View Full Version : Mixing the concept of an abridged series with a Let's Play? DMC3? It'll never work!

I recently got a USB capture device for just about € 15.
To test it out I recorded myself playing DMC3 and talked while doing it to see if a potential video LP would be possible. Unfortunately I can't record game sound AND my voice, but yeah. So I recorded it in the style of a Let's Play without much of an intention to release it. But, aside from the facts that I still have trouble finding words in a foreign language (english, that is) and it's pretty hard to come up with stuff to say while playing a game which demands much of your attention AND it's my first time doing this, it turned out rather okay. So I considered releasing it. Then I noticed I skipped all the cutscenes. OH NO!

You can't make a Let's Play without ridiculing the plot or at least go with it. I could just record it again, but I suck at repeating myself. So I got an idea. I recorded the cutscenes and spoofed them. Yeah, the editing sucks hard and so does my humor and you all know that, but I couldn't care any less.

It also looks like shit I mean haha. Has anyone of you even tried editing 3D or life action footage to fit your needs?

Anyway, I got one question: Would you be in favor of me continuing this as a Let's Play with the Abridged cutscenes?
I played and recorded two more levels after I decided to maybe make this a Let's Play, but before I do all the editing (yeah, that's what I call it) and stuff, which is time consuming, I want to be sure that at least some people will pretend to watch it. Otherwise this would be a waste of E-Peen enlargement pills. But I think I could really impove my talking thing with this.

I know the volume's low. If you don't want to turn your speakers up to 11 you shouldn't watch this.

"Now this is personal." I lol'd. Hard. I didn't notice too much of a problem with the volume, either. This is pretty good so far, and I think you should continue it.

... not sure what to think about this exactly.
On the one hand you are making me rage on the inside by creating yet ANOTHER abridged series, on the OTHER hand what you are doing is kinda like Zelda Abridged which should actually be considered a machinima series than an abridged series and yet it fails at being both somehow which ALSO causes me to rage hard, and on the other OTHER hand you are trying something unique that really hasn't been tried before with an Abridged Series which is kinda cool.

I am willing to let you live long enough to continue to show me what you can do with the concept...

Can you try recording yourself playing and then add your comments and abridged-ness? I think it could work better that way, since you can also have the game audio too.

No, that wont work since there's actual voice acting in the game's cutscenes and that would interfere with my abridging. Maybe some out of context hilarity but that's not what I'm going for.
I don't want to do it with the ingame stuff because that would mean I have to do my commentary afterwards. I already did that once with Contra and it didn't end well. It was so bad I didn't release it. Yes worse than this.

Second Level.

I think I sound a bit more confident in the third one.
I decided to upload the vids as far as recorded (third level) to see If people like it enough, otherwise I'll just play the game like that.

EDIT: Does anyone know how to get rid of that funky stuff in the beginning of both videos?

Last two videos. Unless people want me to continue.
I'm also open to all kinds of criticism.
Except if it's about the game sound. I'd love to have game sound in the gameplay segments myself, but then I'd have to use rather unstable software to do so.

Level 3:
I think I improved on both the cutscene spoofing and the Let's Play part itself, if only a bit.
I sped up certain parts of the video in order to make it shorter than 10 minutes. I didn't succeed so I split it into the level and the boss fight. If I continue this I might even cut out the more boring parts of the gameplay. Like walking down a hallway for five minutes or something.

Anyway, here are the videos:
Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gh3t-iP2s8)
Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoASzwMEqiY) (Boss fight)

EDIT: What the hell? Sound quality sucks after uploading.

Dear members of the NPF,
Dear people who watched this,

I have to apologize. I released these videos under the foolish assumption that anyone wanted to see them. I was wrong. Horribly wrong. And I am sorry.
Sorry that I will not stop this because I found a liking in doing this.

Enclosed you'll find the two videos of Level 4 with now better sound, more crappy abridged cutscenes (may be longer than original cutscenes) and a slightly more enthusiastic sounding me. Though, to be honest, this is just because I recorded my voice louder now.

I hope to not have angered you too much.

eternal love from the bottom of my heart

P.S.: No, I have no idea if this would qualify as something close to an English business letter or something.
