View Full Version : Warbot_001: Don't forget to press 9!

I know, I know. Only mods allowed to make new comic threads. Go ahead and ban me. However, there is not yet an official Warbot in Accounting sub-forum, and almost 2 hours after update only Brian seems to be online, but his focus has been on the new site rather than starting a thread.

I figured that those heathens with "normal" sleep schedules may want a specific place to discuss Warbot, as well as Brian and Zack being able to get some feedback.

So, at risk of Fifth and Meister raining death upon me with their super mod powers (did I mention I think you guys are great?), I'll open discussion.

------------------------

I love how Brian instantly implements his theme of a robot who happens to be an accountant. Almost everybody has that same problem with a fax or office phone the first time they use them, and every time I just wanted to smash the thing to bits.

I was disappointed at first as I was expecting color, but that's just because of the preview concept art we had seen when the idea was first brought to us. Should have known better. Still, I like the art style. The grey shades throw me off a little, particularly in the more detailed areas of the art. Still, I love it and eagerly await the next strip.

Warbot's just became my favourite webcomic.

For a first comic of a new series, i think it was quite the great start!

Just so we're clear, Warbot dosen't speak?

Zack Finfrock
04-01-2009, 01:43 AM
As far as I know he doesn't, but I'm only the artist/co-creator. So what do I know?

I can hear Brian now. "You know nothing. Ugly."

Wouldn't even have thought of this but you had to go ahead and mention it. GET THE FUCK OUT

nah, I think we can give it a shot with Warbot threads. If we end up getting three new comic threads with every update like we used to with 8BT, we'll extend that rule to this subforum.

I should talk about the comic. The comic is amazing and I'll continue to read it.

Sort of.

While I did find this strip pretty damned funny, I worry that the gag won't last.

I don't wanna know about anything coming out of Ann Coulter. Unless she's a Warbot. And while there are theories, they're yet unproven.

Intriguing. So far this seems like such a one-note joke, it'll be exciting to see what you can do with it.

Or if it ends up being just one page, at least it's funnier than the ill-fated Mother of All Bombs. . . anyone remember that comic?

This might be due to the resemblance, but during all those panels of Warbot waiting/ trying to figure out how to send the fax, I was imagining him as having this low, steady hum, like a huge refrigerator.

I'll have to wait and see where this one goes, but it looks like it could be really good.

I keep having scenes from the comic which haven't happened yet, almost certainly never will and include characters who probably don't exist play out in my imagination. I guess that's either an amazing subconscious compliment or I'm having a psychotic break.

See, at my job, you have to press "8" in order to send a fax. I forgot the first time, myself. I hate faxes. They are evil. You always have to run around to at least 3 machines before you find one that works, only to find out that the machine you're trying to send to is down, and have to start phone tag with that office for the rest of the day. Yeah, I love faxing.

Kaneda
04-01-2009, 09:46 PM
When I first read it, while I liked it, I wasn't particularly impressed. But each time I read it again it grew more and more amusing. Just his design is inherently amusing, that you so deliberately created him to be as unsuited for an office environment and possible, and then he tries to cover that up with a little tie. I definitely look forward to further strips.

Mirai Gen
04-01-2009, 10:12 PM
I have to say that I originally thought Warbot was going to talk, through his big gaping metal jaw, and the fact that he doesn't makes it even funnier that he got the job.

The first time I read it I giggled a bit.
The second time I read it, I had to suppress laugher.
The third time I read it I almost vomited up my diaphragm.
He stands there for three and a half hours before he tries to put the papers in the fax.
Then he smashes the thing trying to press "9"
Why do I find this so damn funny?

Kim
04-02-2009, 06:19 AM
I think the funnier thing was that I don't think he was trying to press "9" so much as just lost his temper, which is funny for a robot. Plus, I could practically hear him yelling, "Dammit!"

Kurosen
04-02-2009, 08:01 AM
To me he is only pressing 9, but that destroys the FAX machine because he's so ill-fitted for office work. I was worried it would look too much like he smashed it in anger, but really, it's funny either way you take it.

Si Civa
04-02-2009, 08:29 AM
So how did he got the job in the beginning?
Did the company just want old war veteran or are they, like most of your characters, complete idiots?

Magic_Marker
04-02-2009, 09:13 AM
I think it's funny to imagine that he's not offically employed there but just shows up. I mean, do you want to be the one to tell him to leave? Do you want to be the security team to escort him off the premises?

Kim

For some reason it didn't occur to me reading it that Warbot is really an emotionless robot that just mindlessly follows orders. Having robots that are actually robots is so rarely done it skipped my mind entirely.

Kurosen
04-02-2009, 09:30 AM

04-02-2009, 10:50 AM
So how did he got the job in the beginning?

Because you don't say "no" to a warbot.

I mean, look, if a nuclear warhead came into your office and asked for a job, would you say no?
I think it's funny to imagine that he's not offically employed there but just shows up.
This is an awesome alternative. Looking at it that way, it's like the tie is a vague attempt to fit in. Like he's trying to infiltrate an office using the worst disguise ever.

Magic_Marker
04-02-2009, 11:17 AM
Like he's trying to infiltrate an office using the worst disguise ever.

And it's even funnier because it works, well, apparently.

[edit] I keep looking at the fax machine and wondering if anybody else needed to use it that day.

malaguy
04-02-2009, 11:45 AM
Hehehe, I loved the comic. I already feel very sorry for Watbot. I read the character as a robot who only wants to do the best he can, in order to help out the other people in the office. Like he doesn't want to disappoint anybody in the office.

Anyways, besides the "punchline," the part I found funniest was that it took him around 3.5 hours to figure out how to "use" the fax machine. Silly dedicated robot.

Phylyn51

Awsome comic! keep this one up. As a cube-zombie myself, office humor is always good.

Kim
04-02-2009, 12:02 PM
I think one of the funnier things is how oblivious he is to how terrible he is at his job. He just kind of drops the papers all crumpled up on the fax machine and then smashes it trying to use it, and he isn't even aware that he's done any part of the faxing process wrong.*

*Assuming I'm interpreting it correctly.

Zack Finfrock

Yes and no. There is an overall history to this world and time will move forward, but we're not necessarily seeing things in the order they occur. We're more interested in capturing moments along the arc than the curve itself.

Because you don't say "no" to a warbot.

Even if you have a manager who hired him with happy ignorance of the fact that he's a giant war mech, the fact that every other employee is happily unaware of the fact makes it even funnier.
