Well if LE was there, then the universe would be gone, so he's probably not at that stage yet. I do think that its oly a matter of time though, and that Scratch's role is done.
If an ominiscient/omnipotent figure is no longer needed, then its hardly a matter of time before it happens. I think Scratch is going to help Slick kill Snowman or something.
That would make sense. Snowman dies, the universe ends, Scratch dies thus causing the "Scratch", Lord English booms in.

Questioning the relevance of the intermission.
The intermission was not immediately relevant, but it is now unfolding into a big role. It may be possible that the rest of the Felt is irrelevant, for being dead in SS's current timeline, but they did set up the separation of the Midnight Crew (across timelines so they could yell at trolls to do stuff) and I expect this (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003139) to be the most relevant result of the Felt towards the end.

Well, I don't know that I'd call it much of a conspiracy theory anyway. Homestuck has already used a song from EB Halloween, and Radiation is pretty involved with the whole thing. I kinda hope some of his other boss music from EB Halloween ends up being remade and used.

The Scratch is probably a contributing factor if nothing else. I mean we've also got the Green Sun and The Tumor to deal with, and Jack himself has First Guardian powers which has to count for something.

Point of contention: If they never existed, the trolls never interacted with them or anything. As the trolls have interacted with them, either the trolls need to be reset as well, or SOMETHING that we know about the scratch/universe isn't correct, or something important was omitted.
I feel as if all the dream stuff currently going on might have something to do with this. Dave's shirt, for example, went from pre-scratch to post-scratch, as he was trying to remember who he was.
Locke cole
03-09-2011, 04:21 PM
Or it could be that, much like the non-"Alpha" timelines, a reset timeline counts as a whole different universe. Trollian isn't able to contact any timelines other than this "Alpha" one, and the Scratch eliminates that "Alpha" universe. Hence the howling void in the Trollian portal.
The reset universe isn't the same universe: that's the whole point of altered presets. This isn't like Dave's rewinding, where anything that he does has to have already happened; this is the cessation of one universe, and the birth of an identical one.

Aah, that makes a lot more sense. I was thinking the hard reset meant, "Anything that this explosion hits will never have existed", and not, "Everything still had existed, but is now exploded."
It's still worth wondering, what is the Scratch meant to do, if it's not to be used on unwinnable sessions? And why would Doc want to avoid whatever will happen, if the kids' session continues? If it continued and the universe ended, then his goal would be accomplished. It doesn't make sense.

It IS meant to be used in unwinnable sessions.
"TT: You mean, in sessions where victory is no longer possible?
Yes. "
This session is simply unwinnable in a way that is unusual.
"Failure is common. But the composition of yours is quite atypical."
As to why he wants to cause it, it's not so much that he wants to avoid what happens if the kids' session continues. He wants to die, which causing the Scratch, he has said, will facilitate. Presumably the kids' desire not to be erased in the reset will cause them to seek protection from the Scratch as he has not-so-subtly hinted is possible.
"You will be resigned to absolute oblivion.
Unless you can discover a way to preserve yourselves. "
My guess is that will involve finding a way into the troll universe, allowing Jack through as well, which will move his plans forward in some as-yet-unexplained way.

Besides, they're going to have to get the original full-sized ones from the Denizen anyway before the reset if they want to complete the timeloop that allowed it to get to Liv Tyler in the first place.
And I guess they have to strongarm Hephastus into making the Deringer with the broken Caledfwylch?
... man does this mean Rose's Cetus Denizen is going to irrelevant forever? I hope not because, man, that'd be a shame.

...Huh.
Something I've been wondering: would destroying the Green Sun in any way impair the progress of sessions? We know that First Guardians require it, so I guess the question depends on how integral First Guardians are to the game (the game does seem organized to ensure that one is created in each session) and at what point in any given session the effect takes place. Based on Rose's response, she seems to infer that LE's progression might be the result of a successful Green Sun mission, by effectively leaving him a trail of dead first guardians (each at the end of their journeys*) with dead universes to work his way through.
(*My default assumption is that the effect hits a guardian after their mission is over, because nothing Doc Scratch says suggests that other sessions can't be successful without the Green Sun, so if that's true, either First Guardians are unnecessary, or a given First Guardian has already done what they needed to do when they lose their power source.)
I don't know if that made any sense. I've been doped up and sleeping pills and about to go lie back down.
Loyal
03-10-2011, 10:22 AM
The Green Sun exists outside time and space; it would make sense that destroying the Sun would therefore destroy every instance of a First Guardian, ever, retroactively.
Given how time shenanigans work in Homestuck, however, we can draw two conclusions: One, the Green Sun mission fails, or Two, there's an additional factor to all this we're not yet aware of.
Marc v4.0
03-10-2011, 11:33 AM
Being outside of Time and Space, the exact time the Green Sun destruction takes place could be different across all sessions, and facilitate LE through all possible game sessions that have taken place or will take place across all universes.
Given how particular Homestuck is about some of their time stuff, this seems a favorite outcome.

What have I said about confirming the reliability of your sources?
I love how Doc just breaks established things by showing how little the trolls truly know
But there are rules to his entry, and his grim procession through paradox space is rather orderly. The present equilibrium has accounted for him, and will continue to.
So LE isn't quite the Death of Everything Ever Bad Times for Everyone like I had thought. But he IS evil, Scratch reveals, not some big neutral thing a la Galactus
Dracorion
03-10-2011, 04:32 PM
The comment about reliability also applies to Scratch himself, I think.
I mean, between universes being created and destroyed, doomed timelines, Sburb sessions and resets, the collective of everything that is, was, could be, never was and never will be is infinite.
Given that we know Scratch isn't really omniscient, just nearly omniscient, then I suspect that dark spots in his knowledge are actually a great many and he's not aware of most of them.

Though, they might not at all resemble the kids we know and love personality and appearance-wise because some relevant parameters are changed, with the intention to make them not screw up so hard this time.

Here's the description Doc Scratch gave of the scratch (the bold is my personal emphasis)
The release of temporal energy will be quite massive.
This is a hard reset. It will reboot the conditions in your universe well before you began playing the game.
You will have lived different lives after the reset. The different initial conditions will ideally lead to a more favorable scenario in the new session.
Unfortunately, you will have no memory of anything that has happened in the session you are in now.
In other words, we have no idea who might be the players of the new session. It could be the kids, it could not be. Regardless, the kids will still be relatively the same. It all depends on which "conditions" are changed.
However, I have a feeling (and this is pure speculation) that the kids won't be the players in the reset universe. Instead it will be their grandchildren, or at least Jade's grandson (though probably all of their grandchildren because why introduce even more characters and their grandchildren?). To me the idea that Jade (well, alternate/reset Jade) has a legitimate grandchild makes much more sense than other crazy theories like cross-species mating/ectobiology.
Fifthfiend

Crossing fingers for a conversation with Jade or Karkat tonight. Those are pretty much the best options.

Theory, trollian cross-session/cross-time feature only works because the dark gods allow it. When Rose reads that answer it shakes everything she though she knew so hard that it triggers a total disconnect between her and their influence.
This is my only reasonable theory to it, given how John's viewpoint faded after he died so that would make Rose spontaneously exploding out of the question.

John blacked out on WV's screen, since from the Exile's point of view their kid dying was a game over. He can still be seen on Trollian.

Cue fanart with Doc Scratch as the Old Spice guy.
http://i54.tinypic.com/swful2.png
0:00 - We start with the Black King’s introduction, Aradiabots from doomed timelines teleporting in and assembling, the reckoning beginning, the Vast Glub being surppressed.
1:34 - At this point, the fearless leader leaps into action as the first to attack (Crustacean). I like to think this move shreds any sense of doubt they had in Karkat as leader at this point. Karkat’s theme’s quite fun to work with, so I enjoyed this bit.
2:03 - Terezi made sense as a logical follow to Karkat (The Lemonsnout Turnabout). It starts of quite simple yet more organised than Karkat’s section, representing Terezi’s initial appearance as a fairly harmless, blind Troll girl, before building up to her surprise attack. I’d already mucked about with Terezi’s theme in my other track, but this one I think is a bit more faithful to the original.
2:34 - The King responds.
2:56 - Tavros in his Jet Car (Desperado Rocket Chairs). There’s a hint of tragedy to Tavros’ character that I think comes through here - His melody kinda builds up but just as he’s about to act it kinda fades back down. Ah well... The world’s smallest violin is playing the intro trumpet section to Tavros’ original theme here.
3:15 - Kanaya, being quite graceful and yet incredibly deadly (Virgin Orb). She pretty much stops the music and focuses all attention on her - Something she’ll do again in the future. I really like the opening of Kanaya’s theme, so this is one of my fave bits. The chainsaw is also quite a fun touch.
3:34 - Equius decides to step in and show people how it’s done with the might and efficiency only a highb100d could bring, and indeed he probably would, but Nepeta keeps being silly and sneaking in some attacks (Horschestra & Walls Covered in Blood). It was a bit of a faff combining these two, but I liked the idea of Equius’ almost military like anthem being interrupted by Nepeta’s calypso funkiness.
3:53 - Feferi and Eridan move in (Keepers). These two have worked together before, and provide a potent force against the King.
4:36 - Sollux and Aradia decide to now get involved having kept the King psychic powers in check (The La2t Frontiier & Psych0ruins). I took more or less the openings of both themes and tried gluing them together. There’s also an additional bit influenced by Aradia’s in the 2nd half.
4:56 - Based on Karkat’s description on what Gamzee’s contribution to the fight was. I figured having Gamzee ‘parody’ the King’s theme worked better here. The music doesn’t even really imply what his attack was, only that it built up, was unleashed, and surprised the hell out of everyone...
5:14 - The King’s nearly defeated and getting desperate.
5:39 - Vriska steps up, and finishes it. With one impossi8ly lucky roll.
O come all ye scallywags, sing along with me,
(For) we are the Royal Trolls, the terrors of the sea!
We pillage and plunder, and we never compromise,
We’ll sail these raging waters ‘till we take our glorious prize!
We run from no enemy and we can feel no pain.
All of the lower bloods will quake under our reign!
We build metal death machines to do just what we crave,
To pummel all the land-lovers until they’re in the grave!
Masters of the tide,
(The) stars shall be our guide.
If you’re not a royal blood,
You’d better run and hide!
Confiscate the crown,
Swing the ship around,
Take a swig of Faygo just to wash the whiskey down.
*Instrumental Break*
Our brave and fearless leader is…
Eridan!
What a hopeless romantic…
From matesprit to kismesis, his feelings are frantic!
His poor broken heart has been shattered on the floor,
But he’ll never stop until he can have her for “shore!”
Come all ye scallywags, sing along with me,
We are the Royal Trolls, the terrors of the sea!
We pillage and plunder, ‘cause we know we’ve got the nerve,
We’ll rule these stormy waters and we’ll take what we deserve!
Masters of the tide,
(The) stars shall be our guide.
If you’re not a royal blood,
You’d better run and hide!
Confiscate the crown,
Swing the ship around,
Take a swig of Faygo just to wash the whiskey down.
Yar har, anchors away!
Soon we’ll be coming to ruin your day,
Just resign to your fate.
Soon you’ll be made into Gl’Bgolyb bait.

I hope Rose will pull herself together eventually. I'm not optimistic, but I'd hate to see one of my favorite characters succumb permanently to ultragothiness.
It was nice seeing Doc interacting with someone who could provide him with worthy conversation. His main contributions to scenes are vague portents that he could easily spell out if he bothered, and the smugness with which it delivers them. He at least breaks from that periodically with Rose in favor of being kind of creepy,
Incidentally, Doc: lies of omission are totally lies when you goddamn well know how the other party will take the information they get.

...Dangit, I can't figure out whether the line Bard quoted is foreshadowing John and Rose, or whether the artistic direction of Rose "glowing black" is foreshadowing a budding romance between Rose and Kanaya, whenever Kanaya can actually contact her again.
I mean clearly, Rose remaining single is not an option, as Homestuck is all about the ships.
Also, it's fun how this development actually parallels a real-life, real-world maturation story. One way for a girl like Rose to deal with the recent loss of her mother would be in to succumb to the temptation to go full-out goth.

But given that she's not glowing at all on the next page (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=004813). Also since John wasn't god tier yet, his Dad couldn't be dead yet...(at least from what we've seen there's nothing to make us believe that was the case since Jack was sniffing around and the breeze was keeping John's location hidden from Jack) I think it's safe to assume the conversation was per-grimdark. No, when she was talking to John back then, John wasn't God tier, which meant Dad and Mom weren't dead (Jade was watching them have a tea party after John got God tier and started flying a car), so Rose couldn't have been Grimdark yet.
Remember when Doc Scratch was talking about how Rose's powers weren't from the wands, but from the gods' influence? And how she could possibly do magic even without the wands, because the black magic was inside her all along?
Dreamselves reflect the real self physically, like if you stab the real self, the dreamself will get stabbed too. It's not much of a stretch that it reflects more fundamental truths as well.
Her dreamself probably glowed black ever since she made the wands and that served as the arbitrary trigger for her magic powers.

Yeah, it's just trolling the readers. Should be used to it by now after other SB&HJ moments, and, er, the whole of 8BT. If you can possibly throw in an anticlimax, do so!Um. No, this is nothing like 8BT. Brian's teasing did not completely interrupt the narrative of the story*. Brian's teasing did not happen with the appalling frequency of what Hussie's doing, and did not happen with nearly the degree of critically terrible timing. Brian's teasing did not repeatedly come across as "Welp, I can't think of a way to go to the next scene, NONSEQUITOR TRANSITION TIME."
* The difference is that MSPA is story-driven first and foremost, with humorous elements second. 8BT is a rapidfire gag comedy with a narrative following behind it. When we cut to, say, 434, or the "Now Shut Up" page, the narrative was briefly interrupted so that the author could say something to his readers, but the flow of the jokes remained intact.

But that was Aradia FAR in the past. Unless the timer turns off upon entry into the modus, it would've blown up already. Since I think Aradia was on Alternia for more than 10 hours after getting the wallet, the tumor probably found a destination before Cal or Aradia got the wallet.
