I'm not sure how far the news has spread of the ice storm that has recently hit Arkansas and its surrounding states but I thought I'd share some photos of the devastation that has taken place.
I've been one of the fortunate few who have managed to keep my electricity for most of this past week.

Wow, we don't see much of that down here in Florida. Almost makes the hurricanes seem worth it..

Good to see you and yours made it through the storm alright.
We're getting severe icy weather as well. West Virginia.

Texas got one quarter of a inch...and a snow day! Pfft, newbs. Last month we got 2 1/2 feet over the space of a week and still only had one snow day for the public schools.
Also, Terex, crazy pics, especially that 'none shall pass!' one.

Think about all the snow plows and ice trucks we have down here...4 inches could shut down our city. and my school district is always the last to close (not joking our school had someone slide in the ice and run into the sign out front and they still continued school)

I was without power for two days. My parents will be until "sunday or wednesday".
My car had like, 3 - 4 cm of ice covering it. It was awesome. The fact that my Calculus II class is going on like we didn't miss three days of classes is not, though. God, the studying...
I should take a picture of the scene around here. The way the trees look when you pull into my apartment complex is just beautiful.

Pfft, newbs. Last month we got 2 1/2 feet over the space of a week and still only had one snow day for the public schools.Pfft, that's only .2 inches of snow per hour. That's easy enough to keep up with, so long as the plows/salt trucks don't wait until after the first 4 inches fell to get out.
Here in St. Louis, the winter storms tend to follow an interesting pattern of snow - freezing rain - snow - freezing rain. So, while the accumulation may not be 'impressive' sounding to you northern states, keep in mind this is less a lot of loose material, more like a thick shell covering everything that also likes to be stubborn.

The last snow day my city had was in April of 1997, due to the blizzard that caused the largest flood of the Red River in 150 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_Red_River_Flood).
My conclusion?
Snow days are for wimps.
Ice storms, though, are some scary shit. Glad to hear you're all ok; I hope power comes back on soon for your loved ones.

A week after Thanksgiving in 2006 was when a major ice storm hit here in St. Louis. Freezing Rain fell for 10 hours straight. People were without power for weeks, the area was declared a disaster area.
Sunrise the next day was one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sights ever. The sunlight refracting and reflecting through all that ice is simply amazing. It's weird that such destruction brings such beauty.

It's cold in Louisiana. That's not right.
Granted, I start claiming Ragnarök is at hand somewhere around fourty.

Probably caused a few cases of snow blindness, too.

Life seems to be returning more or less to normal here in NW Arkansas. Though I hear we're supposed to get hit again on Sunday...yay.
I have to agree Mike. The scenery has been beautiful, not to mention interesting to watch as the trees literally fall to pieces around you.

Probably caused a few cases of snow blindness, too.I was having such a nice moment of appreciation for the duality of nature, a thing of beauty and a thing of destruction. Alas.
After a couple of days where the temp approached 50, there's still significant snow on the ground here. At least it melted enough that the walk to the train station shouldn't be bad in the morning.
