Like the title said, I'm getting a DS, and wanting to pick up a couple of games for it. Any suggestions?

Phoenix Wright, New Super Mario Bros., and Final Fantasy 3 are all fun.
Plus, they're all I was able to afford, and therefore all I can mention.

Mario Kart DS. It is one of those games that I have played so much that I wouldn't be surprised if the cartridge melted, but it is just as fun today as it was the day I got it.

Elite Beat Agents- rediculously funny.
Castlevania Portrait of Ruin- Castlevania the best its been since symphony of the night. Cause nothing beats Symphony of the Night.
Metroid Prime Hunters- Its Metroid Prime with better combat control.

Well, I'm fairly bad at rythem games like DDR and Guitar Hero (Don't ask.) so how much like that is EBA?

It's a rythm game, true and true.

Portrait of Ruin, Metroid Prime Hunters, Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin, Mario Kart DS, FUCKING PUZZLE QUEST!, Pokemon Diamond, Yoshi's Island DS, Trauma Center: UTK, and...um...New Super Mario Bros.

I think that's about it. Plus Puzzle Quest just started it's second production run, so there'll be copies in stores pretty soon.

Dunno about Trauma Center.....spent enough time in hospitols to know that I hate going to them.

Hmm Castlevania(both of them), Phoenix Wright(all of them), Pokemon Diamond, Mario and Luigi PiT, Kirby's Canvas Curse (often forgotten but VERY awesome) and Yoshi's Island 2 are what I recommend. Contact is also pretty good though good luck finding it now, it's old and ATLUS made.

I'll also warn against Metroid Prime Hunters or at least try beofre you buy, it never hooked me, also all control schemes tore my hands to shreds. May be different with a DS lite and if you're not left and big handed like me though. But that's something to make sure of before wasting money on it.

Oh and remember it's region free so if you see a game while overseas, or see one that's not getting out of Japan that you like the look of go for it there shouldn't be any hassles(I think with the Jap games you have to turn the DS' internal language to Japanese but you can do that and back anytime you start up the machine).

Oooo...That's something I never knew about. Especally with my job, and how often I go overseas, that's a good thing to keep in mind.

Advance Wars DS is pretty fun. I've personally clocked over 500 hours into it, so that must say something about it's re playability. Or my lack of a life.

Puzzle Quest is fun, Etrian Odyssey is also quite good (but hard), and New Super Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi, Mario Kart DS, Izuna, and Yoshi's Island all should be picked up at some point, in no particular order. Mario Kart should be higher if you can Wi-Fi easily.

Well, I'm fairly bad at rythem games like DDR and Guitar Hero (Don't ask.) so how much like that is EBA?

EBA isn't like DDR and Guitar Hero, eventhough people say it is. Its only similarity is it takes timing and uses Music with gameplay. However, my suggestion is not to get EBA and to get the game that spawned it, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!

There's a field of debate a mile long about which game is 'better' and truly, the same team did both games. However, eventhough both games are very different and EBA is aimed towards the 'American audiance' and features songs hand selected by the creators they thought the Americans would like over the Japanese ones, the fact remains the reason EBA was made was because 500,000+ people IN America were importing Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! from Japan, which couldn't be obtained in English and only for $55+ dollars, reguardless of this fact.

Clearly the Japanese version had something to it that made it very good. And this whole explination has just been my long round about way of saying I think EBA isn't as good as Ouendan. In song selection, senarios or keeping the comedic quirks the Japanese one had.

-----

Anyway, my whole boring shpeal overwith...

Must have DS Games:

Kirby Canvas Curse (Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, this is possibly still one of, if not the best DS game out there)
New Super Mario Bros
Pokemon Daimond/Pearl
Castleania Dawn of Sorrow (and Portrait of Ruin if you are a mediocre to large CV fan)

Games I warn against:
Children of Mana (Grindfest and every level is the same thing)
Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon (Same exact layout as Children of Mana/Dragon Quest Monsters and Grindfest)
Metroid Pinball (I love pinball games...but this one was a letdown)
Sonic Rush (Dancing Sonic...Tails with a horrible girls voice.....Only 2 playable characters....Bad use of 2 1/2D graphics....Easy gameplay added to rediculously stupid level design.... Man just stay away.)

Etrian Odyssey is a fun one that just came out recently. It's an old school style RPG where you form your own party to explore a labryinth. The touch screen is used to map each floor, and the top screen is a first person perspective of the action and any menu you see during the game. There is one town handled completely in a menu, the only walking you ever do is inside the labryinth. Fights are random encounter except for occasional onscreen enemies that are more difficult.

Brain Age. I've never tried Big Brain Academy but Brain Age was fun for a few weeks. Eventually I got bored of making sure to play it everyday, around the time I unlocked all of the games. It has some sudoku puzzles, but it's limited to the ones it comes with.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow are both pretty good. Dawn of Sorrow relies on a soul stealing system, where enemies have a chance of dropping their soul and you gain their power. Portrait of Ruin is played through the eyes of two characters, that you can switch between anytime. One is a melee fighter and the other uses magic. You'll find their equipment throughout the castle and as drops from monsters.

Some other suggestions:
Phoenix Wright
Feel the Magic:XYXX, but Warioware is probably more fun.
Trauma Center
Yoshi's Island DS. It seemed so easy in the first worlds but the difficulty of the last world, to me, scaled unaccordingly with the rest of the game.

I second Final Fantasy 3, its a good game even if it is a little on the more challenging side for an RPG. For another fairly decent squeenix game pick up Children of Mana

Pokemon if thats your cup of tea, personally I love me some Pokemon game.

I also put up my vote for Portrait of Ruin, its got good re-playability.

Mario and Luigi is good if painfully short, also it doesn't really have that much replay.

If you got a friend with a DS I highly recommend getting Advance Wars DS. If they have their own cart, then it is even better.

Kirby Canvas Curse is so much fun it should be illegal.

All the nintendo made platformers are instant recommends. IE New Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 64 DS, Super Princess Peach, Yoshi's Island DS...

Don't forget that there are many cool games coming out really soon, some I am personally looking out for are:
SimCity DS
Worms: Open Warfare 2
Heroes of Mana
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Final Fantasy IV
Dragon Quest IX
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword

Sonic rush ... Only 2 playable characters
I thought that's an improvement for a Sonic game...?

I thought that's an improvement for a Sonic game...?

No...not when for a bit they kept adding good characters like Amy, Cream and etc. While improving the sprites for the already existing greats of Tails, Knuckles and Sonic. Peaking in my opinion with Sonic Advance 2. Then suddenly Sonic Rush comes out and...they introduce a new character like they usually do, but she's not fun. And all the past good characters aren't playable except Sonic.

...that's a downgrade.

I don't think I'll get SimCity DS. I got the origional one for the PC.

So do I, but I spend a lot of my day on the go, and I rarely find myself at home.

My DS has become my constant companion when it comes to entertainment on the go.

I got both Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan, and I recommend both wholeheartedly. Ouendan 2 is out (or should be out soon), but I haven't played it so I don't know if it's better or worse...

FUCKING PUZZLE QUEST!

Ditto. It's good because you can play it in extremely small increments and still make progress in the game. And it's just plain fun.

They brought Diablo II to DS and renamed it to Puzzle Quest? What an odd name...

Lol, seriously though, that's exacty how I describe Diablo II. Its like an MMORPG. Only fun, with actual action based combat and you can progress through the game without having to spend 3-10 hours each day of your life to it for 2-10 years.

Man...suddenly the thought of them making a follow up to Diablo II on the DS is just....ok. Not going to even try to go there because it will never, ever happen. We have a better chance of the original Chrono team coming back to do a third Chrono and Lara Croft getting a breast reduction then Diablo III being done by the staff that did Diablo I and II, let alone on DS.

I'll settle for someone making a good Seiken Densetsu III clone.

I'm just waiting for the announcement I really want to happen:

Shigueru Miyamoto: "We're doing a remake ala Zero Mission to Super Metroid. It's going to be released on the Game Boy DS, and graphics will be a mixture of 2 1/2 D and sprite-based. We'll be using the top screen for gameplay, and the bottom will be a touch-sensitive equipment/reserve tank screen combined with the map system. Included in the remake, on the cartridge, is the original Super Metroid."

I mean, come on. I've been waiting for this announcement for years.

I don't think there are words to describe my desire for such a thing to be created. So much remake potential for the DS, and as long as it wasn't something they released for the GBA (blasted FFIV) I'd be willing to buy most of it.

It...doesn't...need...to...be...made....

Do you even realize why Zero Mission was made? And the fact that Super Metroid already IS a type of Remake of Metroid 1 (in all ways except the storyline). Kind of like Castlevania I was remade into Castlevania IV/Bloodlines/Castlevania AlphaOmega79SimonGoesOutForLunch

And Guildwars. But because they went off and made an MMORPG they are dead to me. =\

Such a pity. Especially right after making the ultimate psuedo MMORPG space filler.

What's wrong with this picture?

Yeah, I don't think so.
