View Full Version : Doctor Who is a pretty cool guy. He time travels and doesn't afraid of anything.

So far I'm pretty sure Blink is the best Doctor Who episode I've seen. It has me on the edge of my seat and all these nifty little ideas like the Easter Egg in the DVD and what the weeping angels are is just great. Dalek comes close for being an awesome introduction for them, and I'm also really quite fond of Gridlock simply for how utterly depressing it is. I bawled.

Oh that's right, you just started watching. Man I just I could watch those episodes for the first time again. Have you gotten to Silence in the Library yet?

Not yet I don't think. I think the next episode is a three part season finale thing, so I'm pretty excited for that.

EDIT: Sec's design in Evolution of the Daleks was kinda dumb, in my opinion, but I loved him as a character.

Yeah Blink's a pretty great episode, definately one of the best. Though the 3 parter you're on now is also pretty good, mainly because of The Master.

I've actually been rewatching all these lately as well, though I just got to season 4 which I don't own, because for some reason it has a ludicrously high price tag in every shop I see it in (I am NOT paying 70 fucking pounds for a single season dvd set, not when the others were like £30). I hope the price has dropped a bit since the last time I saw it now.

Sometimes I think some of their alien designs are shoutouts to the era when they didn't have a budget.

The Girl in the Fireplace > The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances > Blink > Time Crash > Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead

But The Curse of Fatal Death > Any other Moffat story.

Also, to all RTD haters: read The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter. It won't make you an RTD believer, but it will at least convince you the guy did something good (despite being a lazy bum at times).

I'm at Last of the Time Lords. First off, The Master is batshit insane and that makes him awesome. Totally rad.

Secondly, did the humans turn themselves into those things to survive, or did The Master turn them into those?

Told you he was awesome. Easily the best villain in the series

As for the rest; I think it was probably the Master who did it. He basically promised them a way to escape oblivion, by going back in time and creating the paradox machine, and from there they could survive another 100 trillion years encased in near inpregnable armour, sort of Dalek style.

Eh, not really. There've been plenty of non-crappy designs in the new series. There've been a few really nice looking ones too, plus they all look better in motion nowadays - no more Cybermen who just move like normal people except very slowly. I'm mostly talking about the "okay, here's some face paint and tin foil" designs.

I kind of assumed the Toclafane had created themselves before meeting The Master, to survive the conditions of living in a dead universe, rather than to survive into the XXIst century.

Man, Jon Pertwee was a badarse Doctor. He did karate and Inferno was a better alternate dimensions story than Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel. I still like Turn Left more, though.

Currently watching The Ambassadors of Death after an unsuccessful try to get into the first Dalek serial. Pacing was horrible during the sixties.

I really am not liking Donna Noble. She's annoying, and she does that "Make a complete ass of myself" stuff that made me hate Rose during the werewolf episode.

Donna Noble is miles better than Series 2 Rose.

New Doctor Who Magazine, new information about Series 5: (http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com/2010/02/episode-titles-revealed.html)

The series begins with The Eleventh Hour written by Moffat himself and is believed to follow directly on from the regeneration in The End of Time. Episode Two is The Beast Below also by Moffat with Episode Three seeing the return of the Doctor's greatest foe in Victory of the Daleks by Mark Gatiss.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, Moffat also confirmed a number of guest stars for the new series coming to the UK in the Spring.

For Doctor Who she played Alison Cheney, a companion of the Doctor in the 2003 webcast, Scream of the Shalka.

Bill Paterson joins Episode Three. The Scottish actor's long career features appearances in The Killing Fields, A Private Function, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Chaplin, Richard III, Miss Potter and Creation. Okay, really liking Donna now. Feeling very meh about this whole season so far, though. The Doctor's Daughter was kind of an okay episode, but the ending sucked for about a billion different reasons.

I thought Gridlock had a nice start but then GIANT CRABS.

Unfortunately I can say this about a fair few episodes where they started with an interesting premise but it goes off the rails or something pretty contrived gets stuck in.

I'd say even Silence in the Library falls under that. The first half was excellent but for the second... it's not to say the ending was necessarily bad, but it wasn't as good as it could have been. Part of what made the Vashta Nerada so creepy was the fact they were a threat that you couldn't reason with.

I think in the new series Donna was the best companion so far. She actually did stuff and seeing her develop was very interesting.

Eh, I loved Silence in the Library. Any complaints I have with it are instantly compensated by it having Donna and HOLY CRAP the Vashta Nerada are a terrifying thing to contemplate when you're lying in bed and can't sleep.

I think the thing that made that element specially bad, as far as I'm concerned, was the DEVOLUSHION! stuff. I mean, it's a time travel show, for freak's sake. They didn't have to go: "well, we need a random established alien from the series and we need to cheaply explain away why they're just a mindless/unsignificant plot contrivance." Just say it's the past and be done with it.

So I was watching Silence in the Library with my younger brother, and it occurs to me that River Song is going to meet Jack Harkness probably. Reason I think so is she has his sonic blaster that he used in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

I guess it makes sense, since Jack first showed up in a Moffat episode, but the immortality thing didn't sound like a Moffat thing to me, so I didn't think he'd keep him in Moffat Who.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk
02-21-2010, 08:50 AM
I think it's more likely that Jacks blaster was left inside the TARDIS during Parting of the Ways, seeing as Jack didn't have it on him during the Dalek attack and hasn't used it since. Most likely River gets it from the Doctor at some point.
