Dr. McNinja's last two updates were seriously fantastic and as much as I hate to say it, I'm curious about Gunnerkrigg at the moment.
Penny Arcade was real good recently as well.
I wouldn't feel ashamed, because while his stuff is fantastic who knows how it'd turn out if he was writing a full length piece?

So, during this most recent qwantz guest week I've learned that Carly Monardo is indeed awesome when outside the confines of Dr. McNinja/Venture Bros, Daisy Owl (and the attendant writer) is great (but I knew that already (http://www.daisyowl.com/comic/2008-08-11)), the guy from SMBC is trying way too hard, and if I had more time I'd probably do an archive binge of Moe. I'm guessing in tomorrow's update I will once again learn that I don't quite get MSPaint Adventures.

Fuck looking at that desecration of the format for the exact quote, but the part where Utahraptor points out that the panel changing as you read it being annoying was spot on. Hanging a lampshade on how poorly executed your idea is does not stop it from being poorly executed.
And even though I won't go out of my way to email them or anything, I hope the robo-noir option gets the most votes over at Penny Arcade.

Oh. By all means then, bask in misery. Pfft, that's no way to deal with superior writing. What you do is go and write something so madly brilliant it makes all writers in the world commit honorable seppuku with their pens upon the realization that there's nothing left to write. (Thank you Neil Gaiman.)
As for webcomics, I'm currently reading this little sprite comic 8-bit Theater, don't know if you've heard of it. It's actually very interesting now that we know most of how it's going to turn out, all those thousands of times BM joke about killing everyone starting with Fighter are much less funny.
Oh by the way I invite you all to read these two comics (http://odaw.comicgenesis.com). One is silly and heavily conceptual and the other is serious and overly ambitious.

I'm pretty sure he spends most of his time drunk at McAwesome's.
The thing about Mike is that he's never given any sign of enjoying being an asshole. He's got this angry face on all the time, and it's probable that he really is sincerely angry at everyone.
Now while it's possible he's perfectly willing to be angry at you for no real reason, he's not gonna leave a perfectly good reason to be angry at you lying on the table.

I'm just saying that his anger/hatred mostly seems to manifest itself as like, helping people to confront their personal issues in a way that in the long term will probably make them better off, and not so much with the hurting their feelings and ruining their lives (via death).
Anyway what I really came here to say is Odysseus the Rebel (http://www.bigheadpress.com/otr?page=0) fucking rules, which is to say that it took a story that already rules, got rid of the parts that sucked, and threw in some parts that rule even more.

Oh no, he really is a sociopath. He doesn't like to show it, but there are signs here and there that he's proud of his achievements and likes to have them recognized (http://www.shortpacked.com/comics/20050624a.gif). He's always served the occasional dose of tough love from time to time, though it's an open question whether he's actually trying to help anyone (or just hurt them with an observation they can't refute), and he does do genuinely indefensible and unprovoked things. You'll note that while he was getting on wonderfully with Amber on their recent date, he was still inflicting violence on innocents (sealions and his dinner).
That said, as much as he doesn't want to let on, there is more to him than "all asshole, all the time," and it's why I find his character so fascinating.

I figured it was a good length. It completed the whole "hunting the cockatrice" scene set up in the original pilot, showed us the Daughters for the first time, and set up some kinda plot thread tied to some kinda Prime Directive for the Scoutleaders. Going any further than that would have risked setting up too many plot threads, especially considering it's probably going to be a while before we get Lookouts again.

"IF but some vengeful god would call to me
From up the sky, and laugh: "Thou suffering thing,
Know that thy sorrow is my ecstasy,
That thy love's loss is my hate's profiting!"
Then would I bear, and clench myself, and die,
Steeled by the sense of ire unmerited;
Half-eased, too, that a Powerfuller than I
Had willed and meted me the tears I shed.
But not so. How arrives it joy lies slain,
And why unblooms the best hope ever sown?
--Crass Casualty obstructs the sun and rain,
And dicing Time for gladness casts a moan....
These purblind Doomsters had as readily strown
Blisses about my pilgrimage as pain. "

Naw it's just that the general consensus (which I agreed) was that Lookouts was a bit of a disappointment, and I was like, okay, yeah, but I don't think it's over yet, there's a bit more.

I like it but the second half of page five is a completely disjointed mess. I think he's regaining control for a second and uses it to walk backwards into a car? Initially I thought he was just suddenly crossing a street for no good reason. And then he's taken over again when he's hit only to re-regain control immediately after?

Yeah on consideration I'm kind of glad that PA made this bold, experimental foray into dramatic long-form storytelling so we could see that they aren't really good at it and be that much more grateful when they go back to three panel videogame jokes and like the occasional four comic series about the Merch trying to kill Santa.
Hahaha no of course they're actually going to decide that this new direction is awesome and to keep doing it. It will be just like that one time John Allison said hey I think I'll take my comic and strip out everything that makes it funny or whimsical or charming and instead just make it snide and hella-ass obnoxious and then change my name to Jeph Jacques.

Because it creates a whimsical and light hearted tale yet is deep and dark, and is so over top in seriousness it makes it funny?
I wish they did more of the wandering age.

Hm, yeah, as a PA comic 'Automata' was, well, yeah, pretty much not what I wanted at all.
It was however a far better concept than films like I, Robot, A.I., or whatever other 'ghost in the machine' themed robot movie that has been out in recent years. A roarin' 20s setting with robot dectectives? Sure, why not?

Though I have to wonder at this point who of the cast of It's Walky isn't located near Shortpacked! the store.

Erfworld comics are about smart guys smarting their way out of impossible strategic situations. Book one was Parson stopping an alliance of a bunch of different sides with one city. Book two is gonna be Charlie saving the world from the Arkenpliers.
Naah, though I'd love that, I think that Charlie is much more valuable as an unknown factor in the strategic constellation of erfworld, capable of matching or even surpassing Parson. I think that, while we'll find out more about him, Parson is going to remain the main character. Rather, I think that something's gonna happen to Wanda and Anson, they'll either break off (form a new side) or be defeated and it will yet again be up to Parson to take command.
...
Writing that I actually see the cliche shining through, so that's probably not going to happen... but I stand by my opinion that Charlie=/=Main character.
Regarding the latest story post...
One of the things I love about the comic is that, whenever you drop your guard and begin treating erfworld as nothing but a strategy game, something comes up that makes you realise that, despite the cutesy nature and turn-based warfare, this "world" is as visceral as ours. I cannot possibly predict how Parson will react...

Bwahaha. Oh god. Maggie's my new favorite character.
It's interesting. Charlie has an Arkentool, but he's not siding with the Titanic Mandate side (Arkenpliers and Arkenhammer). He's staying neutral. I have to wonder, though, if he can stay neutral. Will the Royals let him? Or will they force him into a hole, leaving him siding his Arkendish with the other Tools?
Also, are there more Tools, or is it just the three?

Personally, I hope he stays a wild card, because I prefer him that way, but it'll be interesting to see what he does end up doing.

Probably more, they just haven't been found and/or introduced yet.

I honestly can't say I was glad I stuck through Afterstrife to the end - to be totally honest it felt like Star Wars prequels filtered through Bleach's soul society and never really did anything where I was edge-of-my-seat, which is what the climactic ending was supposed to be.

I remember someone suggesting that it was possible for the Arkentools to be randomly "spawned", and only existing for a limited time before despawning if not claimed... While only speculation, it might explain why in "thousands" of turns (as of the last major siege on Transylvito and then some) only three have been found.

It was pointed out to me that the latest Erfworld update (October 16th) was really really creepy. I decided to see for myself. I'll keep the URL around for when anyone mentions xkcd's creepiness again.

I wanted to see what was so creepy about it, but the Erfworld homepage has really opaque webdesign.

Yeah, it was pretty fuggin' creepy, but it was a one time thing, and at least they had the main character say, "That's pretty creepy. And wrong." xkcd is unapologetically creepy on a regular basis.

It would suck if Munroe was an evil genius. I mean, imagine all that... xkcd-ness put into torture techniques instead of webcomics.
Also, going back to Erfworld...
Modern theatre frequently uses "alienation" as a dramatic effect... Its purpose is to stop the audience from identifying and forming emotional connections with the characters and look at the "big picture" instead. I actually thought the erfworld update was quite good, since it not only answered the big glaring question of sex on erf (though there've been several allusions to it), but also brought this sense of creepiness and edginess back... or really, introduced it. It forced the reader to look past the cutesy nature and realize that this is "real" (for a given value of real). And I think that in turn connects with the emotional dilemma Parson's feeling. You get what I'm saying?

Hey it's a comic that doesn't rely on grossing people out.
Also, Pikamina shirt. DO WANT.
I prefered this strip.

That comic would have been better if I hadn't seen something like it before, with the Anti-Spiral as a Pokemon catcher, so the funny that it gets for being "Oh yeah, Beedrill" or whatever is much less.

You know, we need a separate erfworld thread. Partly because it's awesome enough to deserve its own thread, partly because there's a lot to discuss about it...
I'd have made it already, but I'm uncertain whether that'd be acceptable...
On-"topic": Super effective is fairly awesome... though it was better when it began.

Dear XKCD,
