Just another example that the best characters to kill are those who you can without destroying the main story, but that no one wants you to. DaveSprite and Bro fit that bill exactly it seems. I'm surprised Hussie did it, but he did it well and with style. That leaves me even more impressed with this story.
I'm expecting at least one of the four main characters to die before this is through, but perhaps that's just the pessimist in me.

But yeah they are dead, at least one for sure. CAL is a puppet and thus follows whoever has a hand in him. And Karkat as usual has no idea what he is talking about beyond the very basic. About time to move on, there are predestined failures to proceed upon.
Don't think one of the mains will die(twice) though. Just don't see the meaning unless he plans to end this in tragedy.

Which makes me think even more that the mains won't die because in most cases when they do it is a doomed timeline isn't it?
POS Industries
11-29-2010, 04:01 PM
Well, it's reasonable to assume that none of them die (permanently) up to the point that they open the rift and enter the trolls' session, since the trolls can see all of their whereabouts from any point before then and there's been no allusion to it. Furthermore, Dave had been time skipping around up to and back from that point multiple times to manipulate the LOHAC economy, and he inferred that none of them had been killed, either. Obviously he's still alive, we've already seen that John is, and Rose and Jade are alive in the future being "crazy" and "crazier," respectively.
What happens post-scratch, though, is anyone's guess.

Bro is dead. He's not here anymore. But on our backs, and in our hearts...
HE LIVES ON IN US!
Edit: Anyway, I think what happened here may be what piqued Vriska's interest in John in the first place. Remember, her big thing is that she likes high stakes games.
Also may explain exactly why she put him to sleep, and why she looked pissed off (because he failed to meet her initial expectation, by trying to prototype something dumb).

Not that it actually matters, since the only thing that would be possible to see are his eyes. Each of the kid's authority figure only has one facial characteristic.
As quoted from Homestuck wiki!
* Dad only has a nose, tied to the aromas of smoke and baking, and to John's element of air.
* Mom only has lips, tied to her drinking, and to Rose's element of water. Might also be tied to Rose's verbosity.
* Bro only has eyes (beneath his sunglasses), tied to his voyeuristic websites and to Dave's element of fire (and therefore, light).
* Bec only has ears. How this ties with Jade's element of earth is a bit far-fetched, but he's an oddball of a guardian anyway. A possibility is from the phrase “keeping your ear to the ground.” Or it could just be that ears are the only prominent facial feature left.

Yes, unrelated. "Pyrope" was suggested back when Hussie still had the Suggestion boxes open, and the basis for the suggestion was in all likelihood her glasses.

I know, right? Going for greatness for herself/making sure John is the hero shouldn't be as anger-inducing to folks that don't like her as murdering other trolls for a LARP.
Oh I'm not saying this is worse. I'm saying I'm still pissed off about all that, and it drives me insane that so many people love her in spite of/because of this bizarre need for her to always be the center of attention, which is then granted by her continuing to be a main part of everything. And, of course, knowing that my loathing of her is just falling for the whole 'u mad' troll thing that the fandom loves. It builds up. She got her hand and arm blown off, she got haunted by the souls of those she'd killed, but she never seems to learn from it.
I think what makes me want to punch her is not her actions, but her justifications. The horrible little ways she reasons it out and makes it sound like everyone else is just stupid for not seeing it her way, which is clearly the best.

Oh, I can't forgive her for anything she's done. In fact, I was extremely angry with her when Alterniabound made it clear that she learned nothing from being killed in revenge.
But weird crap keeps happening that makes it impractical for me to hate her full blast 24/7. Which is of course followed by her making me hate her again just about each and every time. For example, here I kind of have to grudgingly admit that her view of the whole predestination thing is refreshingly not defeatist.
And I admit that I'm intrigued as to how she expects to be able to kill Beck Noir.
She's still the most evil person in this entire freaking story, next to, say Jack and some other guys, but I'm being forced to admit that it's just not practical for me to hate her as much as I want to.
At least not all the time.

Eeh...
I'm not really sure how horrible her actions in and of themselves are, really. I mean, yeah, it was a callous, asshole thing to do, but she has a point about the whole 'doomed timeline' thing.
I mean, did she really have much of a choice? She knew what her actions were going to be. She could have rejected that, but only to create a time paradox and/or doomed timeline. She's a terrible person, but if John had been in her place, how would he have acted?
Also, am I the only one who's noticed this:

What's the point of being angry with a scorpion for killing? They can't help it.
Actually I think Vriska's tragedy is that she can't resist hurting people she gets close to. It would make her shunned and feared, at which point trying to make herself the biggest hero of the world (or the biggest hero of the world's sponsor) becomes her only defense against loneliness.

Vriska is awesome, and everyone who says otherwise is delusioned or abuse their free will.
She obviously orchestrates Bro's survival too, whether directly or indirectly, to have an ally for the final fight. Davesprite is still dead, mostly since he functioned as an extra Dave with wings.

I was more going along the lines of time paradoxes, rather than free will, but... nyaaah. Perhaps we'll get some psycho-analysis from Rose later on. That'd be fun. Until then, I'm gonna go on judging her for the decisions she makes, provided they're free decisions.
Edit: No, Drac's right. I just re-read it. She saw he was going to be created, so she decided to go ahead and create him. And while that still leaves the question what would've happened if she hadn't acted the way she did (or whether it was even possible for her to decide differently), she made a choice. She didn't know she was going to make this choice, didn't know it was destined, even if it may well have been! She chose to do this. Ergo, despicable.
In the map, "He is already here" is this act's 'title'. This mantra will be the act's alpha and omega.
Oh, yeah. Didn't see that! Huh. The question is, who is 'he' referring to? Jack? Lord English? Is there a difference? Bluh.

I got a different impression there. I figured that she, knowing that Jack was going to come to their universe, chose to be the one to bring him about. Yes, she was predestined to do that, but I'm not sure if she looked at any such "spoilers" to that effect. She just wanted to be responsible for both the creation and destruction of Beck Noir.

Hm.
Looking back, I seem to have got the code that summons the demon confused with the code that Karkat ran that killed all the Trolls' lusii.
Still, the latter code was said to affect Karkat, his friends, and everyone they ever meet, so I'm going to posit the theory that the Kids' guardians are all going to die. Probably the sprites, too.
Anyway, for the demon-summoning code to execute the Trolls' universe has to die, and that universe is or will be inhabitted by the Felt and the Midnight Crew. Spades Slick said that if Snowman dies then the universe dies. Therefore, Snowman's going to die.

You know, we haven't really thought about WHY Snowman dying would destroy the universe. I don't think it could just be "hello former Black Queen, here is the power of universe exploding."
Maybe she's the lynchpin on a bunch of fucked up time shit. Or something else, but I get the feeling that somehow a bunch of threads have been cleverly woven through her such that when she's undone, the whole thing will come apart.
Just speculating though.
Then again, since we got the line "you've recently come into all the time in the world" (quoting from memory), maybe the offer she got was pretty much "we'll make you immortal by linking your existence to the universe itself."

In her defense, she can only see the kids, and Davesprite stopped being traceable over the Trollian viewport when he prototyped himself, so it's more than likely she had no idea that any of that would happen, or has happened.
Of course, she wouldn't have cared if she could see them, primarily due to her natural bitchy Vriskatude but also due to the fact that none of those events are avoidable, and any attempt to circumvent them would just make things worse since everyone (Bro and Davesprite included) would be doomed in the splinter timeline. Even if the book isn't referring to her world, the snow-theme still makes sense since every world is cursed by the Denizen at the start, so why would they start with a lit Forge when it makes more sense from a game perspective for that Forge to be frozen until the Denizen's curse is lifted.

No, that wasn't a conversation with Feferi. That was the nightmare.
The first bit was jade reliving a past conversation. That's why she kept thinking it was their first conversation, because at the time they had it, it was their first. She's just remembering it now.
But then 'current' knowlege (like Feferi's fish puns and her agreeing not to use her quirk) started leaking in, and the conversation goes off-track. But I'm pretty sure the whole thing is still a dream. I'm not entirely certain if she's actually communicating with Feferi; I doubt it. I think this is all just the horrorterrors giving her nightmares. Said nightmares are realized with the Deadferi.
I think the whole this is memory mixed with nightmare. None of it's actually happening, and I'm pretty sure feferi isn't dead. We don't know what happened with the dream bubbles, but I doubt she managed to get them created yet. Cause this is their first conversation, and they've already had at least one afterwards, which was preceded by the nightmares.
Anyway, that's just my interpretation...

If these imps get first guardian powers, than why didn't the troll imps get the Vast Glub?
Geminex

I don't think they get the full powers. But in one of the troll updates we saw the huge, glub-ified imps. So yeah, they do get some of the powers of the original, just not all of them.

Size does not equal power. Physical and aesthetic changes are confirmed, but true abilities are not necessarily confirmed. The glub makes you bleed from every orifice (if you're a troll) the imps we saw were just huge.
The Queen wasn't a problem because she didn't wear her ring, and the King was presumably waiting for them to reach Skaia before he went all out. But why would the Underlings with the glub just use it and kill all of their enemies off the bat?
BitVyper
12-05-2010, 06:04 PM
but true abilities are not necessarily confirmed.
I'm reasonably certain that it was noted at least twice in the troll arc that prototyping something powerful would and did make the enemies more powerful. Eridan's narration before entering the game said it the most directly, but we also saw it to be the case in the form of an absolutely massive enemy when Nepeta and Equius got together (granted we didn't actually see that thing fight, but there comes a point where size indicates increased power on its own, not to mention all the extra limbs).
No one directly said "this will make them more powerful," but it was both heavily implied and shown to be the case. This would just be confirmation.
Edit: I think for the most part it probably depends somewhat on the level of the individual minion. Pawns and imps probably just get cosplay items. Uber monsters likely receive greater benefits.
Becquerel's prototyping may break some of those rules, of course. I'm guessing they snagged teleportation.
Geminex
12-05-2010, 06:05 PM
Eh, I mis-phrased that. I should have said 'attributes' of the original.
I think with each prototyping the imps change and grow stronger, based on the attributes and power of whatever the sprite got prototyped with. However, while the ring-bearer feels the full brunt of the changes (which was why the king could GLUB), the effect on the imps will be lesser. Dilute.
I'm guessing the glub-imps either just got physical size and strength, or they got a watered-down version of the glub.
The omnipotimps are gonna have powers similar to bec's (or, well, we know they do, we just saw one use them), but in the same way dilute. They'll probably be able to screw with space quite a bit, maybe do some teleporting, whatever else bec could do, but weaker and more limited. Plus, y'know, they'll be stronger. But their increase in power won't come near to matching that of Jack's.
I'm over-explaining stuff here, but only cause I don't quite know where you're coming from.
BitVyper
12-05-2010, 06:50 PM

Time to get back to the pages and pages of not-actually-expository chatlogs that move this motherfucker forward, tiny fraction of an inch by teeth-pullingly prolonged tiny fraction of an inch.
EDIT: My fondest dream is to have some studio option Homestuck as a movie, then have some scriptwriter condense the entire thing into like, two and a half hours that manages to be completely dramatically satisfying and hit all the important plot points, like Scott Pilgrim minus the unappealing lead actor and the weird shit at the end where you can tell they were going to change the ending but didn't.

I dunno, considering how straightforward and often predictable the bare plot really is, I find that the greater appeal for me is the character development and interaction. To condense it in such a way would be an undertaking of Shyamalanian proportions.
