View Full Version : 8-bit theater: A "boys only" thing?
OK, I've been commenting on the comics here for a while now and have rarly ever seen any other girls commenting (and if they did, I didn't identify them as female).
I know, 8-bit theater isn't really what you accept to be "stereotypical" womans-entertaiment, and, granted, I'm an alomost-hardcore Otaku (google it, if you don't know the term),
but are there really almost no girls, beside myself, reading those great comics?
I didn't know my gender was THAT easily shocked by some gore humor (granted, that are not my favorite parts of the comic) and homocidial characters....
However, if I'm wrong, and there ARE a lot of other girls readin those comics, please tell me. ^^;
I know that I'm weird, but I don't ever came to the thought, that I was "un-feminin"....

:brow: Seriously?
Yeah, there are girls and even women on the forum. It's just, not everybody with a girl in their avatar is female, and not everyone with a boy is male.

Uh... here's a question. How do you know that all the people commenting are GUYS in the first place? The problem you're having seems to be from making an assumption about every person who posts, or assuming that every girl who posts needs to have a bright neon sign on their profile saying "GIRL HERE!"
That said, ladies read the forums and the comics.
I was under the impression that cynical world-hating was mostly a male preserve.

I think webcomics are great for girls. As long as you get all the bookmarks set up for them, viewing a website is a fairly simple task that they can be taught to perform with minimal effort. Webcomics are a great way to give the modern housewife some entertainment while she cooks dinner or cleans. Just remember that overstimulation can lead to hysteria.
It's a brave new world we live in.

I know just as many women who read this thing as men, I think (considering folks I know in meatspace, not here).

Well, I am female, but then again my posts are usually ignored if I'm lucky, or mocked and criticized if I'm unlucky, so I just tend to stay quiet.
Well obviously you need a bright neon sign saying "GIRL HERE" somewhere every time you post, then we won't ridicule you as much!

I don't know how to begin addressing the ways in which the original post irritates me.

Hey, wait. You didn't add any giggles or ^_^ things, so I guess you aren't a girl.

If Brian's girlfriend isn't actually a woman I think there's something wrong in the world. Because since when girlfriends have been men, I'm just asking.
And some mods are women, my sister reads this, and some people in these forums are clearly women. They just don't post to this forum area that much.

But THAT'S what I'm talking about! This forum arena, where the wild 8-bit guessing takes place! Even the female mods hardly ever show up here!

They don't need to guess anymore. They already know that Brian is just a big meanie.

I guess the ladies around here just get caught up in things other than wildly guessing about a webcomic. Sorry about that.

I would guess that this isn't a case of being a 'boy's thing' so much as a case of demographics. As in, most of the participants in internet culture being males.
And of course I don't mean that only men use the internet -- pretty much everyone uses the net in some form -- but that most people who belong to internet culture -- such as these forums -- are men.
Why is this? No way to be 100% certain, but I would guess that it arises out of an ease of networking technology along with social isolation -- predominantly among the male population. Again, I'm only guessing and applying in general terms. People (mainly males) who can't interact face-to-face for whatever reason, turn to the internet to socialize.
And, as naturally happens in real life, people gravitate towards groups of shared interests, like 8-Bit Theater. So then, I wouldn't say that the forum's gender balance is because of 8-Bit being a 'boy's thing' but because of overall demographics of internet culture.

I'm a girl and I read it and two other friends who are girls of mine do too. I love Final Fantasy and Brian makes FF1 more interesting :).

If you look at it this way, I'm pretty sure 99% of the community reads the comics, but not everyone feels the need to comment. I'll admit my input here has become infrequent at best, simply because if I don't have anything to add, I don't add it.
Girls on the forum, aside from those who have already posted, include:
- CelesJessa
- Lady Cygnet
- Mesden
- Flarecobra
- Satan's Onion
- Arhra
- Mauve Mage
- Batgirl
- Katiuska
- Cati
and others that I'm probably forgetting and will be made to feel horrible about.
I'm pretty sure the female subscription rate would increase proportionally to the amount of guy-sprite on guy-sprite action there is. I mean it seems to work for every other game/animation/fan-fic medium.....why not here?

I'm closing this before it gets even dumber, and I seriously don't care if that's unfair or whatever.
