Sonic fighting a dragon (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45227.html)

Sonic fighting some targets (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45225.html)

You can see some Unleashed influence, but other than that... It's just... just...

I think I need to cry...:(

Okay, uh...

I can't help but get angry at how the landscapes are like Prince of Persia's, but instead of mad parkour, it's for Sonic to run and slide all over the place. And agh, that dragon fight was...

Come on Sonic Team, you can do better than that!

I don't know guys, the only thing I thought was wrong about that dragon was that Sonic was standing still the entire time.

I mean speed is his game, right? In the time it takes that dragon to attack he probably would've been able to run up one of its legs, across its back and neck, and chop that horn off or something.

... okay, so maybe Sonic standing still instead of doing something amazing is a pretty big no, but...

Au contraire, the first image released was a teaser image of a glowing sword, saying more info would be released next issue. Expectations of the next issue (and, by extension, the game) were that it would be Kingdom Hearts 3, which was something the caption HEAVILY hinted at.

So yeah, expectations dropped pretty damn sharply between the teaser and the first image, meaning that the Sonic Cycle applies here.

EDIT: And oh, man, who the hell thought that Dragon fight would have looked exciting?

It looked like he was constantly trying to walk through an invisible wall, and that limited his movement from side-to-side.

How is that a bad thing? How does the first boss being a mook make the entire game bad?

EDIT: Ok, my reading:

Dragon: I saw that with the sound off and this is the dialogue that popped in my head

Sonic: Haa! I kill you from this safe distance!
Dragon: *waves his head from side to side* Hello...? Is anyone there? Heloooo?
Sonic: *slash slash slash*
Dragon: *Still waving* He-hello? Is anyone there? I can hear you but i cant see you... billy? Is that you billy!?

As an aside, growing up in a rural area did not even leave me with the illusion of that fate for my poor, poor dog. Just to depress you all.

I don't understand Sega/Sonic Team. It seems like when another studio releases a couple of bad games in a series, they go, "Okay, we'll take three years on the next one, really come up with something good, and blow everyone's minds," but these people just keep releasing the same game with really horrible gameplay. What gives? Are they pressured from above to release a game every six months/year or is it their own laziness?

Basically, by sticking Sonic in it, they are usually guaranteed sales to the little kids group, so they don't need to work hard. It does look like they try to please the old fanbase every once in a while, but always end up ruining it with one thing or another.

That said, chiming in again that Secret Rings was like the Sonic levels of SA2, except that it didn't glitch you into space or to the center of the Earth once you reach a certain speed, and it had shitty controls. This game seems to address the negative there and leaves the positive. Again, to me, this looks far, far better than Unleashed, which is to say that it looks fun.

Boss fights in Sonic (excepting final bosses*) have always been a joke. This is why I'm hand waving complaints about a crappy dragon fight.

*Oh, man, Doomday zone. You all know what I'm talking about. And, for those of you who played Secret Rings, you remember Erazor Djinn. It was like Final Hazard but more awesome. There are some very small reasons why people still get excited like idiots over new Sonic games.

The crappy dragon fight is stupid because it is exactly the same crap Sega's been doing wrong; they're trying to take Sonic the Extremely Quick Erinaceinae Mammal and fit him into other forms like fantasy knight and werewolf.

If you seriously are going to tell me the only boss fight Sonic could have is one where he runs into an invisible wall whacking a rock-stupid dragon in the face with a sword I have this bridge I think you would be interested in.

But, like, nobody wants to see Invisible Walls anymore. This is next gen - I think we have enough processing power to just put some shit in place of where you can't go, or maybe get rid of the dragon boss fight?

Because seriously when we think 'Sonic boss fight' I'd just love to see Dr. Robotnik (Fuck Eggman, it's a stupid name and isn't as cool as Robotnik) in a giant machine on wheels that's moving backwards on like, a highway or something, at incredible speeds and throwing mines at you. Using your "Break" ability you can boost up fast enough to get to him and Spin attack. Hit Robotnik five times and he runs away in his flying machine, while the rest of it explodes.

And, on our next fight, he's on the water and you have to shift in the five or so 'lanes' to be able to run on the water because rapids deal damage and you lose momentum!

I don't think 'hey awesome maybe we can whack a brick-stupid dragon with a sword.

Also, there were tentacles to avoid. But, I guess that can't be any good, despite being what you described and more, simply because Robotnik wasn't inside the monster?

Am I the only one who played Secret Rings? Is that why I'm the only one with any faith in a made-for-Wii Sonic game? I mean, geeze, you did go really fast in Secret Rings! They are already and are always doing that *points at unleased* Plus the sonic story book (Wii) series isn't even cannon so why do you care? They are just abounch of games about ancient fairy tales/folk lores that star sonic characters. A robot in the mid evil age would be a we bit strange unless time travel is involved. I know I wasn't.Should I have to explain why I'm basing my assumptions for an upcoming game based on another game in, not just the same series, but the same sub-series? I just bring it up because, like I've said a bunch of times in this thread, wait, no, bullet points.

Secret Rings did a lot of things right, and would be an excellent game were it not for the controls.
Black Knight is Secret Rings without abysmal controls.

So, if we take a good game and take out the bad parts, what do we get? Something at least worth some consideration beyond the first boss and the tutorial?

Again, I don't know. If you need Robotnik or whatever, that's fine. You're not missing much ignoring these games. I just thought I'd add something beside "invisible walls" and "Sonic Team is dead."

Edit: Let me address that second point. See, you described a boss in it as an ideal for the series. You just didn't know that boss existed. I thought I'd let you know that your ideal boss fight existed, just with crappy controls.

Right, done.

... even among the canon games Sonic sucks. You'd think they'd at least try to make a quality product every 2 or 3 years, but that never happens. They still have the chance to shape this game up, even if they want to make a corny tie to a fairy tale.

Hell, if Goldeneye (a move tie-in) was one of the greatest shooters of its generation (and had a LOT going against it), why something where you have more creative freedom sucks? Because you're not even trying.

=/ The new games really aren't that bad, people just dun like change. Never played the Wii games but I gotta say, Unleashed was ok aside from Chip... God I hate Chip. At the same time, there is no point bitching about new characters. They live in a world, a lot of people in a world. 2006 wasn't too bad, it was just kinda cliche and the difficulty was too high because the controls were TOO responsive. That said, the ending was annoying. "You played all the way through to find out none of this ever happened! =D"

Kim
02-11-2009, 09:48 PM
Actually, the controls are what we in the biz like to call shitty. I can handle difficulty, that's just a matter of getting better, I can't handle shitty controls. Also, adding a new character to the franchise every game, and every new character being an annoying pain in the ass, is unnecessary and retarded. It has nothing to do with not liking change, it has to do with not liking bad games, which is what they are. Unleashed was a mixed bag. I was one of its biggest defenders, but in the end, they did so many things wrong that the awesome day levels don't make up for. Werehog, Chip, and crappy God of War ripping off. If it could have been nothing but day levels and not had the goddamn idiotic token system, I would've adored it. But it wasn't, so I shant.

Dear Team Sonic:

The following is how to integrate Sonic the Hedgehog into the 3d environment. First, you start with a flat ground. Next you add hills, mountains, canyons, and rivers to start making natural boundaries. Then you had loops, ziplines, springs, bouncers, tunnels and other things to connect various disconnected area of the environment. Then, you add some robotic enemies placed in locations and with actions specially used to disrupt a player traveling at high speed between these locations.

In the final stage, to use a few final obstacles to change the area so that there is one obvious start, one obvious exit, but multiple paths from any one point to another. You add rings and a boss at the end. You set sonic free and let the game be fun and simple.

On the bizarre chance you MUST use a dragon as a boss instead of Dr. Robotnik (because in case you have forgotten his named is DOCTOR FREAKIN ROBOTNIK), the dragon fight should go as follows. You run around on the dragons back. It undulates its body and moves around trying to knock you off. If it knocks you off, you take a hit and lose your rings. You have maneuver through its twitching attacks and use every chance you get to jump on its head.

Feel free to use this idea.

With Love,
Paul

P.S. If this advice comes about 6 or 7 years too late, I apologize.

How about this? We let Sonic die. Then we petition PlatinumGames, the company making MadWorld and made up of people from Clover Studios, to make a fun, stylish game in the spirit of the old Sonic games. Then we achieve world peace, because this scenario exists only in a perfect world of happiness and joy, whereas we live in a world of werehogs and annoying sidekicks who aren't Tales.

You know what I think 3D sonic controls need?

A speed control button.

Like, remember Assassin's Creed, how you just walked and did passive actions until you held a button? Maybe take that so Sonic kinda walks or jogs at a controllable speed, but when you hold down the button he goes really really fast. That way you don't have to deal with the issue of "Help, I can't walk around this robot because I AM TOO FAST and KEEP HITTING WALLS".

Other than that, I suggest the Sonic Team start putting some fucking effort into their games.

As you can see, the dragon is not a boss. It is a stage enemy, furthermore, it is a stage enemy that can be defeated with a only several blows to the horn. What's more, the dragon is a stage enemy at the end of the TUTORIAL STAGE.

It's also worth mentioning that when sonic meets a powerful enemy in this game, he enters a fighting stance where he can block, parry and attack the enemy or, if they so choose, jump over it and continue running. As Sonic is incapable of jumping over the dragon to avoid it, being that it is very large STAGE ENEMY, it appears as though he's hitting an invisible wall when he's merely in fighting stance mode.

So for all the hysterics in this topic who didn't read all that, I'll reiterate:

The dragon is a STAGE ENEMY who can be defeated with SEVERAL BLOWS to the horn at the end of the TUTORIAL STAGE.

Cause holding still and going slashy slash is what Sonic is all about.I'm still confused about this. Sonic used to cut through people and robots with his razor sharp hair while he spun around at high speeds. Why on earth does he need a sword? I'm not to vindicate the style of quick combat, although from what I've seen from videos the enemies that require Sonic to stop can be defeated in several quick slashes or merely jumped over if you want to avoid them ala classic Sonic enemies.

I merely wanted to correct the perceived notion that stage enemy for a tutorial stage, albeit a very big stage enemy, was supposed to be some kind of challenging boss.

For that sort of thing, I've seen screenshots of a Golden dragon boss Sonic runs after and pursues ala nearly every boss in Secret Rings or Eggman bosses in Sonic Unleashed.

...

And yeah, I said Eggman. Which was his name in Japan long before he was renamed Robotnik over here by Sega of America. You know, the same geniuses who called Amy "Sally" in Sonic CD and used all that crap about Mobius from the comics and TV series which convoluted everything until Sonic Adventure came out and made it explicitly clear the games were set on fictional Earth.

Besides, even though they've started calling him Eggman in the English games now, Ivo Robotnik is still his real name while Eggman is his nickname. So seriously, call him whatever the crap you want, its not like anything has changed in that respect.

But man, think about all the animation a dragon needs! Too much work.

i 100% know what you're saying... but this just shows how they are getting lazy with sonic.

You could have sonic running over a huge long wooden brigde at "sonic speed" and have this huge (shadow of the colossus huge) Dragon flying by. (basicly it only needs some simple flying animations...) everynow and then, the dragon swoops down, sideways, trashing the bridge and you need to jump out of it's way and go "bonk" on it's head.

Then, later on, the dragon flies above sonic and goes with the Fire Breath below. So sonic needs to jump over the flaming parts of the bridge while hitting the dragon's belly.

Finally, the dragon goes ahead, turns and comes head first towards sonic. Sonic needs to jump over the dragon, hitting it's head, and run across it.

have the play Do each of these, twice, and you have a fantastic Boss fight for a 3d sonic game...

I'll forgive every mistake Sonic Team has ever made, if they blend Shadow of the Colossus with Sonic running and make a "Sonic and the Elder Gods" game. Sonic versus Cthulhu is just one of those ideas you can't argue with.

i 100% know what you're saying... but this just shows how they are getting lazy with sonic.

Goddamnit you two, go get hired by Sonic Team already.

I don't know how well it'd work, but I've also wanted to see if 3D Sonic games would play better if the controls worked similar to those for racing games, but with a jump button. I think there'd have to be a little tweaking, but I would at least want to see it done.

No, it's that current Sonic games are other games with Sonic thrown in. Sonic games are about running really fast and dodging obstacles and fighting enemies at high speeds. I mean, I could accept these games if they were actually good, but they're not.

And there's no excuse since Nintendo can continuously make Mario fun and innovative and even the games where it's just Mario and friends are fairly decent.

Of note: Mario Strikers is soccer with Mario and random items. It's a game made of fun. Sonic Riders is racing with Sonic and flying snowboards. It's also a pretty good game. Sonic and Mario in the Olympic Games is...Exactly what it says it is. It's not so bad, either. But I'd like to remind all of you that the main Mario series has nowhere to progress now. It already had a IN SPAAAAAAAACE game, there's nothing after SPAAAAAAAACE.

Believe you me, Mario will travel through time any game now.

Like, yeah, it's totally Link's thing, but time is where you go after space. Everybody knows that.

Mario already traveled through time. Remember Mario & Luigi Partners in Time? Yeah.

Hmm... Pokémon did both space and time already and at the same time. Where will Pokémon go now? I mean, you can capture GodArceus already. How about Link? Will the next Zelda game involve space? Does that mean the next Metroid game will be a steampunk game? Oh god this is getting weird. And awesome. Very awesome.

But more on topic: Sonic always has his super Sonic form in the main series, except in Sonic and the Secret Rings ( where he has something...different ) and I'm not sure about 2006...But on Unleashed the emeralds were depowered in the start, so what will he do in this?

Mario has already traveled through time. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

What he needs is a submarine combat game. That's new and exciting, right?

I'm still confused about this. Sonic used to cut through people and robots with his razor sharp hair while he spun around at high speeds. Why on earth does he need a sword?
I could actually buy this assuming the sword's some legendary/magic/both artifact that has much greater cutting power than his own spines and the enemies are somehow much harder and tougher than Eggman's robots agian somehow. Magic is the best bet, yet again. They're in King Arthur so it's not that far a stretch this time around.

But even so he should intigrate the sword into his own style, not go into a completely new and relatively innefective combat style. You don't need to stop and swordfight Sonic! A spindash with a sword is a sword slice at mach something. A homing attack + sword is a homing attack with a better reach and maybe power. I don't mind Sonic with a sword as long as it is, infact, SONIC with a sword.

Him stopping and swordfighting is not Sonic with a sword. It's a blue hedgehog with a sword. Difference. Big.

Every time I see somebody refer to him as Eggman I feel like grabbing the nearest innocent person/animal/object and just pummeling it. His name is Robotnik. Get it right. Even SEGA couldn't get his name right.

Robotnik sounds a lot cooler than Eggman for so many reasons. I don't care if Eggman was his name in Japan, I want Robotnik back! I don't care if he's still technically Robotnik, as long as they call him Eggman, I'll never forgive them.

^ That's stupid. They already do refer to him as Dr. Robotnik on a regular basis, especially when Shadow's whole backstory thing is concerned, what with calling Ivo's grandfather Dr. Gerald Robotnik and his cousin Maria Robotnik. His name is Robotnik and the newer games consistently make you very much aware of this.

Are you so emotionally needy that you need him to be called Dr. Robotnik every time you see him to reassure your fragile psyche?

The name's Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Get over it.

Kim

No.

I hear every member of his family but him getting called Robotnik. I always hear, "Eggman!" "Eggman did this!" "Eggman did that!"

Why do I want the name Robotnik so bad? It's a number of things. On the one hand, it's nostalgia. When I play a Sonic game, not only do I want it to be a good game, but since it is an icon from my childhood, I want it to appeal to that nostalgia.

Secondly, Eggman just sounds dumb. It's a retarded name, no two ways about it. Why is Robotnik better? Well, it actually has to do with robots. Secondly, Ivo Robotnik is much more fitting. It sounds like the name of a power hungry Russian scientist gone mad.

Lastly, I hate having to call him Eggman when talking about the new games, and go to Robotnik when talking about the old ones when it's the same damn guy and the old name was better.

It's not a major complaint, but it does bother me, and outright insulting me for not liking what he's named since the Dreamcast days is rude and uncalled for.

Meister

Yeah pretty much that. Although not necessarily "insulting for not liking what he's named since the Dreamcast" as much as "insulting over a name in a video game that, by common knowledge, is the result of different translations." Subzero, that's not how we roll.

Anyway looking at the post count we're pretty much done here, aren't we?

Would people still care about these games if they didn't remember them from when they were on the Genesis and good?

Sonic is serious business, apparently.
