View Full Version : A concept

Since I'm bad with introductions, and running low on sleep, I'll get to the point:
An RP based entirely around TV Tropes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage).
If I was to pull it off I'd need help. One or two Co-GM's to help. Someone who can help me to decide what is a good pun and what is a bad one, where the stealth ones are... Defining badass/awesome... Things that can easily escape someone who misses out all the good stuff in life.
Yeah...
Before I/we get anywhere with this, I would like to see who'd be in and who'd be out.
For now, just post if you're interested... or something like that...

I'm interested, but I'd like to know more about how it would work out.

Well, the concept is VERY interesting and I spend tons of time on that website.
I imagine there would be some conflicting settings like horror/drama missed with romance or comedy especially if someone starts using tropes that were used mainly in the OLD days of the 50s television... or mixing realistic tropes with the ones that comes from animations or otherwise defy every law of science and meta-science...
But yeah, this sort of thing has my attention...

Did... did somebody just posit a game where my dangerous genre savviness will be the most useful thing anyone has?

The exact setting would change from thread to thread. And the contradictive tropes you mention would act like counterskills.
I'd like to know more about how it would work out.
Aside from that I'll need someone(or even better: two someones), to help me out with GMing this sort of thing, the system to be used is already there...
For the most part anyway...
Details to come when we hit the character creation stage(aka: I get my two Co-GM's and some players).

I would play anything like this in a heart beat.
Although how it would actually work is a little strange to imagine, it seems a good bit of fun regardless. So i'm certainly in.

Ok, I'm in.
And if you don't get any offers, then I may volunteer to co-gm. Although this seems preferable to be a player in.

Looks like the interest died down on this...
Hmmm... What can I share to renew it...
Hmmm...
OH! I know!
Character creation and development!
A character is created by combining Tropes and some regular stuff.
First step is giving the character a name, general appearence and stuff.
Second step, the fun one, is picking Tropes.
Generally, you just pick ones that'd fit the character you have in mind. Those will be converted into skills, abilities, traits, equipment...
Some examples:
Genre Savvy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GenreSavvy) [Skill / Instant]: By spending a Trope point, the character may negate a single Trope for a single turn.
Impossibly Cool Clothes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ImpossiblyCoolClothes) [Flavor / Free]: Character clothes may defy any laws, real or fictional.
Badass (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Badass) : Character can now earn and store Badass points.
[B]Crowning Moment of Awesome (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/CrowningMomentOfAwesome?from=Main.CrowningMomentOf Awesome) [Skill / Regular]: You may spend all your remaining Plot points on any Badass actions(even if you don't have the tropes necessary). The character will act as if it still had any Plot points for a few more turns.
---
Four examples a little low, but should give the idea.
Initial Trope set is 6 Tropes.
Some tropes are Free, those can be taken over the limit as long as you wish.
Some tropes cannot be attached to a character or are reserved for the bad guys/NPC's, those you can't take.
You'll get new tropes from time to time. For how it works, they don't have to be logically connected with the actual character development...
Tropes are divided to regulars, and Badass.
Regular tropes are your main skills, they use Trope points to activate.
Badass Tropes are more powerful, but use a less common energy type: Badass points.
This brings us to an interesting issue.
Stats & Combat.
Stats: There are four.
Plot points: Think of those as your HP, if the story can no longer strech the Willing Suspension of Disbelief (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief) in your favor, you're Put on a Bus (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PutOnABus).
Trope points: Those are your skill points. You use them to pay up for being awesome. Using skills is a vital part of fighting bosses, as they're immune to regular attacks.
Badass points: Those are your more powerfull skill points. You use them to pay up for being incredibly awesome. In addition to activating Badass tropes, you can use them for Charged Attacks (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ChargedAttack) even if you don't have the trope related.
Battle points: This is your stamina. You use it to fend off stuff that doen't deserve to see how awesome you are. Human speak they're the amount of basic attacks you can make.
They are recovered on different occasione each.
Plot recovers when the Plot sees fit. You are awarded those basing on how much your character is expected to need at the moment.
Trope points recover on a individual accomplishment basis. If your character is interesting to watch while it dose stuff, it'll have plenty of ocasions to do it.
Badass points are restored to the number equal to the number of Badass Tropes you have every time the team finishes a quest or another challenge.
You get just enough of those to make sure people don't forget why you are a Badass.
Battle points are restored before each battle to a set number based on who your character is in the group.
Combat: Is done in turns.
The definition of a turn isn't however a single post with a set number of actions.
During your turn, you may take any amount of actions. It is however recommended to dose actions wisely. You must remember that you only have a limited amount of various actions to make, and then you're out of any other points to spend, you start spending Plot points. It's also important because the bad guys get an amount of actions for their turn equal to the one the team did.
To explain the issue better, I'll simulate a round of combat without flavor text.
Heroes round 1:
Lancer attacks Mook#1
Lancer attacks Mook#2
Lancer attacks Mook#3
Hero uses Naming your Attacks on Big Bad
4 actions total.
Mook#1 is defeated.
Mook#2 is defeated.
Mook#3 is defeated.
Big Bad loses a plot point.
Enemy round 1: 4 actions
Big Bad uses Not So Different on Hero
Big bad attacks Lancer
Big bad attacks Lancer
Big bad attacks Lancer
Lancer is defeated
Hero is affected by Heroic BSOD
Other than the simple attack(deduces one Plot point from the target) which is a Regular action, you need to consult the description of the Trope used for how long it takes.
Usually it's either Instant(counts as 0 actions) or Double(2 actions).
Special combat actions which aren't exactly tropes(or don't use trope points) but ultimately lead to someone taking damage(like causing a boulder to smash some mooks) simply consume an amount of Battle points and Actions that covers their result.

That'd cover about all I have for now...

I didn't actually expect anyone to make a profile yet. What I posted was meant to encourage people who dropped by but didn't say anything to give this a chance.
Also, Chekhov's Gun, or any Chekhov related trope for that matter, is restricted because of being plot important(that is, if this RP ever makes a run).

Damn, that was an important part of Crazy Awesome!
I guess I'll get to work on replacing it. i also have most abilities worked out, I'll post them later.

I'm the one to make tropes into abilities.
One of the perks of being a GM.
But it'll all be for nothing if I can't get at least a Five Man Band and a Co-GM anyway...
Finding people will be very hard anyway since apparently almost everyone decided that they want to be GM's at the same time I did...
