View Full Version : Fighting a Battle

In past several months, my life has been filled with challenges. Feeling lonely and irritable, I turned to smoking in hopes of relieving my stress. It turns out that smoking is just another source of stress when I try to quit. Its bad for my health, and a dirty habit all of its own. Also, its putting money directly into the pocket of "Uncle Sam," keeping miserable programs like public education and free abortion clinics running full strength. It also takes time to do and fall under the influence of, time that could be better spent having some sort of pixelated or MIDI composing project. What I feel will help is some encouragement from my new set of peers here at NPF, or perhaps a set of challenges or games that involve avoiding the daily ritual of nicotine intake.

Any and all ideas are welcome, even if they're crazy or seem worthless. I am an addict, and any addiction we can share on these forums would be healthier and more constructive. If you'll join me in this battle, thanks. Something is bound to work, and I'll be damned to a painful, shortened life as a chimney if I don't try.

You need a new habit to replace your current one.

I hear meth is all the rage these days, you should look into that.

Not exactly an option when you're halfway through a six year military contract. Also, not a good idea. Methamphetamines cause hallucinations and a number of chemical imbalances. They also make you retarded. Oh, and its illegal. Not just for kicks like that law against pot, but illegal to protect people from it.

What? No dude look that's just more of that nonsense the liberal media tries to push. What are you going to trust them? You need a healthy, natural outlet for all that time and energy you're burning up with those nasty-ass nicotine sticks and Meth is just the thing you're looking for.

Just try it out for a couple weeks! I'm telling you those cigarette cravings won't be bothering you at all.

Learn how to snap your fingers. That way you can be just as obnoxious as a smoker without harming yourself! Nobody can really quantify the harm caused by your constant annoying snapping, so unless they're a direct superior there's really nothing they can do about it. Plus, you can quickly identify fellow nerds: They'll bring up Snapper Carr.

BUT SERIOUSLY: Get into arguments on the internet. That kind of thing eats time and nervous energy like no other. There's all kinds of stuff you can get up to on forums just like this, like sneaking TVTropes links (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrickingTheShapeshifter) into posts you make near midnight. It's 10 points for every hour of Fifthfiend (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EnemyToAllLivingThings)'s life you manage to destroy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TVTropesWillRuinYourLife), and a x3 multiplier if he's got work in the morning.

Oh my god the trope of TV Tropes has a Trope on itself.

The resulting meta will loop and feedback causing destruction on a global scale.

OH YEAH TOPIC: What I've heard from smokers is that generally you need to change enough of your life to become a complete hermit. All the normal things you do that allow you to take a quick smoke break need to be changed.

And probably most importantly, just practice taking a few minutes off outside without a cigarette and try to wean yourself off. Sometimes you just need the break and not the smoke.

Fixed that for you.

If you must have something for your oral fixation and can't have sex, gum works pretty well on a gum break.

Cygnet I don't know if you forgot but unmarried sex is a sin that leads to abortions and unmarried pregnancies and puts those who pollute themselves with it outside of God's love. Here this young man is trying to put aside empty pleasures and here you are coaxing him into another one that's even more unhealthy and dangerous than the one he's trying to quit! Maybe your if-it-feels-good-do-it liberalism says it's okay to tell a young man to do anything he likes and forget about things like consequences, but I think the rest of us can agree that Meth is the healthy and moral solution to this young man's dilemmas.

Personally, I suggest that you continue smoking, as the company revenues and taxes from cigarette sales are a major part of the economic survival of a number of southern states, which is something that needs all the help it can get in today's global financial crisis.

I mean, quitting would just be selfish and harmful to you and everyone around you in the long run.

They have an entire category of these. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WikiTropes)

And then there's another category on meta-concepts.

Also, I recommend bar fights.

Nothing gets you off nicotine faster than a good ol' bar fight.

Oh my god the trope of TV Tropes has a Trope on itself. The resulting meta will loop and feedback causing destruction on a global scale.

And I will remain blissfully oblivious to this.

If you must have something for your oral fixation and can't have sex, gum works pretty well on a gum break.

Maybe I should hand my "V" card over to some lovely stupid thing and then dump it. Liking people might not be characteristic of me, but attracting people without even caring to... is.

Try learning an instrument (Guitar?), or martial arts.
If you have a nice lady by your side, try dancing!

I can take up karaoke again... and can dance with a broom as an alternative. Screw what people say. They already think I'm an emo bi-polar schizoid, anyway.

I could hold to my new Centrist Party beliefs and just smoke less...

Nothing gets you off nicotine faster than a good ol' bar fight.

Nope. The topic is now about dead horses, and how to beat them, as well as how Damaged doesn't call the morning after.

Honestly you made it into a joke. I just used one tvtropes link (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showpost.php?p=892283&postcount=39) to illustrate a point I was making and you responded like a vampire who got shown a cross.

Fifthfiend

Yes! And then you referenced that in this thread in a quite hilarious and cleverly-mocking-of-myself way! And then Damaged took that and overextended it in what I felt was a rather unfunny way that tossed out the context of the previous remark in favor of sort of generalized slapdash linking to no particular point or purpose. And then I expressed my feelings about that, via the medium of a defaced Penny-Arcade comic.

And now you know... the rest of the story!

G'day!

Speaking of overcoming addiction, can someone offer me guidance to quit Tv Tropes? I kinda started dosing myself on it while recovering from my WoW addiction...

I used to be a YouTube junkie. Not allowing my cursor to roll over hyperlinks is how I cope. And... I guess I started smoking. :sweatdrop

Dude

the key to smoking is realizing that nicotine stays in metabolised out of your system in 48 hours. This doesnt matter if you've smoked for 20yrs of 20 minutes. After 48hrs all those cravings and whatever are no longer physical they are all in your head. It doesnt make those any harder to overcome I suppose, but knowing that from a physical standpoint that you arent craving anything does help.

That knowledge was what helped me quit. And I was a terrible smoker. You can ask Shiney how many cigarettes I would chain smoke my way through on his front porch during my visits
