In fact, he very likely knows it is there (he mentioned that he was spending too much time on [S] Enter. and decided to just put it up even though there was some polish missing). Point is that he does make mistakes on these long flashes, so the theory crafting on some minor graphical details (like Jade not wearing the ring before being destroyed) should probably be reigned in for a day or so, when he has a chance to see his forums flipping out over it and go "oops".I didn't notice it. I think the Trolls didn't so much screw up their game as they missed getting 100% completion. The credits roll and at the end, Eggman is still holding 3 out of 7 emeralds. Jack has all the markings of being a True Final Boss, and really, how often does the Evil King wind up being the main villain? If we're supposed to look at this like a videogame, the Black King is a pretty typical red herring. We knew about him too early on for him to wind up being the main villain.
Since dream selves seem to be less affected by timestream changes, I'm wondering if their dream selves existed before their paradox real selves. In their personal timelines, that is. Like an independent existence just based on the fact that this will one day happen. Like ripples in time or something. Makes me wonder if truly winning the game has something to do with causing their dream selves to exist outside the game.
Wasn't there a big bit of text early on that suggested things weren't quite right in John's world? If the dream self is the real one, that kind of thing would make some sense. At its core, this is still a parody of escape/adventure games.
One of the two Roses there has the wrong face (it's the smaller brighter one).
That seems like it might be an intentional stylistic choice.

WE knew about the king because the Trolls told us, and not an in-game construct (which were pointing to the denizens first). That seems like it might be an intentional stylistic choice.Nah, she had just the strained face in a shot before that, and it doesn't mesh well. I'm betting that it's just an error that's really not important enough to fix.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any idea how the denizens play into all this? There are at least a few game goals that have been laid out, including:
1) killing the denizens,
2) using the grist obtained from the denizens for the Ultimate Alchemy,
3) reaching Skaia and defeating the black king and queen.
All I can guess right now is that they're more like level bosses, being the bosses of the individual planets.

We knew about the king because Nannaquin showed us right off the bat. Granted, what she showed could be leant to an abstract interpretation, but it still made the point. Here's a big obvious villain! Oh look, his psychotic underling usurped him and is a million times worse than he ever was. You'd see that coming a million miles away in a videogame.
this is the game pretty much being shattered.

I would assume it is.
The game setting is obviously intended as a increasingly-super-impossibly elaborate game of chess(with a rank-wise addition of card games like poker, such as Jack, Queen, and King, not to mention the different suits).
At first, the Chess element is retained when the Black Queen is slain, due to the Queen not being the essential piece to a game of chess. The most powerful, perhaps, but not the piece that would mean insta-lose if lost.
The Chess motif is no longer relevant, however, when the Black King is slain by his own underling, which is impossible in Chess rules(a player could sacrifice the queen, but you cannot do the same to your king).
This new animation quite firmly cements that Jack/SS isn't in the mood for chess: Not only is he decimating both forces, he is literally destroying the playing field.
I dunno about his actual motives in full, but he really hates Chess.
POS Industries

Not true, actually. There's still one pawn left alive on the board with an item that will, for all intents and purposes, transform him into a queen on the far end of it.

Yeah, but one king has been removed from play. Unless the game counts Jack as the new Black King, then it should have ended the moment the Black King died.
The rules apply to others, but clearly not Jack. I kind of see the Agents as a separate entity from the game. They don't have to abide by the rules, as they aren't quite chess pieces.

Well, with the Black Queen's ring, the Black King's crown, and the White King's scepter, he's at the point where he's filling numerous roles in the motif. The whole chess thing is still at work, it's just that Jack's set out to break the game with its own rules.
But if my suspicion is correct, and WV? finds the White Queen's ring, the game's rules are eventually going to come back around on top of Jack in a hard, hard way.

I think they may perhaps qualify in the rook/knight/bishop category.

He's already broken the rules if he became the new King: While the King can be put in danger(check) destroying the king in an inescapable method ends the game then and there(checkmate). It's no longer about Prospit vs. Derse. There are no White or Black sides in the traditional sense. It's no longer a war, it's freaking chaos. I'd also assume destroying part of the board goes into the idea that this isn't chess anymore. I should rephrase this: this world is obviously chess-themed with certain rules and way things happen, but there is no way in hell they are playing a game of chess anymore(sorry, a lot of things in MSPA turn my brain into mush).
But if my suspicion is correct, and WV? finds the White Queen's ring, the game's rules are eventually going to come back around on top of Jack in a hard, hard way.
Perhaps, but it still stopped being a chess game when Jack started murdering indiscriminately. The setting is unchanged, however: Jack would be powerless at the moment if the rules of chess still didn't somehow have an effect, since his new powers are the result of those rules.
I think they may perhaps qualify in the rook/knight/bishop category.
Those types of pieces were the giant ground-based mecha things we saw before. Jack and his flunkies are probably like WV: pawns. Jack can inherit the powers of the ring, much like a pawn is traded for another piece.
Again, sorry for all the confusion: what I meant to say is that while the setting is chess-based, the situation most certainly isn't anymore.

Jack's getting haughty with his newfound powers. The old Jack probably would not have gone in for the ring without first surveying for potential threats.
EDIT: Also, according to Hussie, the Sword is the Royal Deringer (De-Ringer) (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=8423&p=853568#p853568). Her dream self wasn't seeing her dream self's present. It was seeing her dream self's future--but not all of it.

I had a slight feeling that it was like, CG from further in the future, as AT said that future!Jade thought that CG was a nice guy, implying that he succumbs the human emotion of Friendship and becomes less of a prick. The letter, however, seemed to state that the writer hadn't met John. So Grandpa is a good candidate.
Or, a more outlandish theory with no logical grounding would be Lord English, as Andrew stated that he would make an appearance eventually.

Are John's, Rose's and Dave's dream selves new Kings and Queens now? With the old ones dead (The white queen being the only one who's still alive, as far as I remember)?
Maybe I remember that one wrong, but I think our protagonists (or their dream selves) were called the black and white princes and princesses at some point. I have the sneaking suspicion that I mixed something up.
Please don't tell me that's not how royalty works 'cause some goddamn rules of chess are in effect or something. I know chess.

Wait, is the White King actually dead? I'm too lazy right now to watch the appropriate animation, but I think all we saw was the King hand off his scepter to ?PM, then they were attacked by HB so the scepter was dropped, but we did see that HB's attack wasn't all that successful.

I think Unbreakable Union is a better piece of music that Mutiny, but I don't think it was a great choice for that particular scene. Might be a good song for Becquerel in the long run with its ominous and somewhat more orchestral feel, but honestly, I really liked the impact and fast paced technoy feel of Mutiny.
Mutiny was definitely better for the scene though. Unbreakable Union takes too long to really get into it. Mutiny was like BAM! You're fucking THERE!

Kay, I'm re-reading the comic at the moment. Up to the first plot recap. Things that didn't make any sense whatsoever before now suddenly do. That is nice.
What I'm still slightly uncertain of is why the White Queen agreed to abdictate. I mean, sure, PM's tale must have been very heart-wrenching, but unless PM (and, through her, the queen) knew the power of what was in the box, and what consequences Jack's posession of said gift would have, there's really no good reason for her to abdictate.
And from what I gathered, Jade simply sent PM instructions regarding delivery of the gift, she didn't give any information regarding the package's nature. I could be wrong, of course. We haven't seen yet, how PM got Jade's note telling her to deliver John's present to him, right?

I think they understood intuitively, even if they didn't see the object itself or know what it was capable of. They probably don't know that they're in game, or that it's supposed to play out with the White Kingdom losing, but they may at least have been aware that they're in the weaker position.

There are presumably 8 other titles for each of the other trolls. So far, the titles may symbolize the powers they have. For instance, Dave has the Time Tables. And after John set off the Barbosol Bomb, wind came out of nowhere to put it out.

Yeah, I'm guessing the first bit (Seer, Knight, etc...) corresponds to personality, and, well, "nature" of the individual, whereas the second bit (Minds, Blood) correspond to power. Though considering the abstract-ness, it's perfectly possible for two players to have the same "suffix" (for instance "of time"), but not anywhere near the same power.

What happens if a player meets their dream-self? Like, physically, if one happens upon the other? Cause it seems quite possible. Dream-john is on Skaia, and what's to say that John couldn't get there as well? So what'd happen?
And what's up with Rose's Black Magic? I sorta took it for granted upon first reading, but now that I come to think of it, it does seem a bit too powerful. I mean, she destroyed a gate. And she "used a spell" to seal her SBURB FAQ in a veil-server. That's pretty big. And isn't she "seer of minds"? Rather than "Witch of Darkness", or whatever would be more appropriate for the powers she currently seems to be wielding.

06-22-2010, 12:14 AM
It's probable that the second half of their titles are less a matter of "Element" or "Nature" and more a simple matter of where their first gate was.
John - Breath - Land of Wind and Shade
Dave - Time - Land of Heat and Clockwork
Rose - Light - Land of Light and Rain
Karkat - Blood - Land of Pulse and Haze
Edit: Also possible that their powers are based off the land. Dave's got all the clock gears so he gets time travel. Rose's Land could aptly be described as "magical" in every sense of the word.
We don't know what, if anything, John can do outside of use his Hammerkind (and bunnykind) specibus, but his Land seems rather "normal", and thus may himself be. On top of that, it's the only Land we've seen with anything resembling civilization which may lend credence to John's probable, eventual role as the Leader.
Geminex
06-22-2010, 01:50 AM
Well, as far as civilization goes, that one goddamn stupid civilization. In other words, I don't think he's leader by virtue that his planet is home to tribes of dumb salamanders. Hell, the inhabitants of Rose's planet are probably smarter, and they've been dead for millions of years.
Yeah, I'm guessing the fact that he's leader has something to do with his character, or power, or the fact that he entered the medium first.
And yeah, the titles seem to correspond to the planets.
But does a player's planet define their title define their power?
Or is it the other way around, is the power inherent, and that in turns defines their planet and title? Cause I think it's the latter.

06-24-2010, 06:02 AM
Ok, this is really interesting.
See, I had, so far, assumed that what distinguished John's, Rose's, Dave's and Jade's session from all other possible "sessions" was the fact the Rose's fore-knowlege of events allowed her to modify them (conciously and unconciously) to achive some aim or another. But now it seems that aa has at least as much knowlege of coming events, at least as much ability to influence coming events.
Y'know what I think? I think all the rules, the whole scheme of "Build high, go through the gates, face the king and queen, save Skaia", that's all a big facade. It's... not the real purpose. It's a way to play the game, but it's not the inherent goal of the game. Understand what I mean? The real game goes deeper, there's something beneath the surface.
Because the big failure that aa's forseeing, that's the one that's gonna be caused by the "protagonists". That's no mistake. Whatever the "Rift" is that's been mentioned, it's supposed to happen. And it's being engineered by some entity, for some purpose. Both teams are going to fail in one way, but they're supposed to.
Question is, why?
The thing that has really been making me wonder is, as you said, why? I mean, at the beginning, when John was speaking with Nannasprite, we were led to believe that the point of the game is to save Skaia and help defeat the Black King and so forth. As Nannasprite said, even though their planet would be destroyed, they were accomplishing something much greater, in protecting Skaia.
However, we've since learned that there are multiple copies of the game, such as on Alternia, with the exact same premise played out differently. All the same people and places, the only difference in who's playing. If the whole scenario is just a copy-and-paste gameset, why is it so important to win? Why is it worth the destruction of a planet, and why are these multiple Skaias so vital to protect?
There's got to be a bigger point to all this, obviously. With Rose's refusal to play by the rules, we're definitely going to have to see where things start branching off from the previous instructions; also, since the Trolls won't be able to see the kids for much longer, that means that shit's probably about to get real(er), once we get back to them. I'm looking forward to the curveballs on their way.
The planet's going to be destroyed whether the game is played or not.

By seeing their playthrough, we get a better idea of what an "ideal" playthrough looks like. Their's probably wasn't 100% what it was supposed to be like, but I think knowing how things should go will put how things are going in the main one in perspective.
Or it's just as some of us suspected and Karkat was full of shit.

Of course. Skaia is one of the Yozis. Probably She Who Lives In Her Name.
The planet's going to be destroyed whether the game is played or not.
Exactly. So what is the point of Sburb? It's not to save your planet. It was apparently to save Skaia, but it turns out Skaia isn't even something all that special or unique, but rather something that just gets copypasted from world to world. So why is the game important, is the question. What is the motivating factor, beyond keeping what few people you can alive?
Geminex

The planet's going to be destroyed whether the game is played or not.
No, I think it's more that it's inevitable that the game is played. The destruction of the planet is linked to that. The game cannot not be played, thus the planet cannot not be destroyed
And to PCD:
Well, see it this way: You've played Portal, right? Glados directing your way through the various chambers, taunting you, being "the enemy". But always talking about "the test". Even when you escaped from the death trap, it still seemed like a test. You still had to take one path, complete certain tasks. Even when you fought her, you had to fight her. And if "Still Alive" is anything to go by, that was exactly what was supposed to happen. And, perhaps Portal 2 will contradict me on this, but by winning the game, by completing challenge upon challenge and destroying her, you played into Glados' hands. You lost.
In-game, the only way to win would have been to escape from the area, to find a way not to participate in the tests, to display a type of behavior she couldn't analyse. In other words, to break the rules and escape from the game.
I think the same thing has to happen here. The whole "Save Skaia!" thing is a front used to manipulate players to engage in certain activities. The Sprites, and pretty much everything else, are part of this front. But there's something else guiding the Players, be it Exiles or Precogniscent Players, and they seem to be guiding them towards an entirely different goal. Both of these are manipulating them in some way or another.
To what end? I'm guessing it has something to do with the "nature" of the universe, and with the super-powerful demon. What they're "supposed" to do is achieve... one thing or another, and, I think, to ultimately foil said demon. And if not the demon, then to achieve another aim.
But that's not the important question. "Why?" is important, but far more important is "Who?".
See, this is a game. People die, planets get destroyed, but it's still a game. Set up by someone to achieve a certain purpose. But who set it up? Who designated the purpose, created the "front", arranged everything to guide the players?
Who, in other words, is the Game Master?
Also, what're the odds that the "Demon" is Lord English? The virus definitely has something to do with the Felt Gang, the green exterior and the numbers indicate that.
Ok, I stopped reading this about the time we switched to the trolls. Is this really necessary? I mean, I appreciate telling the story from multiple viewpoints but it was confusing enough as it was.
No, it's making it clearer. It was really confusing around the time GC trolled John to death. It's been making more sense ever since, and this just adds understanding. I think.

According to his Formspring, we are literally half-way through right now. Which wouldn't be so bad, except this isn't exactly the best paced stretch, and it's starting to drag when we aren't seeing silly irrelevant troll antics (like mock trials and Pokemon fights). I hope Andrew is seeing the grumbling and straightens up the pacing a bit (Most of it is coming from him trying to be unpredictable for when the suggestion box will be open for troll naming), otherwise it'll be a long three weeks and will make the troll arc be a low point.

Anyway.
That Crosbytop is kind of freaking me out.
I mean think about it:
1) For all we know it obviously originates on Earth because everybody else refers to Crosby as some sort of freakish alien being (also it doesn't have horns and is not John Cusack)
2) It appears throughout Alternia's timeline (the troll arc/Midnight Crew intermission)
3) Alternia, as far as we know, takes place before Earth and is part of a separate session at that.
4) Why would the Crosbytop be sent back in time from Earth to Alternia?
Alternatively
3) Alternia actually takes place after Earth, thus explaining how the trolls are able to survey the Earth kids' progress (because it all already happened)
4) Somehow the Crosbytop is created during the kids' playthrough (modifying the Cosbytop somehow?) and it ends up in another planet in the future?
Or maybe
3) Alternia is in an alternative reality oh fuck no why make things even more confusing with shit like alternative realities when we already have interstellar time travel and dream worlds all up our necks dang and there's not much precedence for that besides
