Some of you may have seen it. Some of you may have only heard of it in rumor. Either way, you cannot escape this Let's Play.

Lufia 2 is a turn-based RPG where the battles are initiated Earthbound style, at least in dungeons. The combat borrows from Dragon Quest, and there is a lot of puzzle solving blatantly ripped off inspired by Legend of Zelda. The plot is that you are a non-silent protagonist who finds out it is his destiny to... go around the world and fight monsters. Oh, and there are some super beings called Sinistrals, but I doubt they're important.

Chapter One - Mirai teaches NonCon the ropes. NonCon takes over silent protagonist duties for Maxim. (No Game Sound)

Aw man the collaborative LP needs my talents!

Important Note: I have the Jet Helm. I guess it is required to beat Gades, some boss who you can lose to and the story goes on. I ain't losing to him, though.
Ha.

Haha.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah, good luck with that. Next you'll be saying you want to beat the Ancient Dungeon before advancing the story [/Lufia2Reference]

But no seriously, forget beating that Gades. He's quite literally stronger than the final boss. All the Jet Helm is good for is getting to move before he does, and it doesn't help when he can kill half the party every turn (Unless you grind the hell out of your levels)

Kim
08-22-2009, 02:55 PM
Now I want to pull it off out of spite. So is Jet Helm the only item with Sluggish or whatever? Do I even get anything cool for beating him?

Julford Hajime
08-22-2009, 03:07 PM
Your reward for beating him besides rediculous exp and gold (The end bosses give 50000 of each, and I think Gades does here as well) is a sword that breaks the fuck out of the game.

It's slightly, slightly outclassed by endgame equipment, iirc, but I know it has an IP attack that hits an enemy 8 times. Basically, it's a one-hit kill on nearly every boss (I think only the optional bosses can survive) for the rest of the game, if a basic attack alone from the weapon-stronger-than-what-you-should-have-for-90%-of-the-game won't kill them.

And for realz, it's not worth the grinding. I've beaten that boss twice, once on a 4x Exp runthrough, and another on a glitch runthrough (There's a level 0 glitch that I used to give Tia rediculous stats and 999 HP. Makes the fight possible without grinding, but breaks the bejeezus out of the game. Enjoy ten minute loading screens at save points!). On the 4x run, I think I was hovering somewhere around mid-30s just to survive the fight.

When Lufia 2 wants to throw a broken-ass boss at you, it knows what it's doing.

EDIT: At that point, I beleive Jet Helm is the only stat reducer you have for enemies.

SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT STAT UP/DOWN SPELLS: I watched through Chapter 3 so far, and you were confused about how Sluggish worked. Any time a spell increases or decreases a stat, it's by a set percentage (Either 50% or 25%, I can't remember which). Every time that spell is used on that target again, it cuts the gain by half (So a 50% boost/drop the first time would become a 25% boost/drop the second time, 12.5% the third, and so on).

Kim
08-22-2009, 03:11 PM
I have to say... I don't want that sword. If I had it I'd use it, and I don't want to use it. I mean, I'm not afraid to grind to get a really good weapon that lasts a while, but if it OHKOs the bosses, then fuck it. I want at least some challenge.

Julford Hajime
08-22-2009, 03:16 PM
You can obtain the weapon normally through the course of the game if you try the bonus dungeon (It's 100 floors of randomly generated hell, don't do it!), but even then your chances of finding it are slim-to-none on account of the random generating-ness. Also, it might be a treasure you can't even take out of the dungeon, I can't recall (I just remember using it on the boss at the bottom).

*Psst* Look at edit above. I'm too lazy to copy/paste >.>

Kim
08-22-2009, 03:24 PM
Also, feel free to share your thoughts on the LP itself. Good? Bad? Average? Is there anything you'd change or do differently?

Julford Hajime
08-22-2009, 03:53 PM
It's been okay so far. Chapter 3, as you've said yourself in the videos, comes off really dry and uninteresting more or less because you've already had to do the run a bunch of times and lost it from technical problems.

Chapters 1 and 2 were great, though. Lufia 2's a favorite of mine, though, so I have a hard time not liking anything related to it. My bias makes me a non-trustable judge >.>

It's been a long time since I've played that game, but I'm like 90% sure that rows work the same as in every other JRPG ever.

Which is to say, why is your squishy on the front lines and your strongest melee attack/def in the back?

Kim
08-22-2009, 04:25 PM
I want to give a witty response, but I got nothing. I don't think I noticed until Chapter Four that there even were rows, and by then my short term memory was so shit, on account of it being six in the morning, that I forgot before the battle ended.

I kinda wish you had stuck with the Ogre Battle LP.

I also did several LPs on the 'Tube meself, such as SaGa Frontier and BoF2 with a really nice retranslation patch, and am currently slogging my way through Wild Arms and Final Fantasy Tactics, but that's neither here nor there.

I haven't played this game in like forever so I completely forgot about rearranging for rows. My fault, as I could have warned him.

Also I never really gave much thought to beating Gades first time in. He seriously walks up and uses Destruction and that's game, one round, bye. I never gave it much thought (though that you can is very cool).

I wish more games were like that. I mean, you can beat Saturos and Menardi in Golden Sun the first time you meet them, and it just acts like you lost anyway.

Good LP so far, though! I'm considering giving the game a run myself now.

As far as I know you can't actually. Unless you cheat. I may be wrong, but I think not.

As for Gades. Starting with my second playthrough beating him became compulsory. I don't know. It's just that I know I CAN defeat him there... so I do it. Plus I usually get 4x Exp which makes the task much easier.

He's also possible to beat if you don't Grind to the max.
Moderate grinding will do (considering you get 4x exp, which you most likely don't), but the fight will be difficult. Still possible, though.
However, If you just want to play the game without an overpowered sword, it's not worth the effort unless you really love to brag.

EVILNess

He is totally worth killing cause the sword can be taken into the ancient cave. I mean, you really only have to be level 25ish to beat him.

Okay, things are looking so that Mirai will be able to join in again, without loss of video and audio quality, but we'll still lose game sound in those episodes. So, questions...

1. Should I do grinding behind the scenes or have it in the episodes?

2. Do you guys want to rename our Pokemon, and, if possible, any party members?

3. Should I do episodes that are without Mirai still, and have the Plus Mirai episodes be special once in a while things for when he has the time? Or should I only do episodes when he has the time to join in?

4. Should I talk to all the NPCs?

5. How soon is Gades and the Ancient Cave?

A Zarkin' Frood
08-23-2009, 05:27 PM
1. Unless you have a godlike charisma and/or humour, no. Do it behind the scenes. Nothing can make grinding exciting. Except maybe a TRAINING MONTAGE with fitting music.

4. Only if you think you can make it entertaining in a way. You could just as well record talking to all the NPCs and cut out the boring bits, unless you're opposed to that idea for some reason.

5. Gades is in some Tower after the town of Parcelyte If I remember correctly, or maybe the town after that, but it's definitely a tower. And the first one in the game.
The ancient cave is an optional dungeon that resets all your characters levels to 1 and removes all equipment except what you found in blue chests inside the cave. Gades' sword happens to be one of these, even if you don't find it within the cave.
You can visit the Ancient Cave as soon as you aquire the ship. Or perhaps you have the possibility to pay for a ship to travel there, though, I'm not sure anymore if the game actually offers that possibility.

Memories are all blurry, need to play again.

Yes, I'm cheating by looking it up.

Lufia II's Ancient Cave can be found north of Gruberik. In order to get there, you first need to have completed the game up to the point where you can access the Ustark Continent. From either Aleyn or Narcysus, tell Jyad that you want to go to Gruberik (or just warp there if you've already been there) and he'll take you there. Then, exit the town and head to the north.

There's treasures you can find that give you money, you get a shit ton of experience, and you get equipment that you can take out (or bring back down with you) that is of pretty good quality, depending on the level.

Think of it as your one stop shop for grinding equipment and levels.

It's hard as shit, though, 'cause unless you find a spell in a blue chest in there, you can't even take your magic in with you.

Jagos
08-23-2009, 09:03 PM
Just want to emphasize...

You start at level one. No spells, no magic, no armor, No girlfriend, nothing.

If you find it in a blue chest, it's great to have when you go back. If you want to take on the last level, prepare to plan for a FULL day of trying to get to the last level.

If I can beat FFXII's Yiazmat in one sitting, I can probably handle the Ancient Cave. Probably.

Krylo
08-23-2009, 09:36 PM
Nope.

It's like a bajillion levels, and you start at level 1 with no magic, and it scales faster than the actual game. I'm pretty sure you can't even grind, 'cause monsters don't respawn for you.

You're going to need to try a few times, collecting reliable equipment, and even then you'll need to get lucky enough to find a few healing spells. Healing spells are a necessity.

Seriously, it's damn near impossible.

A Zarkin' Frood
08-24-2009, 04:36 AM
[...] you get a shit ton of experience.
Which you don't get to keep when leaving the cave, so yeah.
you start at Level one in the cave, and when you leave it's reset to what it was before.

The cave is more or less the part of the game for those who can't get enough of it after playing through the main story. If you beat the game on New Game+ you can even start an Ancient Cave only game and choose even characters you usually couldn't take into the Cave to accompany you.

I beat it once. On a emulator.
but I've tried several times to beat it with my regular SNES version. It has 99 Levels of randomly generated content. If you're out of luck you won't even find a blue chest in one run, or the item in it won't be of any use.
And since the enemies don't respawn you should beat every enemy on every level of the goddamn dungeon just to be on the safe side. And even then that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be strong enough for the later levels.

So I suggest you save the cave until you've finished the main game.

But Gades' Sword is definitely nice to have for that Dungeon, because it makes the first levels a breeze.

Once in the dungeon, I found myself some new equipment and a Pokemon named Toast. (You guys should rename him.) Couldn't find the motherfucking key to move on though. Help a guy out!

At 0:17 on the last video, you can see a switch. Hit it with an arrow. You should be able to figure out the rest :P

And I said it on one of your videos, but... BLAZE/Toast should be Entei. Because he's one of the few capsule monsters that can easily reach it's higher forms in the game (Most others you get too late), and he's the fire elemental dog. Easily my favorite, though his low GUT stat makes him run away often.

I catched up with the LP now and think it's quite entertaining. Mostly due to nostalgia maybe, or not. I don't know and/or care about/for the reason/s.

Yeah, and that's actually very obvious HA.
But since I already tried to record a Let's Play myself I know how you tend to miss details like this while coming up with shit to say while walking past that crucial detail at least ten times. I've done that too with a much simpler game (The Guardian Legend).

(In my defense I was playing it stupidly because I go into noob mode when Let's Playing. Won't make that mistake again.) Then we have the best training montage ever.

So I started playing again. Just beat Gades, on a normal 1x exp play through, no glitching, off the cart.

To help you out if you decide to kick his ass for the LP, here's my levels:
Maxis-32
Guy-31
Selan-30
Tia-32

I barely made it through. Tia and Selan would be left in the teens, maybe twenties, sometimes even single digits after Gades attacked. This was with multiple layers of bravery on to increase my defense. It also took two sluggishes off the jet helm, plus a fake from the speed ring, and a fleet from from the kite shield for each character before we were able to move before Gades, so the first few rounds were extremely touch and go. Had to use two miracles, actually.

I'd suggest getting up another couple levels, and farming armor goblins for a second jet helm so you can drop two sluggishes in the first round and maybe with a few levels under your belt that plus a single fake can get you up to speed (or at least get TIA up to speed, so she can do some healing).

Anyway, for the battle we got 50k xp and gp, along with Gades Sword. Gades Sword has 200 ATP and the IP Octo-Strike to attack a single enemy eight times. It can be equipped by Guy.

After the battle Maxim Tia and Selan each gained one level. Guy gained two. Somehow. Musta been really close to level or something.

Oh, and at those levels Tia is pretty much useless except for the fact that she's fast. Selan can heal better than she can, and do more damage, and... yeah.

OOOOONNNNE MORE THING!

Your fire type has much better stats than your neutral type at equal level, except for GUTS, but for pets that just means your neutral type won't run away. If you've done any grinding at all you shouldn't have a problem, either way. I've only had Blaze run away after bosses have severely damaged him.

Edit: And I forgot that Guy leaves your party right after and takes all his shit with him. Damn, now I can't give it to Dekar when I get him.

Edit 2: Your best place for xp per hour for the grind is right outside of Parcelyte. You can occassionally fight groups of red cubes. They have about 200 agility and tend to run, but if they don't run they only have 10 hp and can be hurt by magic. They're worth 2222 xp a piece. The best xp you can get otherwise is about half that, and isn't as reliable, in Gades tower. Armor goblins are also common there--and they have a chance to drop the Jet Helm.

The spider boss is the first asshole-boss in the game.
It's pretty tough. You might want to kill his companions a bit more often, but that's up to you. And use the item attacks more frequently, especially Tia's aqua whip one in that case.

But after a training Montage it should be impossible to lose anyway, unless you losing is crucial to the plot. Which it isn't.

I've been bulldozing everything... but then I have a policy of "if it moves it dies". Doesn't matter how many times I re-enter an area.

I find that it keeps you at a pretty good (slightly high) level without feeling overly grindy.

Because she's the caster, I'm always inclined to assume the only good thing she can do is cast Strong, Gale, or Flash, even though I've seen several times before that that isn't the case. :/ I'll probably have Guy use Immobilize more too, since that seemed to do a fair amount of damage to all foes, and I'm hoping it might at least paralyze the mini-spiders if it doesn't kill them.

But after a training Montage it should be impossible to lose anyway, unless you losing is crucial to the plot. Which it isn't.

Well, Entei evolved and everyone is about four levels higher than they were. I think I should be good to go.

I'll contest that with a respawning 4 skeleton fight worth 600 exp and with Selan and Tia casting a hit-all Spark on them being able to ORKO (Actually, you might have Fireball then, which'd guarantee it).

I think there's one of those in Gades Tower, and if not I remember seeing it in that "Figure out the time" puzzle from SE Tower.

Also, I'm pretty sure those spiders are weak to fire. I know the Skeletons are in that same dungeon.

You can two hit/one round the skeletons, but the ghouls will generally survive, and there's usually only one skeleton.

Further the respawning fight is random between a 4 or 5 skeleton/ghoul combo for roughly 600 xp down to a single skeleton or ghoul worth 150 or less.

I'll admit that due to the 'instant respawn' of that fight it may still be roughly equivalent xp per hour, but it's also boring as fuck. I was using it for awhile, before I remembered the red cubes and decided 'fuck this'.

I said the boss is an asshole, didn't I?
But you made it after all.
Maybe it goes against your hero of justice thing, but if someone's paralyzed and you can't heal them, just let them die and revive them. Especially if you are going to use a miracle on them after the fight anyways. Even though you could've just taken him to the church to get him revived. (Or an Inn, I don't know if churches do that anymore)

Also: I think there's only one more dungeon before Gades tower now, but I don't remember all the insignificant dungeons like the Camu Tower, which you should go back to, because despite what you are led to believe, it didn't collapse. And you can take what's in the three treasure chests (with some decent armor if I remember correctly) on the top level. I think I should have told you that earlier. But the contents may still be useful.

While I'm at it, the time puzzle was in that tower too, right? I don't remember if you did it, or what you get for it. But if you set the time to 12:00 you get something. (I think the hint on the tablet is something like "when a new day starts" translated directly from what I vaguely remember from the German version.)

More advice: Go to the ancient cave asap.

The blue chest gear? Fuckin' spiff.

There's, for instance, a sword in there for Selan that has an attack power of 400 (!!). Remember Gades Blade? The one that was all like "Oh man that's so OP"? Yeah, that had an ATP of a mere 200. You can also get a snow sword, again, for Selan, with an ATP of something like 360 or 340, but it also has 60 or 40 DFP (better than most armor), a water gauntlet for her shield spot with 75 defense on it (about double the best shield I've been able to get for her so far), a jewel that gives thirty AGI--enough to make Guy faster than most enemies.

The list goes on.

Basically you can get end game equipment early on in there.

And judging by the trouble you had with that spider, it'd probably help you out a lot.

I can never decide whether I like the Sinistral battle sprites better in Lufia 1 or Lufia 2. In Lufia 1 they ooze power, but the Lufia 2 ones feel more titanic. The builkier build gives them more gravity.

So you get to keep the blue chest gear? I thought someone was saying you didn't. :/

Krylo

So you get to keep the blue chest gear? I thought someone was saying you didn't. :/

Blue chest gear you keep. Everything else stays in the dungeon.

Edit:

You're set to level one upon entering with all your equipment, items, and spells removed--except for equipment found in blue chests within the cave (the Gades Sword counts toward this, even if you didn't find it there). This, unfortunately, includes your tools and your reset spell. Even your capsule monsters are devolved. On each level there's a variety of enemies and chests, which you use to gain experience and gear up for lower levels. Most items are in red chests, which means that they will disappear when you leave the cave. Red chest items are usually of relatively congruent quality to what you might find normally at the character levels you're currently at, with the occasional far weaker or far stronger piece (like finding a thunder axe on the first level, or a battle knife on the 35th). These, again, disappear when you leave.

However, on rare occasion. Perhaps once every 10 levels, if you're lucky, you will find a blue chest. These blue chests have gear that is equivalent to end game items, or close to it, and they can be brought in and out of the cave as you like, being used in the overworld and in the cave itself on future explorations.

In this way, every foray into the cave makes you more powerful for the next. It also gives you a reason to enter it--the gear.

Unfortunately there's still a heavy level of luck involved in you getting to the bottom, and the game definitely rewards different gear in the cave than outside. For instance, outside? You want high defense on your armor. Inside? You'll find yourself wearing a shitty tough hide well into the 30s, maybe even the 40s, because you haven't found a healing spell yet, and that re-energize IP ability is just more useful than an extra 60 DFP when it's your only method of keeping your team alive. And if you don't find armor with a healing IP or some healing magic? Well... then you're just kinda fucked.

Not to mention that healing magic itself isn't even that useful, because there's no way to regenerate MP other than IP abilities on armor (silva armor, mirak plate, magic bikini) or high-magics and ex-magics found sporadically in chests.

You'll find that you'll never cast attack magic, because it's just not worth the MP cost when you can't easily regenerate it.

So yeah, Ancient Cave--totally different game.

Also, that 400 ATP sword? Holy elemental. That makes it even better. Especially considering Gades Sword can't hurt undead, while the blaze sword does double + damage to them. There are lots of undead in the game.

Kim

Okay, so since I can get the three treasure chests plus a hidden one from that tower I thought had collapsed after I got teleported out, should I do that behind the scenes before the next episode, or during?

Some tips for the ancient cave, the best party I can think of for it is Arty, Guy, Selan, and Maxim, so that gives you a time frame for when your party is best for doing it. I personally find that being fast outweighs being strong in that place, because going first has saved my life so many times while doing the Ancient Cave.

There is also some blue quest equipment you can bring down with you from the regular world, mainly jewels, being the Earth Jewel, Twist Jewel, Gloom Jewel, Thundo Jewel, Gorgan Rock, Water Jewel, Catfish Jewel, Camu Jewel, and Spido Jewel. The Catfish Jewel is dropped by the catfish boss, and if you got it then hey it has a great IP to get you through the lower levels.

If you can collect Twist Jewels before you go in I highly suggest you do it. They are amazing.

BE warned though, the Ancient Cave is much more difficult than the normal game and filming a descent would be taxing on your harddrive since a single run can take HOURS

I personally find that being fast outweighs being strong in that place, because going first has saved my life so many times while doing the Ancient Cave.

I personally prefer going in with Dekar and shifting around twist jewels and (if I can get them) speed rings to make sure Guy or Dekar are able to keep up, or to make Selan or Maxim faster than the fastest enemies as necessary.

Speed is all well and good in there, but Arty isn't all the great without magic, and if you can go first but don't kill anything it's kind of pointless.

Then again I'm not 100% on whether he can equip the snow sword or blaze sword, so maybe he's not entirely useless after a few partial runs.

That's also the earliest party you can go in with, which has it's own advantages, as well (like taking the blue chest ownage out into the game world sooner).

Kim

Where do I get twist jewels?

Also, with the Ancient Cave, my plan is to use save states so that I don't have to do it in one sitting, but maybe having a backup save at the beginning that I go to if I die.

Krylo

If you die in the ancient cave they just boot you to the exit without being able to take your spiffy blue chest items that you found that trip out with you.

There is a lizard in the Divine Shrine after you get Arty. Otherwise you have to collect them from the monsters in the ancient cave. Its B-something Lizard, and they do appear in the AC if you don't want to wait for Arty.

As for me I prefer having Arty over Dekar, but I can see the merits in using Dekar for sure. It's just two different ways to approach the same problem.

Actually, if you wanna record the AC you might just wanna skip it until you have beaten the game. Gift Mode allows you to take anyone into the cave with you, and the AC can be frustrating when you get down to the 90s and get owned by two Gold Dragons (Which drop a Blue chest item incidentally) I am not exaggerating when I say the AC can take HOURS. Hell, it can take DAYS.

It definitely isn't meant to be tackled in a single go down, you are meant to get blue chest items and then Providence out as as soon as you find one and then start over so you can keep your blue chest items.

The Ancient Cave has one cool option - you unlock just "Ancient Cave Mode" when you beat the game and can pick it like it was part of New Game/New Game Plus.

A Zarkin' Frood
08-29-2009, 04:31 AM
But didn't that just "Ancient Cave Mode" only become unlocked after beating a New Game+ and is called Gift? You could still cheat to get that, but as far as I know the only benefit for that is that you can choose the party. Incidentally the party that is, in my opinion, the best for the Cave is the one you should have when you're first able to enter the Cave. The Endgame Party isn't bad at all for it as well. The main advantage of the first party, though, is, that it has Guy and Dekar, the baddest dudes in the game's world.

As great as the music may be, fighting the same damn monster for the whateverxillionth time is, in my opinion, a good bit more annoying, like it was the case in the Ancient Tower.
But maybe that's just me, since the first thing I get bored of in any JRPG are the battles. Except in Persona Games and SMT Nocturne for whatever reason.

Thats because you are too busy going "Shit! SHIT! NOOOOO, NOT HAMA! NOOOOO, YOU MUDO USING FUCKERS!" to get tired of fighting the same enemies.

A Zarkin' Frood
08-31-2009, 07:01 AM
It might be that or the games force you to do other things than just attack, making the battles slightly more interesting. For me at least.
In contrast to Lufia, where I always only rushed through the dungeons, only fighting monsters that directly blocked my path, so I can beat the boss already. That made the boss fights less boring because my Level was lower than it usually would have been.

But yeah, if you don't want to hyperspeed through the battles I don't mind. I just thought it might be nice to have the possibility to quasi-skip the third fight against the same monster in the same room for NonCon who's actually playing the game.

I just noticed that about 70 % of this game are filler.
I can't believe it took me that long to find out. I can't wait for the part of the game where you just visit a sequence of dungeons for the sole reason of visiting dungeons. Then suddenly things start to happen again.

Boss fight, Entei digivolves, bodysnatchers are afoot, and this game has the most unimaginative names in gaming history.

Another boss fight, some Dekar awesomeness, and a puzzle gets mostly skipped over after taking me half an hour.

A Zarkin' Frood

Instead of mashing A in battles you could just hold L (or I think maybe it was X or Y... some button like that) to just attack with everyone.

I'll watch the remaining 35 minutes of chapter 11 later. When I'm done eating in case you care.

Edit: Watched it now. It's really entertaining to watch you struggling with puzzles even after you cut a, supposedly large chunk, of it and, I assume, looking the solution up. I think I always solved the puzzle differently, though. On my 23234 playthroughs, that is. Well, I keep forgetting details like Idura's part in the story. I don't know if there's the big climatic showdown with him somewhere or if he just stops appearing.

A Zarkin' Frood

I think this dungeon is about the worst offender when it comes to being filler you'll find in the game. Because all it does is really just being thrown into the game at that point instead of somewhere else where it would make more sense.
Almost as if the developers made too much dungeons for the game, but didn't want to cut anything.

Firedog McFlamelizard (the one you have now) is the best Pokemon in the game, I think. It's the only one I ever used, except the carrot one time. Which I did because I thought it was cool to have stuff killed by a carrot.
I don't remember whether he was particularly good/bad/ugly or not. I never cared for capsule monsters' stats that much as long as they killed something with an overpowered attack often enough.

I don't care for Cid as much as I did Dekar, though perhaps not being able to afford spells for him yet is too blame. I saw some bitchin' spells. Also, feel free to make fun of my stupidity this episode. I certainly did.

A Zarkin' Frood

I love how the game text implies you spent a few days attempting to solve that puzzle.

There are two noteworthy sidequests in the game.
One is the Ancient cave of 99 randomly generated levels that may or may not kill you.
The other is to collect all the dragon eggs 10000 times to get some bonuses and fight some boss if you've done it often enough.
I don't think there's anything else that would qualify as a sidequest.

I remember spending hours trying to get that old guy in Randomtown2 to take my tea from Randomtown1, though. The game is built in a way that makes you think there's more to do.
Almost as if they forgot to implement the actual sidequests before the release.

But yeah, the warrior lady is Selan.

I'm pretty sure you can reach that three chests through a secret passage that might be hidden in the walls behind one of those bushes to the left. Just a guess, but I'm still pretty sure. and I don't see any other way.
There's no need going back to the door at the end of the dungeon by the way. It's locked.

Have fun with the next filler dungeon. I played through this game several times and... wow... I don't even remember half of this filler.

I guess Nostalgia drowned out these parts of the game.
But at least you've met some plot-relevant NPCs.

And as far as I remember the game is getting closer to the end. I think there are only a few more dungeons after you ditch Lexis (which, I reckon, is pretty soon) and welcome Artea, androgynous elf, into your party

Apologies for the long gap between updates, yet again. This doesn't seem to be all that popular of an LP, so motivating myself is kinda hard, plus I swore off jRPGs for a few months recently. Anywho, I am going to finish this LP, I promise. It's just taking longer than it should.

So, our latest dungeon is the Divine Shrine, where you move about from pillar to pillar. That's really all there is to it. This is most of a solution for one of them. It's enough to solve it without problems. There's another I forgot to snap a pic of, but none of these are really all that hard.

Anywho, to finish this section up once you have the key (I didn't show how to get it cuz it's honestly the easiest key to find out of all the dungeons so far), go back up those stairs I gave the walkthrough for before, move some pots, and fall down a hole. Congratulations!

And that's how I beat the WORST. DUNGEON. EVER.

Dungeon was really easy, no boss fight, and then it gives you a stat boost through the door behind Artea. Really, just a major disappointment on so many levels.

Yeah I wasn't a big fan of that fight.

Though you've finally got The Party, which means you're getting closer to the epic end of the game. Though I might be biased based on my track record of loving Lufia II's music.

No Mirai, you're pretty much right. Starting from the moment you finally get Dual Blade all the way through the final button press is pretty damn epic.

The moments leading up to it are rather bizarre, confusing, AND completely unexplained, but hey the ending segment itself makes me tear up every time just from the levels of badass displayed, so I'd have to say they got THAT right at least.

A video update? Blasphemy. (http://www.viddler.com/explore/NonCon/videos/27/)

The audio quality kinda sucks. I won't be using that mic again, that's for certain. Anywhos, I don't really know what the point of that dungeon was, or where I go next, but at least I'm done with it.

EDIT: I managed to throw together a version with better audio. You can either wait for that, which will be up later tonight, or just watch this one.

EDIT2: I'm going to try and do another update later tonight as well. Anyone who'll be available a couple hours from now and wants to chip in with some commentary, send me a PM and we can hook up with Skype.

Watching you in that submarine hurt my brain.

You should go to a church to uncurse that Evil Jewel so you can unequip it if desired
Also: There's a bow that attacks all enemies, I don't think it's the cursed one, though.

The bow that attacks all enemies would be the "Arty Bow" named after the elf in the party. :3

It's okay, they pretty much spoil the whole thing in the opening of Lufia and the Fortress of Doom. Just load that up and BOOM 3 minutes of gameplay fills in most of your questions.

That's vaguely half-true and you know it. Lufia 1's prologue contains the most basic aspects of the ending to Lufia 2, and none of the stuff that made it, y'know, GOOD.

But yes, PLEASE finish this, Noncon. You'll be a better catgirl-ish boy for it.

It's almost over anyway. I remember that dragon dungeon being one of the very last. And it MIGHT be the next one.
On the other hand, it has some pretty wicked puzzles as well as the optional puzzle of despair.

I haven't watched that one yet, but if he's at Dragon Mountain, he still has five or six more dungeons yet. Granted, several of them (The last three in particular) are about five minutes + boss fight long, but it counts.

Darren and I just finished recording the next ep and fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you FUCK YOU.

Man, I knew I forgot to warn you about something!

But yeah, that seems to be the typical reaction to that puzzle. It was my reaction back in... '97? '98? I'unno, whenever I bought the game, and it was my brothers reaction two years later when he tried the game out.

Of course, the people watching this are kind of jerks, so maybe they're getting a laugh at our suffering.
Yeah. I totally am :P

Also, SISSY. You looked up the solution instead of spending two hours toiling constantly at the puzzle as it slowly destroyed your mind. You didn't let the puzzle toy with you, move after agonizing move, as you regretted ever daring the world's toughest puzzle. Not that I'm bitter.

EDIT: And for the record, Lizard Blow is incredibly useful. Why? "Endgame is 90% dragon"

ONE MORE THING EDIT: You're going to need these directions in the next video. You will know when the time is right:
-Walk up until you hit a wall (the screen doesn't move)
-Take 3 steps left or right
-Go up until you hit another wall
-Take again three steps to the right or left (other side as before)
-Up

I don't know how you could confuse the mountain full of dragons for anything but the dragon dungeon.

I remember solving that puzzle way before my family even had a computer. Let alone internet access.
It's not like I didn't look it up somewhere, though. Because that's pretty much the correct solution.

WHAT (http://www.viddler.com/explore/NonCon/videos/31/)

Unfortunately Darren wasn't there for the whole thing, but... something went horribly horribly wrong and you all owe me some sort of explanation.

Julford Hajime
05-18-2010, 06:44 AM
I'm not sure what I'm explaining for, but here's a shot.

You're using a US ROM, and all copies of the US game have glitches that screw up the game graphically but don't technically affect gameplay (Hey, you don't NEED to see the screen to play!). Anywho, it's why parts of equipment names stay if you equip something with a shorter name (For example, changing from Steel Sword to Aqua Whip would display Aqua Whiprd) and why certain rooms are all glitchy. Also, why the Gratze Kingdom got renamed the '3y kingdom. And a few other things like the level 0 glitch (DON'T DO IT), and broken items, and other things I forgot.

Why does it do this? I dunno. My understanding is that the original Jap game AND the European releases all work fine, and there are no graphical glitches like that. They just REALLY screwed something up when they ported the game to the US.

If it makes you feel any better, the physical cartridges are all like that, too. That's why I knew you'd need the help getting through the one room :P

ONE MORE THING! (Dammit I'm gonna have to change my avatar if I keep saying that): You haven't reached the ultra-super-special-awesome part yet. You haven't actually gotten Dual Blade :P

A Zarkin' Frood
05-18-2010, 01:11 PM
Maybe you should've started the game with a European rom.
Mostly to pretend everyone speaks with a British accent. But also to WHAT THE FUCK!? THEY SOLD THIS GAME LIKE THAT IN THE US?

On the upside: The game's already heading towards the better. It'll probably be over soon. They can't throw in another filler dungeon, right? I played the game at least four or five times and I keep forgetting all the filler dungeons.

The ending is nothing I would've expected in an SNES game when I was a kid.

Kim

Okay, a bit longer episode. It's uploading now, and should be watchable in a few hours, but I thought I would post now because it's starting to look like either the next episode or the one after will be the final episode. As such, I have some questions.

Question One: How long is Doom Island?

Question Two: Is Doom Island the final dungeon?

Question Three: If the answer to question two is yes, do you guys want the next episode to be a marathon of Doom Island, finishing the rest of the game in a single sitting?

Also, any other ideas on stuff I should do for the final episode would be welcomed.

Julford Hajime
05-20-2010, 06:54 PM
I'll have to see the episode first to know exactly how close you are (Or you can just say what the last couple things you did/saw were), but I can still answer your questions.

1. Doom Island is really short. There are no puzzles, no monsters roaming about, and the only off-beat paths lead to treasure chests with items like Miracles in them (Actually, I think they're the ONLY thing in the chests)

2. Yes.

3. This one depends on how close you actually are. There is a "Point of no return" before you even enter the island, and as I said it's rather short. If you're really REALLY close, then yeah, go for it. If you still haven't finished the three short (I said five minutes before, but hey hyperbole) dungeons between the tank and Doom Island, though... Aw fuck it go for it. There's really VERY little left.

Kim
05-20-2010, 06:55 PM
I'm just beyond the point of no return, I think. I'm actually on the island, and just saw THE BEST THING EVER. We stopped recording the moment we were on the island.

EDIT: Actually, since this will be my first actually completed LP, and I seem to have gotten into a groove where I update regularly instead of once every two months, is there any game you guys would want me to do next? Anyone who suggests Pokemon dies horribly.

Julford Hajime
05-20-2010, 07:10 PM
Haha yup, you did indeed see the best thing ever. "I've forgotten how to miss" is still my favorite quote from this game.

But yeah, you have maybe half an hour or so left at until you finish the game. Though the end credits are a good while (10-15 minutes), as well.

OH! One of the remaining fights in the game likes to spam instant-death spells on the entire party, and it has a good success rate, to boot. Unless you wanna re-do EVERYTHING you did before getting Dual Blade (The last save point is in the last tower), make sure you're putting those save states to good use.

EDIT: And make sure you equip Dual Blade, if the game doesn't do that for ya. It's easily Maxim's best weapon because it's IP skill lets him demolish EVERYTHING.

Yay for final dungeon finally.

EDIT: Actually, since this will be my first actually completed LP, and I seem to have gotten into a groove where I update regularly instead of once every two months, is there any game you guys would want me to do next? Anyone who suggests Pokemon dies horribly. Not an RPG, at least not one that's as long as Lufia again, though doing it with a partner made it a lot more entertaining.

Demon's Crest for the SNES, may be worth considering. Recently, when I played Order of Ecclesia it sorta reminded me of that one. So maybe if you liked Order of Ecclesia (given you played it) you might enjoy this. Not sure if it's very let's playable (
There's no real plot to comment on in a witty and/or insightful way, and next to no character interaction, I think there's only one non-boss NPC outside of the shops, there's also a good chance to run into one of the non-true endings for first time players, and actually for everyone who doesn't go for 100%), but maybe you'd like to play it anyway If you haven't already. Because it's good. At least I say that. Also rather short compared to your average jRPG and modern Metroidvanias.

It's finally over! (http://www.viddler.com/explore/NonCon/videos/38/)

This is like my favorite episode. I wish every episode was like this one.

EDIT: But yeah, next LP is Megaman. Got a few episodes recorded already. Will probably start a thread later. It looks like Mirai gets Megaman 2 while I find better programs to do everything with.
