Don't think too hard about posts EvilEarl made. I wouldn't go as far as saying they are completely devoid of any logic, sometimes they make some sense, but his mind certainly doesn't use a logic that makes much sense in our universe. It's best to just discard an EE post that isn't very clear to you at first glance as a fun little interlude between two posts.

Logic doesn't have a good track record with me.

But I'm starting to see a trend I like, more slapping and head-bonking.

EDIT: Quote sigged for safe keeping.

Loyal
08-23-2010, 12:47 PM
This explains quite a bit, actually. How Sollux can die twice, how all the trolls are fated to die, yet they're all in the future.

Though I wonder why Aradia doesn't have a dreamself. Grandpa Harley's dreamself remains quite well off in spite of his deadness.

Wigmund
08-23-2010, 01:09 PM
Though I wonder why Aradia doesn't have a dreamself.

Because she's already dead.

Art of Hilt
08-23-2010, 01:18 PM
It's possible that Grandpa already woke up his dreamself before he died, while Aradia did not. Like, if the dreamself never woke up before death, then it will never wake up full stop. It would also explain why Aradia made sure Sollux fell asleep and made him visit Prospit.

Or maybe her 'ghost' is also her dreamself? I doubt that, though. The diagram seemed to imply that her dreamself never existed, otherwise it'd show it with a big X on it like with Sollux's body.

Although I have to wonder how Grandpa can gallivant around on John's planet while- oh no wait giant space battleship that's right.

katiuska
08-23-2010, 02:24 PM
I'm not sure that it's his dreamself and not the actual Grandpa Harley before he died, because he was able to travel between Earth and the Medium.

Also: ohshit troll shirts.

PCD
08-23-2010, 02:31 PM
Yeah, I don't think that that's Grandpa Harley's dreamself as much as it's him inside the medium before his death--otherwise he'd be wearing a silly outfit of some sort. Also, as far as we know, he isn't a player within the game, so he shouldn't have a dream self. My guess with Aradia is that you need to be alive at the beginning of the game in order to have a dreamself? Not sure about that, though. Maybe Sollux stole her extra one.

in other words bluh bluh weird plot shit

Art of Hilt
08-23-2010, 02:42 PM
The reason I'm guessing it's his dreamself is the way he got into the game. Everyone else's Guardian came with the kids on to their planets. As far as we know, the only Grandpa with Jade- who hasn't entered the game yet- is the stuffed Grandpa.

Therefore the Grandpa with the giant battleship must have found a way to get there without waiting for his kid to enter the game. Unless there's some element of yet-to-be-introduced plot (from his travels, maybe?), Grandpa must have woken up somehow and pilfered the battleship from either Prospit or Derse depending on where he woke up.

This is all conjecture because, yeah, he's not wearing a magical dream outfit and he seems to operate on the same level of reality as the other Guardians. On the other hand he was able to interact with others' dreamselves (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003870). Not at all sure what that means, though, because it's not impossible for the real and the dream to be in the same place at once?

Man Vriska's 7-iris eye is several kinds of weird without a lens.

Aldurin
08-23-2010, 05:26 PM
My theories to the discussion.

1: Every dead person (including guardians) has a ghost self. Grandpa somehow possessed Jade's future kernelsprite and entered his stuffed body and then traveled back in time. (Unlikely and stupid, but we never know with homestuck.)

2: In the same way that Sollux has telekinesis, Aradia has a power. But this power either directly or indirectly manifests her as a ghost after death. And something about being dead/self-spriting disqualifies her from having a dream self. (This one makes my brain hurt less, so I like this one better.)

MuMu
08-23-2010, 06:04 PM
Only players have dreamselves. Grandpa got in the same way the White Queen got out, time portals shit.

I guess that since Aradia has been dead since way before the Trolls began playing the game, she got no counterpart on Derse/Prospit.

Only players have dreamselves. Grandpa got in the same way the White Queen got out, time portals shit.

Huh, I hadn't thought of that. Time portals is the most sensible theory. But I thought those only opened up on Skaia-side during the Reckoning?

Then again, they might start to open up 'around' the Reckoning, and since the Reckoning happened so early, then it would explain why Grandpa was there since the beginning of the session as well.

Also CD is the most huggable exile

katiuska
08-23-2010, 10:40 PM
Well, Jack has five names if you count "Scurrilous Straggler" and "Jackspers Noirlecrow," but I think he might be a special case. We haven't seen any agents named besides Jack outside their government role/exile name/MC identity, and CD, HB, and DD haven't been that important.

The recent turn of events is taking an awesome direction. I think it might be Snowman instructing her, given the font and the intentions. Especially since Slick's last target is Lord English who is the super demon to appear at the end of the universe. And especially since Slick still has Die's voodoo doll.

But I really want the story to keep it's pace as I want to see if Beuc's DNA was half of that from Doc Scratch. It would make sense given the pigmentation and the flashy green lightning.

I think the kings need to die for the game to end, so it is unlikely a king was exiled. Although it is somewhat possible that the White King abdicated and fled.

The way I see it, the exiles that aren't Snowman or the Midnight Crew are largely unimportant.

Edit: Actueally, it was said that all first Guardian's had that DNA sequence. The only First Guardians we have seen are Scratch and Bec. The idea is that one player writes the code on their walls and the First Guardian is later paradox cloned with the code to 'fulfill the planet's purpose.' What the purpose of Earth and Alternia is remains unknown.

I think the reason why I think something happened is because when John said that Karkat was "basically in love with you" and Terezei was all "Wait did he actually say that? In confidence?"

I remembered that because that's when I first thought, "Oh so a relationship between them could actually develop and this is the timeshit equivalent of predating gossiping huh", but if the relationship already developed, then that would be kind of a strange question to ask so I dunno.

That will be the last update while I do a bit of animation. It ought to take... maybe a week? Let's call it a week.

I'm sure I could do it faster. In fact, I can't really promise I won't! (<- horrible thing for me to say, ensuring rampant F5ing several days from now until time of next update.)

But I will err on granting the task a wider berth. I keep making this pact with myself, sort of like a recurring New Year's resolution that has no particular affiliation with any calendar event, that I will try and take it easier on this thing now and then. I repeatedly fail to honor this resolution, and like that pledge to lose those stubborn holiday pounds which so easily falls by the wayside, I cannot seem to shed the drawing hours. And so I keep drawing and wallowing and eating ice cream.

What am I even talking about anymore.

My immediate guess was that this flash is going to end up being an epic animation giving a quick run-over of how the rest of the Troll's session goes. Andrew has stated several times in places like his Formspring and whatnot that the point of this arc has been to establish the Trolls as characters rather than to show the little details of their game. Now that we've met all twelve, gotten a hefty dose of their alien lifestyle and had a good grasp on how they interact, I think it makes sense that he's planning to wrap up this side of things and illustrate how they ended up in the Veil trolling aliens.

A great way to pass the time while we wait for the animation is to view/contribute to the MSPA Forum Image Manipulation Thread!! (http://www.mspaforums.com/showthread.php?29862-IMAGE-MANIPULATION-THREAD-What-s-the) It's the maniacal works of many fans and their image-editing programs. Don't think that this is for an NPFer? Think again!! I've contributed much to this thread (and at the same time made my photo bucket account a backup resource in case I need to use the insanity defense in court) and it just keeps getting better.

I wanna see Sollux and Aradia fight now.

And I can see how their sgrub session failed, given how their at eachothers throats at this.

When this whole troll chapter started, it sounded like the two teams were in a friendly competition to see who could "win" first (if that's even possible), not this whole lasers and telekinetic robo-ghosts beating the shit out people thing.

Bard The 5th LW

I know Aradia had her emotions back and was getting revenge, but I think Vriska deserves it slightly less now than she did back when. She is still a huge bitch, but slightly less huge. Tavros seemed more frightened of Aradia now than he did Vriska in the past. Vriska is not necessarily sympathetic, but I think she has become a bit more likable.

And the Troll's Session didn't fail because they were so bad at teamwork. In fact, we are told that they actually won. Its something the kids did that screwed them over.

I believe it was said in one of Karkat's logs with John. He may have been lying, but he said several times how great they all were (which isn't really a lie, they are individually pretty great). And during the memo with Kanaya, he says that a 600 hour session was good time, which implies they finished it. Due to the Rift though, their victory was more or less nullified.

The Trolls win according to ours(And theirs) definition of 'winning': Defeating the Black King. Except that as far as we've seen, that does not equals getting your homeworld back, so they're stuck in the Veil.

The Kids gamebreaking so far only affected their own session, in my opinion what Karkat(And the rest of the trolls fear) is that Jade is eventually going to break the game in a way that affects all sessions(Like prototyping Bec, which is the current theory), which would explain the Rift at the end of the Trolls timeline.

It was established a long, long time ago that the players' home planet gets destroyed one way or another. The fact that Exiles are common both to the Kids' session and the Trolls' implies that there are going to be some Exiles in every session, whose job it is to rebuild things after all is said and done.

I think what I like most about the flash animations is the fact that they're mostly sprite-less. Sprites are fun, but it's awesome to see the trolls' "real" shape.

Doubt it. I'm pretty sure the Midnight Crew storyline takes place long after the Exile's part is done. Spades is personally responsible for building the town where/when the intermission takes place. It's possible for the consoles to be interacted with due to Wierd Time Shit, but all the Exiles/Midnight Crew except Spades are dead after the intermission, so I think the timeline for their involvement goes something like:

- Troll's game session begins
- SS/CD/HB/DD are exiled
- Troll's game session ends
- Exiles interact with Trolls via consoles
- Spades Slick rebuilds civilization on Alternia, Midnight Crew formed.
- [INTERMISSION] Shenanigans with the Felt, during or after which everyone but Spades Slick and Snowman (presumably English as well) ends up dead.
- Spades Slick continues to mess around with the consoles.

It just doesn't seem to make much sense for the Exiles to bother with the trolls once they've got civilization reestablished and a city to run, unless they had no other recourse.

I think all of the MC from the original timeline got thrown to different timelines in the same temporal effect as one of the green torsos did whenever wounded, but this time caused by the vault being crowbarred. The result sent each of the MC to a timeline where the rest of the MC was dead and they were right next to a console, the snowman in SS's timeline is not the original snowman who is now commanding Terezi to kill Jack.

Time shit is weird, but it's Jack's fault that we have to deal with it.

I think there's something significant about the loading screen for "Make her pay". Four of the symbols have the shiny flash (I noticed Vriska's and Tavros' symbols) and one symbol turns red during the flash. Then one of the other ones that doesn't flash constantly switches between blue and red.

The one that switches is Aradia. She used to have red blood, but the Soulbot has blue.

Dave's, John's and Rose' dream selves all drew stuff on their walls. Said stuff stemmed from their subconsciousness. I get Rose's, more or less, and Dave's sorta. But what's with John's? Clowns and insults, what is this? Not to mention that this stuff is in his real-life bedroom as well. Gah. Does anyone understand how this all fits together?

Also, what are dream-selves anyway? Yes, manifestations of the players on prospit and derse, I understand that much. But really, what rules govern them? What timeframe do they exist in? The wiki really doesn't say anything (cause, really, neither does the story), so I guess I'm just asking for speculation here. But maybe something sounds right.

I wondered about that myself. Although they appear as the optimal physique for each troll (except Terezi, getting double-blinded in her sleep. and aradia who is dead), questions pop up on what determines where they appear (everyone except rose on prospit for human session and possibly by team for troll session).

But to put priorities on what I want to see.
1. Whether or not Jade ever enters the dream session (ahab's crosshairs may have just been a code from eridan, or it could be Jade's ultimate weapon that became an artifact in for eridan later).
2. I want to actually see that robo-bunny in flash-animated combat.
3. Rose and Dave kicking more ass.
4. If the trolls and humans ever meet in person (if they both end up in that place after Skaia, they might be in there at the same time due to the complete disregard for temporal physics in the communications).
5. John alchemizing a weapon the size of a truck.

PCD
09-15-2010, 12:05 PM
Jade's already in the dream session. She always has been. That's why there's nothing on her walls; she's had the ability to be awake in her dreams from the start. That's why she knows stuff from the future, remember? ...Actually, more accurate would be to say that her dream session has ended. Because her dream self just got a little bit squished by the moon.

Also, Rose isn't alone on Derse, Dave is there with her. She flew over to his tower and had a dance party.

Bard The 5th LW
09-15-2010, 02:14 PM
I figured that the Dream Selves serve as easier ways to get to Derse or Prospit to serve a purpose there. The Dream Selves also seem to be more free than the real selves (dream!Jade grew more arms. They could all fly), so they probably are more apt fighters than the normal selves. In addition, the troll session shows that they can serve as extra lives. If one wants to perform a risky action, but doesn't want to risk themself personally, they bring their dreamself instead.

How can Aradia die? She's already dead, if her robot breaks than she's just a kernelsprite with telekinesis. And so far kernelsprites have shown the ability to attack while enemies hardly acknowledge their existence.

And I somehow assume that she is going to fuck this up. Big time. Simply because this game sucks in terms of turnout ("Jack Queen" turning Skaia into a wasteland, relentless hordes of enemies that seem to become stronger over time, there's evidence that easy mode is not an option).

I think the fusion with the robot ended up being more binding than just a regular vessel.
Also the sprite's limitations are pretty ambiguous. Are they even allowed to exist outside their player's planet, or house for that matter?

She died, doomed herself utterly, called it inevitable (though she did have a choice, she didn't have to, she chose to acknowledge that the future must come to pass the way she knew it would!) because she knew it'd be the only way to gain victory against their greatest foe, while knowing that even if they defeated him, they'd fail anyway. That's so badass, so chekov's gun, so very chessmaster... I'm honestly lost for words. Screw Terezi, Aradia gets best troll.

Notcie that Vriska has her vision eight-fold back, meaning that Aradia's beatdown did kill her, and that she had to switch over to her 2nd life.

Considering Tavros's words, dream selves probably lose their abilities (i.e: flight) if the real delf dies.

So the kids are responsible for Lord English, who appears when the universe ends. If Snowman dies then the universe ends.

John killed Snowman?

I still wonder when and where the sessions cross over and allow them to fight side-by-side.

And my final curiosity, Ahab's Crosshairs. Given to robobunny as the rifle ultimate weapon (suggesting that she actually enters Sburb at some point) and Eridan has it (possibly as an artifact from the robobunny or maybe a copy that fell through a rift or something. I think it's a pivotal point.

And that reminds me, I want to see a flash animation with RB actually fighting stuff with his badass weapons.

and Eridan has it (possibly as an artifact from the robobunny or maybe a copy that fell through a rift or something. I think it's a pivotal point.Alternia's session takes place an unspecified number of millions of years before Earth's. On top of that, Ahab's Crosshairs are almost certainly compatible with SBurb/Grub's alchemy system, and so there's no reason why the Crosshairs would necessarily be a unique item.

I still wonder when and where the sessions cross over and allow them to fight side-by-side.Or if. It's possible that the Kids-Troll interaction will remain chat only. I suspect if there's any Weird Time Shit the Trolls could have discovered, which would allow them to physically intervene in the Kids' session, they would have used it already.

If it does happen, the Kids will likely be responsible.

BitVyper

So the kids are responsible for Lord English

Something that happens in the kids' session leads to a scratch being created which is responsible for Lord English showing up in the troll session. This is Lord English's hand being forced. It's not something that he wants to happen. At least, that's what is being suggested so far. Makes sense though - anything that fucks over causality is going to be a serious monkey wrench in a plan that relies on causality (which would be all plans, but in this case, fucking over causality may be the only way to mess with it).

I don't think Lord English would engineer the end of the universe. It would be kind of pointless, since the fact that the universe will end at all is really all he needs. Ending it sooner, based on what we know of him, would probably just be cutting his meal down to a smaller portion.

On another subject; I'm guessing The Ultimate Reward is creation - the sort of creation that goes along the lines of "first there was nothing, then there was..." It's now been heavily suggested (by the most reliable source we have on the matter) that if the gods didn't make the game as a test, they're at least using it as such. Right from the very beginning, the game is all about building and creating. Every participant MUST be both a server and a player for the session to succeed, meaning they experience and utilize the power of creation as the server, its direct effects as the player, and sub-creation through the alchemeter (or however you spell it) in order to reach an end. It's like The Last Starfighter for potential gods. And Skaia itself is said to be a place of massive creative power.

It's the only reward I can think of that makes sense. They obviously aren't getting their world back. The only other thing I can imagine is that it's all a huge lie, but that seems really unnecessary.

Edit: Now is as good a time as any to point out that Lord English in Alternia's future from the Midnight Crew intermission didn't have a fancy graphic in his name, and still hasn't had one inserted. Seems like the sort of thing one would have thought of while making the graphic, so I'm kinda thinking that's intentional.

Speculation: they did the Ultimate Alchemy at the Forge using the grist they received from defeating the Denizens. The Ultimate Alchemy creates the universe. The Ultimate Reward is to go through the door, which leads them to this new universe for them to live in. If they don't go through the door to get their Reward, then the universe evolves naturally on its own, and eventually develops its own life.

Also I just realized that Hivebent wasn't just a troll arc, that its purpose was not just to introduce the trolls and familiarize us with an 'ideal' SBURB/SGRUB session.
It was a Creation Myth

PS- No that's not me. I made the realization by reading that post. It was second hand realization.

...how exactly did they make the universe, again? Just winning, or what?

Could be the Ultimate Alchemy, like Arc is saying, but I get the feeling that if that's what it is, then that's only the final part of it. This goes beyond just combining or fabricating objects from basic codes. I think it's probably the act of playing the game itself that does it, sort of like the singing of the Ainur - how all the different parts of the song played out on the world. Right from the get-go, various things about the players are imprinted on their Medium (calling it The Medium makes a lot more sense now) - their kernelsprites, their first totems, and whatever aspects of their selves are drawn on to create their personal worlds.

And I disagree about the whole "they created the world through playing the game" thing. I don't think playing the game actually created the universe. The Creation would have happened through ultimate alchemy, once the denizens were defeated. The trolls would have had an influence on how it turned out, and since the game influenced them pretty massively, it does have an indirect influence. But I think at most, the trolls just left... signatures. Frogs and myths and zodiac signs. Which really makes me regret that I was born under Virgo (no offense, Kanaya), rather than, say, Libra.

It might have been the Ultimate Alchemy, but remember Skaia is the 'source of unlimited creative potential'. It is very possible that just being on Skaia allowed them to craft Earth. Or it may have been the Ultimate Alchemy and Skaia.

The exiles appear on the wasteland of the players planet because they go through the portals that appear around Skaia due to the reckoning.

The players get a new, prosperous planet, and the carapaces get their old, ruined planet and have to repair the pieces.

spades also symbolize Jack Noir...so it could mean multiple things

There is not a huge amount of significance to this other than 1) he likes magic and card tricks, and all the Harry Anderson stuff in his room reminds of this, 2) it is the symbol favored by Jack Noir, the bad guy he's destined to face in this game, and 3) it is taken by Karkat as an omen that this kid he just discovered was meant to be his kismesis. You know, I'd love to play a game that's a combo of Spore, the Sims and Earthbound...as long as it doesn't lead to the apocalypse.

I think that'd be fun as hell. You start out as the universe's creator (essentially the role the Trolls play in Homestuck), then after sentient life evolves you move into the role of determining the client's life (essentially the server) and finally you move into controlling the main character/client themselves through the game itself as they overcome challenges and whatnot, and it all ends with your character creating the next universe (new game).
