but...

BM: Rowan Atkinson, Lewis Black, Jack Nicholson (English Accent included)
Fighter: Someone who can pull of a "Caboose from Red Vs Blue" kind of performance, Tony Robinson (sans English Accent)
Thief: Phil Hartman (you said Living or Dead), Hugh Laurie, Will Arnet
Red Mage: Nathan Lane

This is all I can think of at the moment. Sorry if it's a poor list...

greed
12-14-2006, 01:13 AM
BM: David Cross, sounds good to me. You need someone who can do bitter, and would be pathetic if he weren't so evil.
Fighter: Will Ferrel, he can do the personality, not sure how he'd handle the times Fighter shows he's smarter than he seems, Ferrel's pretty 1 dimensional; goofy, stupid and childish is pretty mcuh all he does. He does it great though. He also has the right build, big and beefy.
Thief: Hugh Laurie in the vein of House, with bits of his Blackadder performance for Thief's stupid and petulant moments.

RM:Peter Sellers is all I can think. He could pull RM's completely messed up psyche perfectly.

Post others later.

King Steve: Marlon Brando ala Apocalypse Now.

hanzo66
12-14-2006, 05:33 AM
Garland: Michael Clark Duncan. Someone with a big, deep and intimidating voice talking about baking sugar cookies. Imagine that.

Bikke: Some two-bit actor from Pirates of the Carribean.

Drizz'l: Vin Diesel. He based Riddick off of a Drow in D&D.

Vilbert: Some emo kid you pick up from Hot Topic.

Satan's Onion
12-14-2006, 06:45 AM
Actually, hanzo, that's a good idea for Garland, but I always imagined more or less the opposite. Like Garland in his "evil voice" sounding terrifying and evil until he stops to complain that it's hurting his throat--at which point I think he ought to sound more like, say, Dave Foley or Kevin McDonald.

Ronfar
12-14-2006, 02:19 PM
I'd cast Leonardo DiCaprio as Thief, actually. He was good playing a similar role in "Catch Me If You Can."

Will Ferrel actually can act and does seem like a good choice for Fighter. He delivered a reasonable, non-goofy performance in "Stranger than Fiction," although he's still awful at being a charming romantic lead. I can also imagine Leslie Nielson, Adam Sandler, or Will Smith playing Fighter.

Red Mage is almost impossible to cast. I'd have to suggest someone like Mike Myers or Eddie Murphy. Both of them can do anything.

It's also very difficult for me to picture an actor for Black Mage. Mike Myers might be able to pull it off, and Jack Nicholson could make a valiant attempt. Also, I think the guy who plays House would make a better Black Mage than Thief. So much rage, bitterness, and frustration.

In general, though, 8-bit Theater doesn't feel like anything that could be transferred to film without becoming horrible.

Fighter = Keanu Reeves, Red Mage is that guy who plays Johnny Drama on Entourage, Thief is Sacha Baron Cohen, and in the part of Black Mage, Steve Buscemi.

Go ahead and argue, if you like being totally wrong!

Oh yeah, and Sarda has got to be Christopher Lambert Sean Connery Adam West.

Actually, I can imagine Hugh Laurie as Fighter. Not playing him the same way he does House, obviously, but I can see it work.

Rowan Atkinson I'm sure could do a decent Black Mage.

Actually, Meister, you have a good point there. Hugh Laurie was playing an almost Fighter-like type of dunderpate for years before he ever took up the role of Everybody's Favorite Bastard.

And I suppose if you didn't mind a more Colonel Melchett-y (from Blackadder Goes Forth) kind of King Steve (or Sarda, come to think), Stephen Fry would be a shoe-in for it.

Now, if only I could work in Chris Barrie somewhere...maybe Drizz'l?

Red Mage - Seth Green
Thief - Ryan Reynolds
Fighter - I actually think Michael Clark Duncan would fit better here.
Black Mage - Chris Kattan

White Mage - Scarlett Johanssen (with hair dyed red... damn... that'd be hot)
Blackbelt - Steve Oedekerk

Princess Sara - Nicole Kidman
King Steve - Brent Spiner

Akbar - Sasha Cohen

Just to let you know, I'm not going to cite actors to specific characters. I'm only going to give an indication as to the kind of voice I always imagined of each character, which are quite original in my opinion. It's never really applied as any voice to any other comedy. 8bit theater is rather original in itself afterall. Oh ya, and I never bothered to read the 2 pages in between 1 and 4. So!

Fighter: The guy from Dilbert who always yells every damn time he talks. That guy's also a dumbass. I even remember when fighter was supposed to keep his voice down in one of the comics but he couldn't, and they berated him for it. :P
At times, he might sound like one of those kids in those Hot Wheels commercials that are all like "Woah!" and "Cooool!" You know what I mean. ;)
Trust me, it'd fit.

Black Mage: He's got the "why me?" tone. He speaks in a spiteful and nasty way, but he's still whimpy of course. He sounds kinda like your angry nerd, or little weak guy that can at times sound REALLY pissed off. His tone sounds pretty "Oh come on" and suggests that he comes to rash and quick conclusions. His voice is related to that of the evil weaker kid who was abused at school for being weak, and has major plans for vengeance. His dignity is all he has, it seems, and his voice always suggests, upon being abused, "can I at least keep my dignity?". Can't remember if he's actually said that in the comic though. I think he said "Oh, my pride." once. :P Lol. He's got major confidence in his voice, as you can tell from many of the things he's said; however he's always proven wrong at some point. His voice also indicates that he's almost not at all afraid of being proven wrong (or unaware and doesn't think ahead), except from the same character who's done so repeatedly, and is not afraid at all of charging in to state his opinion on the matter. For those that prove him wrong, he has the highly vengeful pissed off tone, of desperately wanting to prove them wrong or stab them. He gets angrier and angrier, and yet ppl know he's too weak to do much.
If you still don't have an idea the voice is kinda what I used to describe as "crackly" back when I was about 9 years old. >_>
Oh, if you've seen "Mean Girls", you might know the Arabic guy who's leader of the Math League in the school in that movie, who had the description "Bad Ass MC" on his card. Black Mage would also most likely have the tone of one who continuely thinks he's a bad ass, and one who celebrates way too much at the most inappropriate times. He'd would NOT have the voice of a kid, rather the voice of an adult in his late 20's, applied to all the other crap I said above, relating to BM's voice.

Thief: Has a deep cunning voice (not darth vader deep though). Basically intelligent, high in tone but deep in volume (get it?). Also major ego, matter-of-factual (he makes the most sense of the group), and cunning of course. Thief reeks of cunning. Almost secret-agent snake tone.

Red Mage: He'd have a voice similiar to that of Seth Mcfarlane but on a higher tone. He sounds like he always has a unecessarily complex plan up his sleeve. "But wait! I... I might have something. Dammit!" kinda voice. :P
I had an idea of his voice that started out with the tone of a rich, fanny-boy type that was kinda girly with a high tone, but not in a gay tone or like that of a girl with a really high-pitched voice, mixed up with the usual "Jeeze already" and "Aww man!" He tries to speak eloquently and his tone comes from that. Of course he also screws up.
He'd definitely not have the "I'm famous, baby" voice from TRF or whatever the hell they're called. Alot of the time he'd have the tone of "Oh, I simply can't wait to explain this! I think I know! Huzzah!"; obviously desperate to explain something and overjoyed when given the slightest oppurtunity. :P He's got the tone of someone completely oblivious to being proven wrong.

Black Belt: Duff Man. Or Captain Zaph from Futurama.... but a little mixed up and slightly varied with the kicks and the "Ha!"

White Mage: High pitched and girly most of the time. But also kinda matter-of-factual in a normal womanly tone with a higher voice (but not like that of a teenaged woman, or complete nun; like TRF used). At times she's also nasty and grating when she commented on how death wasn't funny at all, when Black Mage said it was. She'd sound like the nervous woman in a soap opera during a discussion with her boyfriend/fiance when made an offer such as an Italian Dinner, and kind when talking down to someone.

Akbar: Harrassing, overweight, muscley guy. "C'mon, dammit!" He often sounds desperate, like a big car sales man who'd say "Oh c'mon sir, don't walk away!" Middle-aged, angry kinda guy that watches the game in the bar, and very chatty all the while.

Jeff: Sounds kinda like the guy from the Simpsons who's all like "Hey momma, can I have some cookies?" "No dice!" or "Do I have the deal fo' you!" Almost new-yorkish, I guess?

Sarda: The old guy who says "Yah whatever the hell." Hope that created a spark.

Garland: Pathetic, kinda like a momma's boy; but coming from a "mature", full-grown man. "This evil voice is hard. It makes my throat all gruff and sore!" He sounds pretty whiny and hopeful without his evil voice.

King Steve: Usually the "Oh my!" "Oh dear!", older man who sounds like a good-hearted, religious guy, but is actually not. Very egotistical of course. When he has an idea, he has the tone of someone that's just revealed some wonderful, family friendly news. When he laughs he might even go "Hohoho! Oh my yes, I'm brilliant. Afterall I invented inventing."
Adam West could also work. :P

Bikke: Highly exagerrated pirate voice. "But I thought they was glasses, yarr." or "Now, you shall hereby dubb me, this here, the claw, yarr." Almost enough to sound like the character himself is faking a pirate voice just to fit in and be cool; he's a pretty bad pirate after all. Not pathetic or hopeful though. Just pirate. Wouldn't be too loud, though, or annoying to sit through and meant to be in just the right tone to be funny. The TRF rendition of his voice sounded kid-oriented, like the announcer from Sponge Bob theme; I'd shoot for more of the "Old Sea Captain" from the Simpsons but slightly varied from that. I wouldn't want the spongebob voice, personally. It's just incredibly annoying. He also might sound like the one to speak in several of what you'd call "Malaproposisms". If you don't know what that means then you probably shouldn't be a part of any project to create a new 8bit flash series with better voices that aren't annoying to sit through. Brian probably didn't intend for Bikke to speak like the last part, though. :P

You guys seem to have some fair ideas for the Other Warriors...

So ya. Thanks for reading. Have a nice night. Safe driving on the way home. Payce out, brothas.

So uh ya... anyone for my voice ideas?

BM: I'd say O'Malley from Red Vs Blue (without the random evil laughter since BM has a rather dry sense of humor).

Fighter: Caboose. Period.

Thief: Someone who can pull off a "Conman" type of thing (Phil Hartman as Lyle Lanley maybe).

RM: The Flash Series has him down pat.

RM: The Flash Series has him down pat.
For the love of god... explain HOW EXACTLY!?

Sorry, but all the voices in the flash series just pissed me off; they're so damn annoying. =P

I have a perfect, completely original voice for RM in my head. Unfortunatley,
I can't really voice it out loud, because my voice acting skills suck. This voice, would probably require some serious voice acting. Seth Mcfarlane level. Doesn't mean Seth would actually play the voice, though. >_>

EDIT: Alright, that first thing I just said would definitely depict my image of RM's voice. :P Oh yeah, and caboose is perfect for fighter. :D

EDIT: Hey TopHat, we're talking about comedy, not kiddie 'serious'. I was looking at 8bit bordering on at least American Dad/FG style approach to comedy with the innuendo, rather then kiddie bullshit, that was apparently expressed in the flash series.

Phi

Oh, these types of threads always draw me in.

Fighter: I agree with most of the sentiments here. Caboose-like. Ferrell would be excellent.

Black Mage: Very hard to cast, mainly because the type of voice and demeanor that would be needed normally doesn't make it into acting. Buscemi is one of those 'he'd work' choices, but I don't think he'd pull off the angry well enough. 'Why me?' is the main inflection I get from BM more often than not. Here's a fresh idea: Wallace Shawn. For those unfamiliar, he played Vizzini in 'The Princess Bride'. 'Inconcievable!'

Red Mage: Very difficult as well because of the uniqueness of the character's psyche. If Christopher Lloyd was younger, his type of performance from 'Back to the Future' would be perfect. Maybe an Andy Kaufman in his prime?

Thief: Ryan Reynolds seems rather fitting, though a Hugh Laurie is an intriguing and wonderful idea. I could see him being elf-like, and he certainly has condascension going for him.

White Mage: Scarlet Johanssen seems a little 'over-the-top' for White Mage. She should be hot, but not OMGWTFHOT. More like 'Girl-Next-Door-In-Your-Dreams' hot. Someone like...Jennifer Morrison, who plays Cameron on 'House'. She's pulled off angry and peaceful on that show already.

Black Belt: Someone mentioned 'Duff Man' and that's perfect. As for an actual actor...I'd say Patrick Warburton.

King Steve: Adam West. Write it down.

Evil Princess Sara: Should be bombshell-ish. I'm drawing a blank here.

Sarda: Someone mentioned Christopher Walken here, he could most certainly work.

Garland: Ben Stiller. Envision his character from Dodgeball. I think it's perfect.

Drizz'l: The Dark Warriors are too comicial for a guy like Vin Deisel. Hugh Jackman could work. Maybe even Viggo Mortensen.

Bikke: Geoffery Rush. Can't understand what he's saying, and Barbosa is a rather close character. Perfect.

Goth Kid who's name I can't remember: Who cares, really? We'll say Seth Green because he'd make a mockery of it and make me giggle.

Akbar: Phil Hartman should go here. His 'salesman' voice is perfect.

entrando2
12-22-2006, 12:58 PM
Thief: Mark Hamill of the SW movies.
Black Mage: Takeshi Kitano, because of the comedian-action versality.
Black Belt: Steven Seagal. I have no doubt.
Fighter: This one is difficult... Antonio Banderas?
Red Mage: Jim Carrey? Of couse not! Malcolm McDowell can take the challenge.
White Mage: Someone hitting Kitano with a hammer? Diane Keaton is a good actress but... I don't know.

Personally I've always imagined Akbar with a really stupid Accent. Somewhat like Borat but only much more ridiculous to the point where people would go "What the hell kind of country did you come from?" or something similar.

Also if you want a pissed-off and angry sarcasm kind of thing for BM, Lewis Black seems to be like that constantly.

Hey that could work... personally I hate Milla's guts in everything she's probably done that I've seen. Even though she's somewhat hawt. :P

Though, the voice of Sara never sounded as out there as the other characters I imagined. All she needs is a spiteful voice attempting to sound nasty (like a female punk rock singer >_>), and the attempting to be honest with-her-dad voice. She'd also have to sound annoyed by incompetence, which might be difficult for Milla, considering she kinda sucks alot at everything I've seen her in. :P

Early light hearted Buffy for her good moments and Cruel Intentions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruel_Intentions) for EPS. Sadistic, patronising, psychopathic and machiavellian. The femme fatale thing wouldn't hurt in a movie adaption either.

Red Mage could be played by Zach Braff since he does the nerd thing well on Scrubs.
Tom Welling would make a good fighter.

Kay, this is what I meant by "frivolous" for Red Mage's voice. (http://databsod.ytmnd.com/) Trust me, it'd work. It wouldn't sound quite exactly like the singer-voice though. :P

EDIT: Try clicking the link twice, because it aborted the first time for me.

:/ I'm getting a whole lot of pain from reading these, and noting how many choices are people who would...completely fail to play the parts in a live-action scenario.

...granted, I can't imagine anyone who would. So, I'll just throw out my stock "I love the voice actors from the TLF/Meddros Animations!"

Although, If I really had my way, I'd switch Omahdon (voice of Black Mage) with me, since I'm actually much less pleasant than he, and probably less geeky too. He can be Red Mage.

Actually I love the voices in those as well, though I've always imagined Fighter to sound more "Caboose-ish".

Which guy? There's more than one guy.

This here makes me think of Rick Moranis, similar to his role as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs. Though, his voice might be better used elsewhere...

You obviously havent seen Blackadder 2 to 4

I have seen all of Blackadder, but I still tend not to think of Rowan Atkinson as quite the type that BM is: someone constantly fighting the urge for mass murder. To me he's more the type who fancies he can manipulate people like pawns on a chess board and ends up failing miserably; he doesn't think of simply blowing up the board and making up his own game, like Black Mage probably would were he not limited to one Hadoken daily and/or burdened with the presence of the other Lite Warriors (like the much more successfully manipulative Thief, who might also be adequately voiced by Rowan Atkinson).

I agree here.

I'd say that the guy who played the general in Blackadder Goes Forth would be perfect for King Steve though....

General Melchett is quite warlike and unreasonably violent...

However Adam West is usually agreed on just because he fits the part of a delusional and highly unfit leader well from playing Mayor Adam West on Family Guy.
