View Full Version : Is Red Mage Really a Red Mage?

Unless I'm very much mistaken, we're approaching strip 400 and Red Mage has still not cast a single god-damn spell except for that lensflare spell he used when introducing himself. Any time Red Mage casting a spell is even considered he does all that is in his power to avoid it. (See Episode 92 (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=011102) for details.)
In recent a strips, Black Mage was killed by Lich. Red Mage, supposedly knowing White Magic, should have been able to save him, but noooo. Instead, he wasted his time trying to multiclass with the class beastmaster. I have searched every D&D Players/DM guide I own and have come to the conclusion that Beastmaster does not/ never did exist. Was this time wasting accidental or intentional?
I now leave you to answer the question: Does Red Mage really know magic, or is he hidding something?

He's probably not hidding something, although he could be hiding something.
Who knows? Maybe RM's ability to perfectly roll dice and know "great strategies" on how to get out of everything is is magic according to this webcomic.
I mean, do you ever see Fighter shooting for lucky 7's?

Good point. Still, I can't help but wonder: Maybe he's pretending to know magic to impress his father. Remember in one of the strips he says "Why didn't you love me, Daddy?"

Has everyone forgotten the spell he used to hide the LW's identities through dwarf country? It worked when Thief and BM weren't around! And the ice spell that got them out of the deathtrap on fire! With RM they'd long be the toasty warriors. And BM would be foot fungus.

I don't recall that ever happening. Please send me the strip numbers so that I will believe you.

Right there, Fighter talks about an ice spell RM used to get them out of the death trap. While we don't actually see the spell being cast, it doesn't mean it wasn't!

In this one we actually see Rm cast a spell, with its own sound effect and everything.
So there you go, RM does use his spells when it's convenient for him. Or he gets that rarely used flash of insight.

So perhaps he is a Red Mage. I still find he sometimes doesn't use spells when he should. Anyway, I have just about the worst memory in the world so I blame myself for even putting up pointless this board. Oh well! I still hate Red Mage and that's what matters.

Hey it was a good theory, and you can't make something that everybody likes, so don't let it get ya down. However, he also cast a light spell. http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=020704.
And beastmaster is a final fantasy class, not a d&d class. Well, it's also probably in a few of the numerous other tabletop RPG's, but the comic sorta mixes every RPG rule into one, so it doesn't matter.
