I finally am up to speed on my several day catchup of this (catchup as in from page 1) and I have never had more fun reading a webcomic. Favorite part in terms of humor had to be when John almost broke from being told to go get cookies. Favorite action part had to be everything involving Dave and/or his brother.

Now it seems as though we are starting to hit the point where this utter shitload of puzzle pieces and paradoxes was only the pointy tip on the tip on the tip of the iceberg. Probably both, since it seems that Lord English, Doc Scratch and anyone of similar greenery are all about time travel tomfoolery. He probably managed to use timetravel haberdashery to connect Snowman to the death of the universe using some sort of time-travel timey wimey bit of helterskelter like with the troll programming but in reverse (???).

To be honest half the reason I wrote this post was to play with font-coloring as much as possible.

I repurpose vast quantities of graphics.

Sometimes it is for speed. And sometimes (as in that case) it was actually slower to do it that way than it would be to just draw it from scratch.

There is an idea which is behind reusing visuals like that, much like I reused the shot of Dave lying on the ground using his iPhone to show a crippled Tavros doing the exact same thing.

The idea is tied to the huge volume of textual callbacks, reusing phrases from the narrative and bits of dialogue, tweaking them sometimes. This happens probably more than anyone realizes. You could possibly read the story ten times and not catch them all. Nothing is safe from reuse. The thing is a litany of a thousand refrains, visual, verbal and conceptual.

So what is the idea? I don't feel like elaborating on it THAT much now, because I would probably type forever. Basically, it's about building an extremely dense interior vocabulary to tell a story with, and continue to build and expand that vocabulary by revisiting its components often, combining them, extending them and so on. A vocabulary can be (and usually is) simple, consisting of single words, but in this case it extends to entire sentences and paragraph structures and visual forms and even entire scenes like the one linked above. Sometimes the purpose for reiteration is clear, and sometimes there really is no purpose other than to hit a familiar note, and for me that's all that needs to happen for it to be worthwhile. Triggering recognition is a powerful tool for a storyteller to use. Recognition is a powerful experience for a reader. It promotes alertness, at the very least. And in a lot of cases here, I think it promotes levity (humor! this is mostly a work of comedy, remember.) Controlling a reader's recognition faculty is one way to manipulate the reader's reactions as desired to advance the creative agenda. In this case I'm not exactly sure what that agenda is all the time, and in truth there probably isn't any serious agenda there. This story, though at times seeming diabolically put together, is still pretty light reading after all. if anything I'm just striving for a certain pitch in density with the all the multithreaded symbolism and endless internal reference. Think of it as a symphony and everything I've referred to as belonging to a vocabulary are really just notes, working together in a really complicated harmonic structure.

Closest to human love. It is when two trolls both feel pity for each other in a lively manner. This might not sound right, but let me explain it this way: when you see a girl who fell down do to clumsiness, you might feel a gush of love for them, but there is also pity there. Trolls believe that Pity and Hate are the two strongest emotions. Therefore, they have no concept of love, just a feeling of pity so strong they want to be with that troll forever.

This one was harder to figure out, but I believe it's a one sided relathionship. Where one Troll has pity for another and attempts to help them. Either way the main emotion is still pity, but it is twinged a bit with hate. Some Trolls see this as sad, and like being 'friend zoned'

This is another complex one. I believe it is when one troll aids two others in becoming one of the other three types of pairs. A matchmaker if you will. Except in troll society, this is considered a whole relationship on it's own! It would seem that suggesting flat out that one be Auspistice for a pair is as offensive as saying to couple not quite fully in love 'go fuck already'. I believe being Auspistice for a pair would only last briefly, but would be much the talk of other as in gossip. The predominating emotion of the whole experience is hate, since most trolls clearly despise meddling in all it's forms, but there's some pity there in the one who chooses to be Auspistice for a pair.

This is the polar opposite of Matesprit. It's a shared hating of such a degree, that the pair becomes intimate. They hate each other with such a passion that the only way to show it is with passion for each other.

I have a lot of pity and sympathy for Vriska. Don't get me wrong, she's an incredible BITCH, but it's becoming more clear now that she's just not capable of interacting with people in a non-antagonistic fashion, possibly due in large part to having a Lusus that needed to be constantly fed other trolls.

Something that occurs to me...

On Nepeta's Shipping Wall (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=004195), Hearts are Matesprits ("twoo wuv") and Diamonds are Moiralliegance (I've heard it described as one being emotionally dependent, in some way, on the other).

Nepeta is obviously dependent on Equius, and Vriska on Kanaya. Assuming the troll on the left is the supporter and the one on the right is the dependent...

Who the hell is Vriska (top-right) supporting? Same goes for Tavros for that matter.

Those seem more like probabilities, so from Nepata's perspective it doesn't seem to out of place to think Vriska is acting as a possible support to, say, CaligulasAquarium. As for Tavros, possibly Gamzee.

Keep in mind that Nepata sees Equius as being dependent on her because of his freakish tendencies, so the positioning in the panels might not mean too much. Apparently it's possible for two people to be morails with each other in both directions. It's like, from a matter of perspective in which the two are supporting each other but not actively doing it together for the beneficial growth of each other as a couple, but for one to support the other as an individual without expecting active reciprocation in kind (ie sloppy makeouts)*.

Although if you look at the Mesprit, there's one character repeating when looked sideways, so assuming that this is an actual pattern and that it holds for all the other sections then it could be either Karkat/Gamzee in the Vriska panel and Karkat/Kanaya in the Tavros one.

It sounds like it's kind of regular expressions, where asterixs are used to denote zero or more. If that's the case maybe putting in square brackets or something can help.

Yeah, if you put it in square brackets when adding in your quirk then you can send in an asterix as however. Same probably goes for periods. Also basically anything that is punctuation, put it in square brackets, in case it means something in regular expressions. The brackets will turn it from 'expression' (period = wildcard) into 'literal' (period = period).

Also, if you want several individual letters to turn into the same replacement, you can put them all within some square brackets, so replacing all vowels with "H" would be [aeiou] in one and then H in the other.

Basically anything that works in regular expressions should work here.

EDIT: You say you lose your chumhandle and chum list? Go into the configuration file and change the default handle to your handle. Then for your chumroll you'll have to go "Client" then "Save". If this doesn't work then you could splice in the chumroll code. Here's an example.

This is one of those sections where, if you were to read it as part of the archives later on down the road, would only be a quick bit of information that wouldn't feel like it were bogging down the whole story at all. However, from the perception of someone reading it as it updates, it feels like it's taking an eternity because you have only three pages over the course of the day and they're all about this silliness.

This is probably something that anyone on the Nuklear Power Forums should have gotten used to at any point over the past decade, by the way.

Also (and crossposting from elsewhere here), I always felt that the thematic elements of family bonds and relations between the Homestuck cast were the driving force behind the story itself, all the way to the point that the members of the main cast were even all born at the same time, but more specifically with plot points such as each kid's interactions with their familial guardians, the four of them being revealed as two pairs of siblings, and the only romance so far being--quite fittingly--between Mom and Dad serving to unite the sibling pairs into a single quartet of stepsiblings further driving the point home until this run-on sentence wins the Boston Fucking Marathon holy shit.

The trolls, meanwhile, have nothing in their society that equates to the sort of family dynamic that humans have, so in order for their adventure to mirror the kids' thematically, Hivebent is driven by the 12 main characters being interconnected via their complex system of romantic entanglements. Had Hivebent been the main story instead of Homestuck, these things would have probably been drawn out more subtly, but as it is being presented as something of the Cliff's Notes version as an interlude while attempting to save time by cutting down on rehashing the same adventure plot points that already occurred in the main narrative, it comes off to (arguably less apt) readers as just one big kissyface soap opera shipwreck, even though all that's happened is that one romance and one love triangle were introduced in immediate succession and the entire rest of the interlude has had nothing to do with it.

I will say that, as Hussie has noted on more than one occasion, this interlude was intended to be a fair bit shorter than it ended up being, but I can't really fault him too much for having a little fun with exploring his characters.
