Games in the series so far:
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2/PSP/DS)
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (PS2/PSP)
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (PS3)
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? (PSP)

Prinny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSz1zxA6d5Q

The Disgaea games are like Final Fantasy Tactics/Fire Emblem, but there are plenty of differences. The level cap is 9999 (not a typo), stats can reach into the billions, you can level up items, add special effects to your weapons and armor, make any character can learn ALMOST everything (monsters can't use weapon skills, and humanoids can't use monster skills), multiple endings, and New Game+.

But don't worry, getting a character to LV9999 takes less time than leveling up to LV99 in say, Final Fantasy, or making the perfect team in Pokemon. This is because there are tons of tricks to make leveling really easy and quicker. Second, hardly any grinding is needed for the main game, however, the post-game dungeons will require your level and stats to be stupidly high. However, leveling is actually fun, compared to Final Fantasy or Pokemon where it's just tedious.

As for the Prinny game, it's a platformer, but it's like the old-school platformers in the fact that it's really really crazy hard.

The games do not take themselves seriously. There are some dramatic moments, but there's hardly a time where something goofy isn't going on. Also, there's some fanservice, but considering that you guys play Final Fantasy games/watch Gurren Lagann I doubt you guys consider that to be a bad thing.

Worthy of a play.

You're forgetting to mention reincarnation. That makes your actual level cap go a lot higher than 9999. I don't remember the actual number, but I'm sure it's more than double that.

And there's also modifying units to your tastes depending on the mission through reincarnation. I remember messing around on one of my units, just reincarnating it into a prinny, then a monster, then a prinny, then a Maijin whenever it hit 1000.

But they're good games. I've gotten >200 hours clocked on Disgaea 2, maybe >150 on Disgaea 1, and at least 50 on Prinny. Never got 3, since I just got a PS3 myself.

Your level can't go beyond 9999, but reincarnation does increase your stats by a lot.

Theoretical level cap, rather. The game keeps this under a "Reincarnation level" stat somewhere. After you max that, reincarnation's useless, and you've got a crazy-powerful unit.

So technically, the level cap is definitely higher than 9999.

AH! this brings back memories! I had the first game but my PS2 died in the middle of it. I might just use my Xmas money to get it for a PSP...GO MIDBOSS!

You guys are making me regret not bringing my PSP home with me now...

I have the first two games and I really loved them. The leveling can get a little tedious for me though.
