So what does the PokeWalker, the portable pedometer/play-device thing that's set to come with every copy of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, exactly do? That question's answered in this week's issue of Famitsu magazine, and it turns out the Walker's about what you figured -- a dinky little novelty that potentially makes monster raising a little easier for you.
Like the Pokemon Pikachu exercise toy of a decade ago, the PokeWalker is meant to be carried around in your pocket, measuring your movements as you walk around. You are allowed to take one of your in-game Pokemon and "take it out" to the PokeWalker via the Nintendo DS's infrared port, which beams the creature to the Walker's little black-and-white screen. You choose a virtual "course" for this Pokemon to walk (some available from the start, others unlocked later), and as you go about your daily business, you earn "watts" with the steps you and it take together. These watts can be exchanged for all kinds of things: extra experience, items (found via Dowsing Machine), or even the ability to catch new wild Pokemon with the Walker.
In tandem with this, HeartGold/SoulSilver also lets you walk around with a Pokemon within the "real" game. Starting with this pair of titles, you've got the option of letting the lead Pokemon in your current hand walk behind you on the game map, instead of simply having your Pokemon in balls all the time. Any creature, from starter to Legendary, can join you in your travels, and it's apparently not just for cosmetics, either -- you can talk with them, and sometimes they'll pick up secret items for you.
HeartGold/SoulSilver is due for a fall Nintendo DS release worldwide.
Oh, hey, more proof this is gonna be the best Pokemon game ever.

Is there a reason they're remaking these specific titles? I haven't played a Pokemon game since the original--is Gold/Silver when the series "peaked" or something?
EDIT: Also is the Pokewalker some sort of thing to combat childhood obesity or something by encouraging exercise (either in actual walking or at least in shaking the pedometer while you sit on the couch and watch TV)?

Hmmm...interesting...And Magus, they remade the origionals way back in 2005-6, if that's what you're asking.
And somehow I can see myself semi-abusing it by hiding it under my sock when I go running. Already wear one when I run anyway...:P

Anyone remember those Pokemon Pikachu pet tamagotchi things that they used to have back in the day? Worked on the same idea anyway. I used to have one back in grade school. That thing was the best outlet for nervous energy there ever was. You know how when you're sitting there and your leg just starts twitching? Yeah, fed that damn Pikachu for weeks off of one day of sitting around doing nothing.
I expect it to be the same for kids with Restless Leg Syndrome just sitting around playing the game.

Is this a DS remake or are they just rereleasing the GB/GBC versions??

They are remaking Gold / Silver. Did you miss all the previous threads about it?
It seems that the cartridges will have an infrared port to connect to the PokéWalker.
New map (pretty much confirms Kanto):

God, seeing the boxart brings back memories...
I'm sure it'll be quite awesome. One thing about the pokemon games is that remakes can actually be worth getting, as they introduce tons of new content, not just better graphics. And I'm sure there's a lot that can be done with G/S.
I won't get it, of course, but that's more a question of time and less one of game quality.
I do a fair amount of walking already, so I am going to use the fuck outta that PokeWalker.
Now when people ask me why I walk/run/jog everywhere, I can respond, "I'm leveling up my goddamn pokemans!"

I really lost interest by the time G/S came out, but, SQUEE! :whee:
Like, seriously, I had one of those Pikchu pets and loved it to death! :D Then it disappeared, somehow reappeared behind the dryer, disappeared again, and one of my friends mysteriously got one. :shifty:
At any rate, the Pokewalker, plus the IR port (seriously, IR technology had so much potential on the GBC, but it was wasted), plus walking Pokemon behind you, plus maybe getting into Gold/Silver (which, essentially, yes, is where I personally feel the series "peaked," if by "peaked," you mean "was the point where it was maybe still acceptable before it got totally ridiculous") is presenting me with an awesome opportunity to actually give the series a chance aside from Red/Blue/Yellow.

That thing about walking around with Pokemon in-game, will that be like what they did with Pikachu in Yellow, only with a not as annoying Pokemon?

Wow, considering that my entire job is basically to spend most of the day walking, I might actually have to get back into Pokemon.

I keep wondering, if you get a huge Pokemon to follow you around ingame, will it be to scale, and therefore make it impossible for you to bring it inside buildings with you because they wouldn't fit through the door?
Because I really want that to happen.

I'm wondering if that pokemon, who follows you, scare some other pokemons away. Because really, if friggin' rattata attacks you, when legendary pokemon follows you, then that friggin' rattata is lunatic.
And about the door thing, the trainer just use pokeball to get his monster inside to slaughter those horrible cool boys who always bullied him/her in school.

I'd love to have a full-sized Lugia following me. :D
Although with stupidly large Pokemon like Onix, this may get prohibitive when accounting that there needs to be room for NPCs. :sweatdrop

A video with Arceus following Gold, plus a sneak peek at the remixed trainer battle music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vshYQq0OYeg&fmt=18).
Seems to me like size is not a matter.

Yeah, but Onix is, what, 28m long? Try expressing that in terms relative to a human in a game. It would be like playing Centipede. XD

At the end of that video.
That egg. Get the event Arceus, and then you get to unhatch the "First Egg" and have an Arceus of your own?
Regulus Tera

No. The next movie event will be giving away an Arceus (in Japan, natch). If you bring that Arceus to that place you will be able to get a level 1 Giratina, Dialga, or Palkia.

Ah, I see.
That is still pretty cool.

So, uh, my question is: What happens with water pokémon? I'm not sure how'd a Tentacruel or a Kingdra following you around would work on land.
...Heck, if you get a Wailord from the next gens it'll just fuck it up more.

I'm guessing they just have water pokémon bounce around behind you and pretend they aren't suffocating.

Well, you could always use fishy stuff for battle on land. The problem was always there; it's finally time to face it.
They swim through the air. I though everyone knew that.

Well, I imagine if there were ever a problem for a water type, you could always put it back in its Pokeball... Man am I ever going to have a million different Pokes following me... I do bait'n'switch method when I train in-game (stick an Exp. Share on it, it'll get 75% of the xp gain providing you only use one other pokemon).
Of course, there IS that nifty pedometer thing that I can always bank xp with...
