View Full Version : Getting a game tomorrow..but what one?

So tomorrow I'm going to grab another PC game so that I can at the very least have something besides RO to suck up my time.

I'm interested in something with massive replayability that was released recently. Something with depth and customization. Something that'll devour my time so rapidly and so easily that my days off of work will vanish into the netherworld.

Anything that doesn't require a gamepad is fine. Strategy games might be best...I don't know.

I rather like the Warlords series of RTS games :)

I have Warlords Battlecry 3. Something like 18 races, and like 21 classes for your hero. Its a fun game. Not for everyone though :P

Galactic Civilizations 2.

TBS akin to Civ III, except in space. Large control over which race you play (Custom!), how you conduct yourself (however you want!), and a ship builder. It's ridiculously fun. The soundtrack is a bit lacking, however; I play my own music in the background.

EDITUS: Geh. RTS != TBS

Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade

'nuff said.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. FPS/RPG hybrid set in an open, post apocalyptic world that is full of territorial combat, mutant hunts, artifact collecting, and an epic mystery to solve. Excellent game.

If your computer can handle it, Oblivion. If your computer can't then Morrowind. If your computer can't handle either I recommend a new computer. That is unless you already have them.

Then I suggest looking for one of the later games from the Myst series. I've not tried the MMORPG one but that seems so contrary to what Myst is that it can't possibly be as fun.

I'm not really that much into PC gaming because I am more interested in portables, but still, I like to play them.

Now, If you are looking for a PC game with a high replay value, customization and such, you can buy WoW: The Burning Crusade (as long as you have enough cash for the trial that is) or Oblivion. Those are the games I can recommend to you, but at the end, the choice will be yours. After all it is your money and you can waste it on anything you want.

On the first point, totally seconded. You'll be paralysed by the possibilities!

On the second bit, not quite so much. Myst != customizability or replayability. However, they take bloody forever to complete, so that may be a good compensation.

Remember for WoW you have a monthly fee. For something similar, but far cheaper, Guild Wars (Any of the 3) is roughly $50 with no subscription. It lacks rapid or simultaneous replayability, however, unless you're into PvP.

Also, if your computer can handle it, obligatory SupCom plug. Like all RTS games, though, be prepared to play multiplayer; that's where the real fun lies.

Pre-order Starcraft II.

Or buy Half-Life I, II, and Episode I. It's got a great plotline, HLI being just another day at the office, while HL2 informs you of a greater plot at work. HL2 is one of my favorite computer games.

Ok granted the Myst series does not have a lot of customization and once you've beaten it once you can usually beat it again without much of a challenge. However, the scenery is so fucking great that I've replayed them all several times just to sit and look. Plus even if you know how to solve he puzzles it can still take several hours to get through one.

I picked up supreme commander, and then went to leave and noticed something tucked away in the corner. I picked it up too.
So for 75 bucks I got: Supreme commander, Command & conquer: The First Decade(12 C&C games all in one box).

Arlan, bloody nice find. That should last you ages.

Sithdarth, I totally agree with you that the Myst series is awesome; however, he specifically asked for replayability, and that's just not there.

After ten minutes with Supreme commander I am flabbergasted. Never EVER have I EVER eeverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr seen such a massive field of combat in an RTS. Ever. I wandered some tanks over in a basic tank rush to an enemy base, expecting it to be right next door(I had full fog of war up)...and then I ran across an inland sea. Then I realized that hey..they were across the sea, across more land and across the hill after that land.

So....big. o.o

Biggest map with the game is 81 km by 81 km.

Fun fun :D

I assume it is also not for RTS noobs.

ArlanKels

To be honest? No.
Because an RTS noob going into that will be obscenely overwhelmed by the sheer size. I mean...I spent thirty seconds going from one side of my "island" to the other fully expecting the enemy to be there. Then it turns out they're at least twice the distance from me.
So I set up a miniature base at one of the two land-bridges, and then it turns out that my sight range(Which is huge) is still so small that people can wander on by me by going across that inland sea I talked about before, even when I have other units stationed at the other land bridge(Bombing the hell out of crappy enemy units).

So I end up setting up a radar station at my land bridge base, which reveals a bunch of engineer units waddling on by me toward my main base.

It's just..HUGE.
And you can scroll out and view every single thing on the map, and command it from that point of view.

I'm just not used to the immensity. It's just...HUGGEEE.
I should take some in-game pictures to show you how huge this hugeness is.

Eltargrim

The hugeness is quite seriously huge.

That isn't even one of the bigger maps...I think it's either a 10x10 or 20x20. It came with the demo.

I'm going to run an 81x81 with 7 Supreme AI in a FFA bloodbath. It's going to take hours. I'm in bliss :D

Yes, just like I'm too late to suggest Black and White 2.

What an ironic sentence.
