Shortly before "Avatar" came out, director James Cameron told MTV that he has a larger story in mind for the movie's universe. "We'll follow Jake and Neytiri," he said. "I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I haven't really put any serious work into writing a script."

At that point, there was nothing official to announce. People knew the movie was going to make money -- this is James Cameron we're talking about -- but no one could know just what a monumental success "Avatar" would become. Now that we know? Cameron's much more open to discussing what's next.

So, the initial flam has vanished and now the movie is out for quite some time. It already made enough money to justify years of whoring. So a Trilogy isn't really a insane idea from a Business point of view.

But... Avatar 2... can this movie hit the same high note twice? It's clearly going to happen on Pandora again, the visuals will likely be all the same (i'm guessing Underground and Underwater scenes), but is there really more stuff to unravel in this story?

What do you guys think? Avatar 2 sounds like a movie you should see?

Eh, there may be some tribal conflict in the second movie that needs sorting out ending with the human corporation coming back with some big-ass army forcing the Navi to band together again. The Third movie could be about the occupation that follows the war where the Navi lose because lets face it, the planet-moon may be all lively and cool but it's nothing an orbital bombardment can't fix. So the third movie could be about a revolt of the Navi complete with a reawakening of the planet to gloriously colorful things.

I bet Jake and Neyti travel to Earth rescue their Pterodactyls from poachers.

Is it bad that when I saw this I immediately thought "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (the cartoon, not that craptacular-looking movie M. Night Shyamanlanaman is coming out with) despite having thoroughly enjoyed J.C.'s Avatar?

Also, I doubt a sequel will have the same impact. The story wasn't that great to begin with, so I don't see how expanding on it would be a good thing.

The movie's story was solid enough to hold the movie together from start to finish. I really can't expect much more than that form a 2 hours and a half movie... the narrative was well connected, there were no real "dry" passages and the flow of the story was great.

The story itself might not be fantastic. But sometimes good is good enough.

I just don't see how they could possibly make a second movie... the humans return and the first movie happens again, but this time Jake has a Son or something?

Or they improve the Avatar project to create an equaly powerfull race as the Navi and come back to take over their planet?

Or they use what they learned to revive earth's Ecosystem and kidnap jake and some other navi's and we get to see a movie on earth?

There are a few options... i just don't think they are good enough....

I didn't fully realize that it wasn't "Avatar: The Last Airbender" until I read your post.

I was all "Wait, the movie came out already? Why haven't I hard about this yet?

How about in the sequel they just go all Empire on the audience's collective ass? Nature starts revolting against the Navi, tribes no longer want to be united under a foreign leader, and after its all gone to hell you see Earth ships descending from the sky but this time you see that the humans are packing some serious heat. Credits start rolling just as you see the impact set in.

Sweet, maybe this time they can steer away from the silly "avatar" gimmick and just make it about nifty giant cat-people and the crazy flying rocks they inhabit.

...

He had better success with T2. But I just don't see how this one could be topped with its ending.

Won't the sequel have to cost like 500 million dollars and be four hours long or something? I hate when they start talking about a sequel a month after the movie comes out, you know they're just saying that because it made a billion dollars. They don't have anything planned, probably not even a basic story at this point. They just KNOW there will be a sequel eventually because they want more money, actually thinking up a plot comes second. The same thing happened after I saw District 9, the next day there was some pointless news blurb about how there is going to be a sequel, but nothing about its plot or characters or anything has been planned yet. Pointless to even talk about it.
