LP: Seiken Densetsu 3! Starting!

Seiken Densetsu 3 is the sequel to Secret of Mana, never released outside of Japan. It's a great RPG game for the SNES, featuring 6 playable characters each with a bunch of different classes. So, let's start!

So, possible characters!
Top Row:

Duran - Swordsman guy, usually hits hard but is a bit slow-ish. Comes from Forcena, the Earth Kingdom.

Kevin - Grappler, has a second special with every class but his starting one that's a throw, son of a wolfman and a human woman, turns into a werewolf at night. Comes from the Beast Kingdom.

Hawk - Thief extraordinaire, lives in the Navarre Fortress, in the middle of a desert. populated by fellow thieves and ninjas. Best friend of the king of the thieves' son, also really likes the daughter of said king.

Bottom Row:

Angela - Princess of the cold, cold kingdom of Altena. Pretends to know magic, but slacks off too much to actually learn something. Is amazingly able to live in a place where it snows constantly wearing only boots, gloves and an one-piece swimsuit.

Carlie/Charlotte - Granddaughter of the Priest of Light, lost her parents when she was even younger. Can use healing magic with some help, usually being the default healer of any party she's in. Lives in the Holy City of Wendel, trying to find stuff to do because it's a church and she's constantly bored.

Lise/Riesz - Princess of the Wind Kingdom of Rolante. Also an amazon patrolling most of the time. Has a little brother.

And now, pick three characters. First one will be the protagonist, obviously, the second two will join up at certain points early in the game. The protagonist is who determines what story path ends up happening near the end, so bear that in mind too.

Also, I'm aware of the size of the pictures, but there's no way to take bigger screenshots. I could get the screenshots and resize them, but that'd still leave the text blurry. We'll have a vote on that, too, unless someone finds an emulator which always me to get bigger screenshots.

Also: When picking the characters, pick names, too.

More information: The game has two class changes which change the spells/skills the characters can learn, their status caps, their special attacks, their big status screen picture and a change in their clothes to a recolor. Specially for Duran's light classes ( we'll get on to that ) he also gets to wear a shield.
So, there's a class change at 18 for a Light and a Dark class, and another at 38 for Light-Light, Light-Dark, Dark-Light, Dark-Dark classes.

Also, the text is really only a problem for menus, so you don't really need to worry as far as the resizing is concerned. Personally, I use ZSNES, which has an option to magnify the emulator to 2/3/4 times. Which is nice.

It seems no one likes Duelist/Paladin Duran. Seems like most people here don't know about the class changes, but, basically, the end result:
Kevin - Two classes are completely broken, two are average.
Duran - One is stronger than Kevin's strongest werewolf form, but slower. Another can end up horribly broken with the right equipment. The other two are okay.
Hawk - Two are above-average, two are average.
Angela - Average to semi-great on all.
Carlie - Two are gods of healing, two are okay-ish.
Lise - One is terrible, the other three are great.

Why Marx when you can be Lenin or Stalin?Because "Marx" by itself is a reasonable name that doesn't necessarily carry any subtext in, say, a video game. But it matches up with "Karl" nicely.

Lenin or Stalin is just too obvious about it, and doesn't match up with "Karl" at all. The only real appeal behind it is the "lol Stalin" factor.

Everyone is out for revenge maybe not Angela, since she's out...For jealously or something. Duran is trying to avenge half of his kingdom's deaths because of the Crimson Wizard. It's not as personal as Hawk's best friend being mind controlled to kill Hawk and Hawk defending himself and the father of said best friend, the king of bandits, being mind controlled by a demon and then killed...Or Carlie's caretaker changing sides and leaving her...Or Kevin's dog turning into a rampaging wolf, forcing Kevin to kill it...Or Angela's mother wanting to sacrifice her to get more magic...Or Lise's dad being killed and her brother being kidnapped to be then sold into slavery and possibly sacrificed...Okay, fine, they're all equally tragic except for Carlie's.

Kevin's main plot is the best, and a team of Kevin, Hawk, and Carlie is completely unbeatable (and very entertaining) in my opinion. Angela and Duran always annoy the hell out of me, and I find that speed (Kevin and Hawk) trumps power in this game. With Carlie on healz and supportz, its the best trio IMHO, and I've tried every combination of characters in this game.

Besides, its worth it to have Kevin as the main character just to watch him plow through a stone wall because his dog died.... Also, he hits almost as hard as Duran in the night time while twice as fast.

And I like the original names.

Duelist Duran can do straight 700s at high levels where Kevin would be hitting for 300s per punch. Duran can hit twice while Kevin hits four times, so Duran still wins. Not to mention Paladin Duran with any shield and an agility buff makes him dodge nearly everything. With the sacred shield, he even gets to ignore a third of all elemental damage inflicted to him. Guy's a beast.

Wanderer Hawk + Swordmaster Duran + Deathhand Kevin. Poison Bubble, Moon Saber and crazy damage, in that order, if powergaming is wanted. Seriously. I'm not entirely sure if Poison Bubble and Moon Saber stack, though, but thanks to Poison Bubble you can spam Moon Saber, anyway.

They attack you on sight if they're not asleep. As does everything else. I think self defense is a pretty good reason.

And we are greeted by a Battum. They're bats. They attack by biting and sometimes use an ability, Sound Wave. It does damage and I think it sometimes does some status effect. They're pretty easy to fight, though.

That's a Myconid. We already fought some, but now they're actually using their ability, Super Spores. It does damage and can poison, I believe. They also got another ability, but it's very hard to see them use...I don't remember the name, but they spin around and deal damage. Like Battuns, those are pretty easy.

And we are greeted by a Battum. They're bats. They attack by biting and sometimes use an ability, Sound Wave. It does damage and I think it sometimes does some status effect. They're pretty easy to fight, though.Sound Wave lowers all stats. Not pleasant, but they usually die before they can do it.

Barks leveled up. As you can see, PIE is short for Spirit. Do not ask me why.PIE is short for Piety.

That's a Myconid. We already fought some, but now they're actually using their ability, Super Spores. It does damage and can poison, I believe. They also got another ability, but it's very hard to see them use...I don't remember the name, but they spin around and deal damage. Like Battuns, those are pretty easy.Don't forget Sleep Spores!

And that's where we are now in the world map. That village north-east of our current location was Astoria. Wendel's to west and to the east in the desert it's...I forgot the name of the town. It's a small desert town, though.Sultan.

Another Treasure! This time it's an Ogre Box.

They basically mimic a treasure chest and then attack you. They scale up to the level of the character who opened the treasure chest and after defeated can drop another treasure chest who can turn into an Ogre Box too. That can go on endlessy if you're lucky/save scumming enough. They give some pretty good experience at later levels, too, but start to become hard hitters very soon. They have an ability called Angrrrrry ( number of Rs can be wrong ) which increases their attack for a while.

Aah, Goblins. They sleep most of the time, but if you get close to them or hit their friends too much they wake up. They're not strong, but they got an ability called Axe Throw which deals a LOT of damage at early levels. One of them hit Barks for 60 with one in one of those battles.

Guys, I was going to make an update now but I've been talking with some friends and I got an idea. Basically, I want to flesh out the personalities and inclinations of the characters more but it could be a problem if I make Barks be out for revenge, trying to do everything to kill the Beast King and then he turns into a God Hand who is, well, a terrific monk which doesn't care about revenge, for example. So, there's going to be a few votes now:
a) Do I simply pick the classes I want and roll with it or...
b) I present all the classes that can be picked and then you people vote for them and then I make a story that fits for those classes.

The same can be said of nearly every RPG ever made, except the ones that force you into battles without letting you train outside of them ( like most of the Fire Emblem series ) and those tend to be hard. And, really, I know most of the layout of the game ( except for the Moonshade and the Lampshade forests ) so I'll just walk around without running around trying to grind anyway. And, really, you think the game is hard? Try a boss battle if you don't have any healing and no Kevin nor Duran. Your party will go down easily. Especially when fighting Lugar and Bill&Ben.

First of all, as some of you don't know, each character can change their class once at level 18 to a Light or a Dark class. Afterwards, they can also change again at level 38 to a Light-Light or Light-Dark for the Light class or Dark-Light or Dark-Dark for the Dark class. And now, the classes:

He learns how to use Heal Light and Pressure Point, which grants him most of the werewolf's strength during the day.

Every punch and kick he delivers has divine strength backing it up and only to be used against evil. He has mastered every single aspect of his form and has learned how to channel his divine power into a powerful energy attack called Byakko Shockwave and the Aura Wave, a spell which charges a character's special meter completely instantly.

Exactly. It's not really that useful to both have jutsus and stat downs: It's either one or the other. Jutsus and stat ups are good, since stat ups always work. Wanderer and Rogue do get some pretty sweet spells too which don't conflict with Lise's classes at all.

I agree that you should get Godhand. The magic spell he learns will be useful and healing is good always.
I would really, really want Hawk be Nightblade (very versalite like all Hawk's classes), but the fact is, that Lise's Light classes' summons just plain suck and that earlier mention that it's not useful having dark Lise and dark Hawk. Dark Hawk is somewhat more useful in my opinion than dark Lise as he learns more spells/skills which have negative effect on enemies. Shuriken is so cheap.
But light thing, yeeees, well, let's pick warrender. But which one of Hawk's light classes learns that silver arrow? It will be somewhat useful.
Lise as Fenrir knight, yeeah. Let the stats go down.

New enemies! Those two flying bugs are Assassin Bugs. They're not strong, but can poison with their normal attacks and have a skill called Venom which poisons.

Alright, those are the Machine Golems. They're strong and have a couple of skills. I couldn't take any decent pictures of said skills, though. Basically, they have Drill Missile, which deals around 30 damage in a line, which they usually aim terribly and then there's Rocket Launcher which shoots a bunch of exploding darts.

Well there are very few things to choose in Seiken Densetsu 3.
Chacters and their classes are the most obvious and the most important.
Then there is choosing that are you fucking idiot and give Watts 3000 gil, choosing who is ghost during ghostship adventure, the chose between fire and water manastone, the order of killing manabeasts and uhm, nothing else doesn't come to my mind now.

But well, may I suggest something. As we have picker their classes we also picked their alignment, we can discuss if there would be turning points when they start think their reasons to do what they do. I don't think that moment when they choose their classes is good because there's better moments.
And that's why I suggest these moments:
Lise will think more and more about revenge when they meet Jagan in Bucca's island as there is talk about Elliot.
Hawk will be pleased when he finds Jessica and so on. And Barks facing Lugar naturally. The talky part.
We can think that Barks and Hawk will anyway become light guys as they think that being light is good thing, but Lise doesn't anymore have faith in that and she turns in darker path to do her good deeds. Because really, in the end they all are heroes, wee.

Or then you can continue with this way and ignore what I just say as you are doing good job.

As Watts from Sword of Mana was the sweet guy who would upgrade your weapons (with price) I would say that FFA's Watts is the middle one of that family lineage. Sure some one could say that Watts and Watts from SoM and FFA could be same Watts but the other makes armor and the other makes weapons.

FFA => Mystic Quest, at least, here in the Netherlands. I love that game, pretty much knew where to go all the time, even in dungeons. It didn't have elemental spirits though, just Magic Book of ...
At least Watts (vendor iirc) was more useful as companion that, say, Bogart (bla-bla) or Lester (change music xP)

There are eight mana stones. Mana comes from them. They're guarded each by one of the elemental spirits, which we've found two - Wisp and Gnome - and so there's six left. The party needs help of Jinn, the wind elemental, to get to the others and thus, they have to go to Rolante, Lise's home kingdom. The fastest way is to go through the sea to Palo, by taking the ship in Byzel.

Since Ryong failed to mention it, I shall note that the Black Market is the only place in the world to buy a LOT of things, but the most valuable is by far the Poto Oils, which allow you to instantly cast a multi-target Heal Light.

Also, claws have the same effect as Saber spells, which is really nice versus a few bosses...

I'm calling it quits to the LP. Two weeks ago, I was angry at everything because my internet constantly dying and whenever I called support they'd refuse to send a tech guy here to fix it, even though I'd pay for the guy's visit if it was really just me being dumb. Last week I went on a trip. Those two weeks killed most of my drive for playing. I've a month before my classes start and at which point I'll have very, very little free time. Updating a LP isn't a fast thing. Today, I was going to do an update. I was going to try something different with actual dialogue made by me. Sure, the dialogue worked out great, 'til I noticed the program I was using for screenshots had stopped taking said screenshots and so I had lost a hour of playthrough and had already saved over. Taking the screenshots and uploading them is the real problem. The LP had a bunch of people at the start and then three updates later it was already a tenth of the people following, anyway. Sorry to disappoint you few. For a year. I didn't want to end this, but now I'm finally on my break again and I guarantee I'll finish it. As y'all can see below, there's an update involving no pictures already. Gonna mix things up a bit, but expect at least two updates this week. Side-story updates will not feature pictures as they'd be just a lot of sprite edits. Also, narrating!

A year has passed. Our heroes have arrived in Rolante, but have found themselves unable to do anything against the military of Navarre, who has taken over the kingdom. Yet, somewhere else, a man and a woman talk about their future.

"I've a thing to do. Back in Forcena."
"Right, your family doesn't want to kill you. What for, though?"
"You'll see."
"It's about your sword, isn't it?"
"...Yes."
"Do I have to go, too?"
"If you want."
"Then let's go. I can't practice here, anyway."
"What of her?"
"I think she'll be better off without us, really. No reason to drag her in this any more."
"Yeah. She's too young for stuff like this. We're off."

They have been training, practicing to be masters of their art. The man could barely fight off a rabite, but now his skill with the blade is unparalleled. She would fail to cast the simplest of spells, yet now she can tear land apart with ease. In the harshest of places they fought monsters, striving for perfection, to fulfill their quests for revenge. Revenge against the man who killed his kingdom and took control of hers. The child that accompanied them was pure, innocent to the evils of the world. They had taken her with them, not to get help on their quest, but to show her the world. That task was completed and so they left her asleep in the hotel room, with enough luc to go wherever she could want. She was smart enough to understand, they hoped.

Okay, I don't think we've fought chibi-devils yet, but the gist of it is that they're weak and sometimes can shrink one of your guys with Chibikko Balloon. Nothing noteworthy.

Needlebirds aren't strong, but usually swarm you, which can be annoying. They can also use Yellow Wind - even with pink feathers - which lowers the defense of one target.

Any chance that I could throw in my vote for class changes since you haven't gotten to that point yet?
Warrior Monk, Star Lancer and Ninja Master makes for nifty survival group since it gives unlimited healing (MP leeching combined with all target heal), Stat Down All (Ninja Master) to reduce the potency/defensiveness of the foe as well as Stat Up All to increase the allies power and defensiveness. With a few castings (no limit due to MP leeching) of each of those stats ups and down, the total difference will help rip through the foes. In addition, there is the powerful Summon Marduk and the stat downs are accompanied by multiple element attacks which can be damn useful against the god-beasts.

In comparision, God-hand and Wanderer both got Aura Wave and yet only the Wanderer has unlimited MP (and no actual healing spells). During a long battle, resources might run low...

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing how this goes.
