View Full Version : How Are You Beating The Heat?
'Cause I'm sitting here in the dark with all my windows open and the curtains drawn playin' video games. I should go outside at some point, but I'm thinking I'll be burnt to a crisp before noon.

Sticking to basements when possible. While at work I sneak into the manager's office and crank the AC after he leaves.

By it not being very hot here at all. Seriously, it's only, what, 72 degrees at the warmest part of the day. Hurray! It's really nice.
Otherwise, shorts and a shorter haircut.

We have a little AC unit in our apartment, and our complex has a big pool that's open during the summer. ^_^
Also, cheap trick I used to like using is leaving open all your blinds/windows in the evening and all through the night and let everything cool down, then close all of the windows and blinds in the morning before it gets warm and keep them closed as much as you can. If your house is decently insulated, it'll stay pretty nice.
Unless you have allergies, like Nique, then leaving the windows open at night = stuffy and grumpy in the morning. :(

I bought a fan with some special filters in it to combat my grass allergy (of all plants, fucking grass), and it seems to help. Also, look into allergy shots at a local clinic. They basically cured me of my congestion for years.

I find that riding a bike helps cool you off pretty good, as opposed to walking to places you want to go to during the summer. Having layered clothing helps too, I mean, if you're wearing a loose jacket over your t-shirt, the jacket will take most of the heat.
Another way for those who want to stay cool during the summer is to ask your entire neighbourhood to let you borrow their freezers for one night. Use freezer space and plastic containers to freeze water. Make a fortress of ice, or maybe just a chair.
Or just bring a thermos with icy water with you, your choice really.
If you're inside, well, check if your indoor temperature is higher than the temperature in the shade outside. If it is in fact warmer inside, then get out, it'll be cheaper and easier for you, and easier on the environment and all that.

Yeah the pool has been nice. Sometimes a duck will fly into the pool while we're swimming, and well, let's just say on those days, ol' Nique doesn't go hungry.

It's really not too hot here either, just starting to warm up. When it does finally start to heat up, our pool will likely be open to provide us with its mercifully-cool and refreshing water. For the time being, I like to keep my window open and stay in the shade when I'm outside. At night, the window's open again and my covers are half off (because you have to keep at least some decency, even whilst slumbering).

Actually it looks our climates are roughly the same if he's from one of the humid subtropical regions of Brazil, in which case I change my statement to "I see you've lived in a highly air-conditioned bubble for most of your life, Bells".

I am so tempted to chop off all my hair (seriously it's super long) for the summer, but that is like 2 years of growth.

This, and also I am wearing a jacket.
It was designed for people to ski with, but I use it to compensate for my general deficiency of fat and muscle.

Pyros lies in his room with the fan on, curled upon bedsheets napping, until hunger or the promise of someplace cooler can remove him.
There is a careful calculation: Is it worth it to suffer 90+ degrees by having to walk outside and into a car before going to the Mall/Carowinds/Dairy Queen, or is it more worthwhile to walk upstairs, paw open freezer, and shove my head in?

Its too damn hot when it's hot, and it's "5'to rain" the rest of the time. And i don't have an AC on my room but i do have 2 fans for when it get's too hot.
I used to do the "Bowl of water" thing years ago... but to be honest, i never really looked too much into it....

Your body cools down by sweating. The sweat evaporates, which draws energy (in the form of heat) from your skin. Raising the humidity brings the ambient vapor pressure closer to equilibrium, decreasing the rate at which the sweat on your body evaporates. Thus, you feel hot AND damp then.
Any cooling effect you got from that bowl of water was probably a placebo.
The bowl of water method can potentially work, by the way, but only in places with low humidity. So, desert dwellers, you can try it out. (Thanks, Arhra)

Three fans in my room strategically placed for maximum airflow efficiency and a constant supply of otterpops.
Oh gods the air conditioning in my dad's car goes below freezing. It's like stepping out of a freezer into a sauna.

As for some good ol' heat beatin', I have two fans going in my room, one at a time, depending on where I am, 'cause they're both placed PERFECTLY. One for sleeping, one for computin'. And we go to our friend's house often enough, where there is a pool o' awesome.

Celsius is for hookers and fat people.

You know, I'm all for the metric system, I don't mind it, I use it a lot myself, but for some reason, I just can't accept Celsius as a proper measurement. Sure, it has logic on it's side, but it's units are too large and I just hate it.
Anyway, it's still relatively cool here, I think today it made it to the mid 80's and that's still bearable.

I'm the first person to say that logic is overrated, but in stuff like physics and mathematics, logic is pretty much there to keep scientist sane (and to make them do wrong conclusions some times).
Anyway, it's raining down here in Finland. And I was walking there. I'm not sure if it wet, as my jacket is only wet from the front side, but the backside is mostly moisty.
The only logical conclusion there would be that I should have walked longer, but well, I have already said nasty thing about logic, so ha ha you logic, aren't you sad now..

Welp, let's switch gears back to the actual topic, shall we?
One of my favorite ways to 'beat the heat' is thjrough nice tall glasses of ice cold peppermint tea. It's really refreshing and cooling, plus has the added benefit of having no caffeine (and thus lacks diuretic properties). That, and just keeping the air moving is typically enough for me.

Staying hydrated is important. I live in Wisconsin, but my dad lives in the Phoenix valley in Arizona. Oddly, neither of these ever bothered me much, despite the fact I almost never leave the house in shorts and usually dress in a white tee with a shirt open over it (which actually gives the best of both worlds in terms of air cooling and protection from the beating rays of the sun).
However, in St. Louis, whenever it was hot, it was humid. I am not a person to sweat. I had to do a scavenger hunt there, at NIGHT, no less, and was so thoroughly drenched that I had to hang my clothes to dry on a towel rack. The summers there are positively miserable, to the point of people dying. Needless to say, I learned the value of hydration, and any time I went outside, it was with a bottle of Gatorade.
Past that, wear loose clothing and layers. Light colors help. It also helps if you have wind in the area. For staying inside, open the windows when it's cool and close them when it gets hot. If you have a basement, you can go down there. Park your car in the shade if at all possible.

I'm a stick of a man, so warm weather is nothing for me.
The same can't be said for the router my parents use. It's up in the attic which is basically the same as leaving it outside in the shade, and if we don't put an ice pack on it it refuses to hand out IP addresses.

My god this has been a hot English summer. We just have as many windows open as possible, but then this brings in moths. The heat is also killing my laptop, since it keeps overheating and shutting itself down. I'm a little worried that it might do permament damage eventually.

peppermint tea
This reminds me.
One summer we'd always have After Eight knockoffs around, which were very refreshing, but of course full of sugar and fat. And of course we'd drink a lot of water. So one day, must have been a particularly hot one, I thought "man, it would be awesome if you could put the refreshing peppermint taste in water. Kill two birds with one stone. Maybe put some finely chopped peppermint leaves in a jug of water and let it infuse for a while..."
It didn't dawn on me until a few seconds later.

Grab a portable fan and aim it directly on your laptop. It will cool you and it down appreciably.
