View Full Version : Metal Gear is Awesome and you know it

As the "seil likes video games" thread kind of went on a Metal Gear tangent, and I am currently obsessed with Metal Gear Solid, I figure a general thread about the awesomeness that is Metal Gear would be appropriate. Also, please remember to use spoiler tags as not everyone has played every game in the series.
So what's your favorite game in the series? Favorite boss fight? Favorite character? What would you like to see in the future of the series? etc etc etc.
Personally right now my favorite remains to be the first Metal Gear Solid. I swear in a span of a couple weeks I beat it at least three times. It's such a great game. I would really love to get my hands on the remake of it with the improved game mechanics.
Metal Gear Solid 2 was really fun too, my favorite part has to be the Tanker part with Snake. Raiden was alright too, and it was kind of neat to see Snake from a not-playing-as-him perspective.
Currently playing Metal Gear Solid 3 and I am generally enjoying it so far. Not very far yet. I think I'm about ready to go squash some bees or something.
And I very much desire to play Metal Gear Solid 4. I've read some stuff about it and it sounds like it is excellent. Unfortunately as it's pretty much never going to come out on the 360, and I don't have any intention on buying a PS3 (I don't even have a 360 either so...) so the likelyhood of my playing is not looking good. D=
EDIT: Oh yes, and I think my favorite boss fight ever has to be the fight with the Hind in the first game. I love it, and I don't know why.
So yeah, Metal Gear! Talk about it!

I'm going to reinforce my earlier point and say that MGS3 is my favorite and CJ, after you see a bit more of her Eva's whole

thing fits perfectly with her personality.
Favorite part of MGS3 - the absolutely revolutionary The End fight, as well as the fight with The Boss at the end. The surge of music, the flowers, and Boss' just being hardcore badass solidified it.

I've not played the original MGS, only Twin Snakes. Most people were complaining about Snake doing backflips in the cutscenes. So the already cheesy cutscenes were... cheesier? To be quite frank, if people don't like the cheesy moments (of which there are plenty) they shouldn't be playing anyways, and you have to be patient enough to withstand the 50% cutscene content. Occasional Edam makes it more bearable from my POV! :)
MGS2 and 3 were still prone to it anyway.
MGS2: "We've managed to avoid drowning!"
MGS3: *EVA unzips at every opportunity*
Fighting 25 Metal Gear RAYs in MGS2 and the MGS3 chase scene remain my favourite fights of the series.

Oh god, and Ocelot's little gun kata while Snake just kind of stands there and watches.
Yeah MGS has always been HARDCORE REALISTIC UBER INTENSE GRITTY WAR ESPIONAGE mixed in with some fucking batshit loco drama queen with Magneto powers, vampires, and other balls-crazy weird stuff.

I played Metal Gear Solid who knows many times when it came out. Especially the first few hours of the game messing with the guards. It was all weird and wonderful!
Mm, boss? Probably Psycho Mantis as he always cracked me up. In fact I really liked the cast in FOX-HOUND in MGS1.
MGS3 I never played but watched my friend play through it which was riveting. It was like watching a film (If a somewhat surrel one...) Mostly I remember THE PAIIIIIN! being said a lot.
Anybody else when reading the above comics hear all the voices in the style of Metal Gear Awesome? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMRgB98j7EI)

I actually was gonna say "Seil Likes Metal Gear Solid And Won't Shut Up About It," but I've been talked to about my habits when posting threads afore, so I decided to make a thread everyone could enjoy.
I really like four - stereotypical, yes, but come on: Shadow Moses, the dream before Shadow Moses, the bosses, the music, the end fight with Liquid Ocelot, the way the end fight was handled, everything. It was just pure awesome. The only thing I couldn't quite figure out was Naomi.
But off four, which I feel is going to be a lot of people's favorite, I have to go with three. At first I was totally put off by the amount of menus and having to patch myself up and this and that - and the camouflage system was weird. But then I actually began to play through it and I got to know it and wow. Was a little frustrating at times, but it had a great story, great characters and great game play.

I remember a friend of mine constantly referring to the Pain and the Fear and the Lame and the Queer.
But yeah, I sat through the first two games like I was at a theater and at times couldn't look away. Only game I know that could do that to me.
[Edit] That whole sniper fight in 3 was made of win.
Four was a great movie... Video game? Not so much... Not to say it was bad, but it was a much better movie than it was a video game.
Favorite boss fight is either Psycho Mantis or... Psycho Mantis. He's my favorite, but I haven't played the third game, so maybe it's bosses would be better.

I have to admit that I watch the second part of Metal Gear Awesome pretty much at least once a day. "Damn right I'm gonna hit that" And I always read those comics. XD This person's "Les Enfants Terribles" comics are quite awesome too. (http://zarla.deviantart.com/art/Les-Enfants-Terribles-38063076)
I always liked Psycho Mantis too. It was always fun to get to him and hear what he was going to say to me that time. I love his voice too.
Also guys, I can do nothing but draw Metal Gear fanart what is wrong with me?

I think either 1 or 3 are my favourites, can't really decide which. 1 probably for the nostalgia, 3 for being so different than the rest of the series. Oh and the bosses, especially The End, but that goes without saying.
Favourite boss fight though? Gota be controlling REX and fighting Liquid in RAY. After 10 years of waiting for that moment, it was the most amazinging thing ever. I even went so far as to make a special save file just for the fight, so I could play it whenever.
Best overall moment in the series though has to be the return to Shadow Moses, again for the nostalgia.

I wouldn't say improved by any means. The controls are like MGS2, but with improved controls, you get crappy camera angels as well.
In MGS1, I could sneak up behind the baddies easy & get a good idea of how to move about. However, in Gamecube MGS1, MGS2 & MGS3, I could never manage to do anything better than crawl on my damn belly the whole damn game. It might have something to do with the camera not showing nearly as much.
MGS4 however, I've no complaints about. Admittedly, the controls are a bit complex, but with the ability to control the camera angle is great. Instead of playing the game with the game designer's predetermined idea of what is a good camera angle, you can manipulate it to your own desire.
Heck, you can even go for the classic MGS1 look.
Story wise, I'd say MGS1 is my favorite, followed by 3, then 4 & MGS2 coming in last.
Sound, Graphics & Controls go to MGS4.
As for the favorite boss? Even though it is a bit of a simplistic fight, I absolutely *LOVE* the Metal Gear Rex Vs Metal Gear Ray battle of MGS4. Hell, all the Boss battles of MGS4 rock.
Except, there isn't anything comparable to the MGS1 Rex, or MGS3 Shag fights. You fight plenty of Gekkos, but they feel like the Rays of MGS2, where strategy doesn't feel all that employed.
SWB
- In terms of play value, MGS4 is up there. In terms of story value, they could have done a lot better. Fer instance, despite the fact that real psychics clearly exist in the MGS universe, in MGS4 everything weird or odd comes 100% nanobots.
Which REALLY pisses me off for the whole Liquid Ocelot explanation. The fact that he's The Sorrow's son has nothing to do with Liquid taking over, and explanation given really sucks.

I really fucking love Metal Gear and I really wish I had a PS3 to play MGS4! The only thing that I do not like about the series is about how BAD the whole story is sometimes, but that badness is what makes the story so compelling and a thrill ride all the way through. My current favorites include MGS1, MGS3, and MGS:Portable Ops. My least favorites include Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Solid 2(while it was revolutionary, Raiden was a puss).

Haha I just got to the part in the 3rd game where they discuss Metal Gear. "The guy in the states who talked about it... what was his name... Emmerson? Henrick? I dunno."
And during the little mini cutscene thing when I made Snake eat a snake once, where it actually showed him chowing down on it? Made me sliiiightly ill.
EDIT: Just got to The End tonight but I had to turn it off for fear it would take too long. Plus something about him scares me. D= I'm not good at spotting stuff in the forest. I've seen him once right before he shot me.

Wasn;t that how you get his gun? Or is it how you get his camo. Cause I love the gun so very much. Especially when sniping the combat helicopters. Not my problem they fall asleep at the controls and crash into a mountain.

You get his Mosin for tranging him. To get his camo you have to hold him up.

"Otacon... I had that dream again."
That one boss fight in MGS4 that most of you have referenced: Fuck yes.
The End fight in MGS3 - don't save during the fight, as The End can jump you once you come back. Paramedic warns you when you save that "Something bad might happen." After playing MGS' through out the ages and knowing that if you tranq bosses instead of killing them there's likely a bonus for doing so, I did so in 3. I wasn't disappointing, but with The End, hold him up.
Tranq him.
I know it makes the fight more difficult but oh my god it's so worth it.
Once you get into the swing of the camouflage thing, it's not too bad. You just have to take your time. Where I went wrong was thinking that the battle was handled on one map. It's on three maps. Also, the directional mic is your friend.

The camo is totally worth it too but I'd rather not force anyone to hold up The End on their first try, because god damn son, is it tough, and I'd rather not make CJ's experience with MGS3 anything less than enjoyable.
Heh. I saved parts I wanted to replay... If only I had done that on MGS4 because goddamn there's epic.
However, like I said, use the directional mic, move slowly - like slowly - and check your map often. Also, a neat little trick is to shoot The End's parrot with your Tranquilizer gun and capture it - it's on the weapons shed northwest corner of the first map. Release it, and it'll fly to The End and say "Grampa!"[/spoiler

Yes, I was waving my gun around randomly in FPS view without noticing him at first and held him up. Then again it had taken me 40 minutes to find him after I had been crawling slowly around at the start of the fight and received a tranq dart in the head despite 60% camo.
The End is a cool and unique fight, yah. Gets a bit tedious crawling around for half an hour looking for him on the 3rd playthrough and onwards, though. :sweatdrop

Not that many of you will necessarily take advantage of this, but Rent-A-Center carries the PS3 (http://www6.rentacenter.com/site/page/pg4313-as513158-ba-pn_Sony_PS3_80GB_01.html). Not sure how much it costs to rent, or if its cost effective.
However, just thought I'd mention it, in case some of you were interested. Plus, I think RAC has a rent-to-own type deal as well.

I thought this thread was about Metal Gear Awesome (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/297383).
But yeah I like it. My favorite in the series is 4 on account of I haven't played it yet. For some reason I'm only ever able to play through an MGS game once and then it sits and collects dust together with its expansion like a 120 dollar doorstop and that makes me frustrated. MGS4 is like a magical wonderland of possibility that may one day turn into a 600 dollar doorstop along with the PS3 that I'll be forced to get so I can play it, but not yet. :)

I held up the End on the first go too. It's easy, and having the moss camo makes the rest of the fight easier. Also sneaking up on him means you can stick bombs on his back, or simply wait until his stamina runs down and get an easy tranq kill. Cos there's nothing more annoying in this fight than slowly whittling his health down, then losing track of him and not finding him again before he heals himself back to 100%.

I'm playing Metal Gear Solid 2 now, and sometimes I don't think I'm made out for this stealth stuff.
I'll sneak up behind a guy, gun ready to hold him up and get some dogtags for my collection, and BAM!
The gods of Stealth are so displeased by me that the f'er turns around, or my shot misses by an inch and he sees me, or he only LOOKED unconcious after I knocked him out.
To get the point around best, was that I had to save and quit, but I still wanted to see what was ahead before I shut the PS3 off, and therefore pulled out my AK and just went on a KILLING SPREE. I was unharmed.
If I had done it the stealthy way, I know I would have ended up hurt in someway, because some jerk decided he could hear my silenced pistol or some lard ass I'm trying to stow away takes forever to pick up.
I am at least learning the art of foresight, as I defeated Fat Man with some well paced mines and explosives, ironic no?

Alright either I suck or I found the three luckiest guys in the world. All I remember was crawling towards him slowly, creeping up behind him, and suddenly he sets off a flashbang and darts away like he's got a propeller in his ass.
If he does that, Thermal Goggles - you can see his footsteps. That being said, I held him up a bunch and didn't get no camo.

That fight really was an excellent section though. I vividly remember crawling across the entire area and listening for breathing with the directional microphone; then getting up to that waterfall, hiding in the grass to get a good look at the area and happening to glance over to the other side of the brook and realizing The End was right there and hadn't noticed me, then inching over to hold him up; eventually getting caught by him, returning to the sniping grounds and realizing that a) his almost-empty stamina bar hadn't refilled and b) he was kneeling right in front of me looking in the other direction.
Point being it more than made up for that atrocity of a boss fight I had with The Fear. Fuck you and fuck your camo I'ma cap your ass, bitch.

HECK YEAH.
I didn't hold him up but I had a sniping battle with him.... WITH MY TRANQUILIZER GUN. There was one time I walked into a clearing and he was, like, walking around right in front of me, but he got away all of the other times all I could see of him was the glint of his scope and I tranquilized him to death. I feel accomplished.

Oh man, The End was a crazy boss bottle. It was do-able but it just took sooooo unbelievably long to beat. Mis dos (2) centavos:
Metal Gear is fun.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is fun.
Metal Gear Solid is a really thrilling ride with a b-action movie plot about nukes and awesome.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is an amazing experience even if the last third or so of the game is deliberately obnoxious.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is Kojima taking crazy pills and coming out with a masterpiece of a game.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is fun although it gets too retconny for my tastes.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is Kojima cocksucking his fans with the grandest of impetus and failing at delivering any kind of pleasant feelings.
This thread leads me to believe I'd better play MGS3.

I didn't really enjoy the fight against The End.
I dunno, maybe it had to do with the fact that when he was asleep, he wouldn't fucking shoot me, so I spent like 2 hours walking around hoping I'd bump into him. Then I did, and he dropped a flashbang, and then I just chased him with a machine gun for a while.
So, the "epic sniper battle" involved no sniping at all. I'm not even sure if I had one by that point.

I didn't really like MGS3. It tried to do too much, and had too many lengthy cutscenes. I'm not even going to bother attempting MGS4 (even if I do get a PS3). The cutscenes are really nice and all, but damn are they ever long, and that kind of experience just doesn't do it for me, or rather, I get everything I would get out of playing the game by watching the cutscenes on Youtube. I think I liked the actual gameplay in MGS2 best. I've always preferred Tenchu 1-3 though. Much much simpler gameplay.

Regarding that button-mashing no-using-turbo scene in MGS1, I've only done it once(as far as taking that path in the game), but I think I actually prefer letting Meryl die. The ending seems a lot more meaningful when Snake gets all sad and Otacon snaps him out of it. Plus Meryl's voice during the final car chase grates my nerves like none other. I'm just a cruel person.
Also, I have terrible luck interrogating people in MGS3, I always end up punching them or slitting their throats. Dang pressure sensitivity.

The fact that you could starve your enemies and then feed them poisoned food in MGS3 was endlessly amusing to me. Also, unlocking the stealth camo and sniping people in various body parts, planting dynamite on their asses, holding them up in a crowded room, and running around as Raikov randomly punching people and getting away with it were also enjoyable. Well, until you got caught (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9Df6uoPrs0).
MGS3's Sorrow boss fight was also massively fun after said murder spree. "I'm useless now!", "You ate me!", "My neck!", "It burns!" :D

That was also awesome.
On the subject of exploding, the Fear didn't even look like he was dieing. He just dangled there, gorgonzola yelled "The fear!" a bit, and wiggled his tongue at Snake. Then exploded.

gorgonzola
GORGONZOLA
I'm having a difficult time deciding how that possibly works in that sentence.
Like, it's a type of cheese, right? Cheese. How can you cheese-yell?
But yes, the exploding bosses were pretty funny sometimes. "I'm covered in bees! *BOOM*"

Fun thing: Try to play MGS3:Subsistence online. With The Fury. Watch as your teammates bitch at you whenever you try to kill someone indoors.

It's the difference between sounding genuinely scared, as per his name, or as portrayed in-game, sounding like he was... er... *insert innuendo*
Especially with that forked tongue wiggling.
Eugh.

Jeez man that was a burn the Fury would have approved of.

Hey let's talk about how David Hayter's acting is pretty horrible. Every time Snake grunts anything with his sarcasm quotes angry voice I get the urge to punch him in the stomach just to get him to express some genuine emotion and stop fucking suspension of disbelief like a three dollar hooker.
Um, that's all I've got.

But it makes for great parody material. I mean, look at Crab Battle; loved that.

I can actually pull of a Decent Hayter voice, but I lose focus on it unless I'm saying things like "METAL GEARRRR-*breathy exhale*"
He tends to breath alot, and when he butchers words, it's noticeable.
Colonel: Snake, do you know who this is?
Snake: Is that Malio?
Also Solid Snake, sorry about beating you up just now to get your Dog Tag. I just needed one more to get the secrets, and had been running around naked for along time while Colonel was talking crazy talk and some Asian chick was showing up on the codec, so I was in a bad mood when you showed up with my stuff.

I'd just like to mention that every single I've glanced at the title of this thread, the wording makes me think of annoying fanfic loving fangirls that I knew in real life, being jovial about the most inane crap. I'm not quite sure why.
That said, I haven't played MGS but I've heard a lot of good things. This thread more or less convinced me to check it out during my break.

I actually think David Hayter does a pretty good job really. I never have noticed any terrible moments at least. He sounds like Snake would sound to me.
I have to say, compared to Snake and Raiden's torture scenes, Big Boss' is downright nasty. I wasn't able to watch it all, but the part I did see was pretty bad. (It's not because I COULDN'T watch it, but I agreed to give up the TV about then and I didn't want to get too far into a long cutscene)

It's because I started the thread, isn't it? :sweatdrop

Eh? *looks at the first page*
Oh... Not sure, because you never fit the quality of "annoying" and "jovial about inane crap" whenever I talked to you.

Hopefully not!
Also, I have to hand it to Big Boss about keeping his cool after getting his crotch grabbed by Volgin. And I guess I should give Volgin some props for being able to recognise one man from another just from grabbing his crotch...

No, I think it was fairly easy to notice a difference between Volgin and Snake at the crotch level.

Oh come on! Do I halfta pull up my "What's Your Opinion On David Hayter's Voice Acting" thread? Do I have to pull up my arguments with Ken from one of the numerous SSBB threads?
That being said, I listened to the original Japanese voices in 4 but with English subs.
EDIT Screw it.
Because I was doing something completely different for "The Best Of NPF" thread, this popped up. (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showthread.php?t=24555) And I'll throw this one in just 'cause I have the link just 'cause Ryu repped me for my arguments. (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showthread.php?t=21449) That there second link you'll have to read a bit through - the argument is on the first few pages.

Considering MGS3: Subsistence Online has been discontinued, try is pretty much all they can do. If you want to play Metal Gear Online, you need a PS3 & the MGS4 version of MGO.
