In the same interview in which Toriyama explains the linearity of Final Fantasy XIII (http://www.thelostgamer.com/2010/02/03/toriyama-explains-reasons-for-final-fantasy-xiii-linearity/), he also mentioned the lack of towns was due to the fact that in producing HD quality graphics it would take far too much time for the developers to create.

Alongside such comments, Yoshinori Kitase also explains that such a problem relates to being unable to currently consider the continual requests for a Final Fantasy 7 remake.

He explains, “This issue is related to whether a Final Fantasy 7 remake will happen or not. It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time.”

I'm calling bullshit on the grounds that Final Fantasy XIV exists and will probably have all the towns and fields and whatnot FFXIII lacked.

Give them a break. They were busy rendering 38 gigs of cutscenes.

Everything will be forgiven if they remake FFVII on DS. For the lulz.

That has an entirely different team, though, and it's only just been announced. The thing's probably been in production for a few years already and it'll be a few more before it comes out. Games take a good five years these days.

Aside from that, people tolerate much lower poly-counts in MMOs than single-player games.

So Kitase's team is composed of lazy crack-snorting monkeys? Sounds reasonable to me.

Final Fantasy XIII was also in production for a long time. It started development in 2005, maybe 2004.

Actually it has a planned release date of this year in both the US and Japan. So no go there.

As for your point about graphics... Fuck graphics. Graphics are cool, but once they start fucking over my gameplay they become substantially less cool.

Is it really? I thought it-

Fuck, that's right, it's 2010 now. Never mind. :sweatdrop

Blah, we need news about how something that was just a stupid rumor ISN'T going to happen? Hey, guys, there's also not going to be a new Ogre Battle: In the Lap of the Gods game, either. Let's talk about that, because THAT is a crime, okay?

I figured the point of it was more that Square, apart from being lazy, is more worried about SUPAH GRAFIKS YEAH than about the gameplay. You know, deciding that the game looking pretty was more important than freedom from a ball-crushingly linear path, more important than towns, more important than seamless transitions into battle, and who knows what else the game being REALLY PRETTY GUYS OKAY was more important than to them.

Would you mind not titling your threads in internet meme pidgin anymore? That'd be really swell. Thanks.

I like the thought of not having a remake. They don't do FF games like they used to and remaking a classic one with today's mindset wouldn't do anything to improve it.

How is it harder to make towns then it is to make one giant city? I don't understand Square's excuses sometimes :(

If you make one giant city you can get by with making four or five linked areas half the size of what you'd have accepted as a regular town in the "old days" and equipping them with massively impressive backgrounds that give you the illusion that you're only ever running around in ~3% of the entire thing [see also: Archades, Imperial City of]. Whereas if you go with towns you have to make ten or fifteen or however many separate areas that are somewhat visually distinct from each other.

And "Old Days" Town was pretty much the shops and inn with about 4 or 5 other buildings. I really don't think It would be that much more work for Square to design more towns. Even the FF VII, VIII and IX towns on the PS weren't that large. They had 4 big cities plus a bunch of small towns in IX. Is it really that harder to do that in HD?
