View Full Version : Add random quotes feature for the forums.

I have seen some pretty insane stuff said here. Stuff so crazy it should be put into a list and added to a program that would randomly make one of the quotes appear at the bottom of the page. Just like The Dink Network. (http://www.dinknetwork.com/?force=1) Look around, and refresh the page as many times as you want.
Please consider this heavily.

I'm drunk, as always, but I can almost see merit in this idea.

He just provided a quote for your hopeful service. Be happy.
I kind of like it, but honestly? It might be more trouble than it's worth. Unless you want completely random quotes, someone with access to the forum software will have to keep some master list updated. Last I checked we were a bit short on that front. Other than that, I'm not very familiar with vBulletin, but I'm fairly certain that someone would have to add that little bit in manually. Which, again, is a bit above and beyond what our mods are expected to do, and Pierre doesn't really spend an awful lot of time here.
I mean, if I'm totally off base on the difficulty level, and it'd be a 5-minute thing, then I'm all for it. I just see it being a bit of an endeavour.

No, you're pretty right in how difficult it would be, Eltar.
Changing stuff like that isn't easy, and I don't think any of our current admins even actually know how.

This is the NPF, Synk!
So... yeah, no. Not really.

I have a pretty good idea but yeah, I'd have to read up on the details. We'd need a quote database and a piece of code that grabs a random quote and displays it on the front page whenever it's reloaded. Whether this is feasible depends largely on how complex that piece of code needs to be and how we'd need to implement it. Also on if we could find a place to host the database, if we can find enough good quotes, if Fuitad or Brian throw a fit at the thought of it and if we feel able to maintain this database over a considerable length of time.

A lot of stuff would be funny taken out of context even if it wasn't extremely funny in context.

We have a sort of NPF database, that wiki. We could technically populate it with things other than COM;COL (Though I don't see why you'd want to, having already reached the epitome of good taste)...
Though yeah, it'd take a lot of work. I mean, even assuming the entire code bit would work out fine, we'd need one or several users who decide what goes in, and what doesn't, and a team that actually looks for quotes. Alternately, we just have one user whose PM box gets flooded by suggestions and recommendations.
...
Alternately, what about combining this with the "Rep" system? When a post gets repped, it goes into the database, if it's of a certain length and without pictures there's a chance it'll be displayed. We have one user with access to the database, who trawls through the hilarity every few days and removes everything that's not deemed to be awesome enough.
...
It might work... But
a) I have no idea how these things work
and
b) it's probably more effort than it'd ever be worth.

I don't know.
This just seems like a lot of work to go through just so that people can see how awesome I am without reading threads.

In the discussion about Lev's NPF Universe idea recently we pretty much all agreed that we'd like to have reputation do nothing more than it currently does, i.e. make green boxes appear.
I mean, even assuming the entire code bit would work out fine, we'd need one or several users who decide what goes in, and what doesn't, and a team that actually looks for quotes.
Yeah, setting that up sounds like that's the point where this whole "probably more effort than it'd ever be worth" thing you mentioned comes in.
Honestly the most effort I'd be prepared to go to, if we could work out the code and if we were going to do this, would be a call-out every few months along the lines of "okay, updating the database this Sunday, send in quotes!" And then I'd just put in everything people send because coming up with "funny/not funny" guidelines that are fine with everyone sounds like a massive, headache-inducing bloody waste of time and also completely impossible.

I'd be happy to help look for quotes, and I'm sure if you ask the Dink Network maintainer how it works (I think it's redink1, and he has his e-mail displayed.), he might be happy to let you know about it and how to set it up.

EVERYONE is cool enough to submit. It's the half-baked idea of a Mirai Gen and Nikose, and instead of thinking it out, we just made the thing and bought a domain name. As long as it's up, everyone can use it!

You opened my eyes (http://nuklearpedia.com/doku.php?id=npf_quotes). Just don't tell me there already was a thing like this and I didn't find it in my ten seconds long search.
I'm in favor of that whole quote thing, by the way. In case it can be implemented. That would be cool.

Use the wiki page to compile what you can, and maybe if we can get someone with some kind of talent on board for that whole 'auto-image generator' bullshit, I'll host the software for it and it can be sized small enough to not be a deterrent for signatures?
Was any of that english?

As long as it's not connected with Drama. As in, nobody gets pissy because their magnificent masterpieces of humor are nowhere to be seen, while that other guy's rants on beards and Chrono Trigger are everywhere. But then again, everyone can edit, so you can post your own quotes if you think they deserve it.
Nikose Tyris
02-09-2010, 04:09 PM
I actually have a button for that. It's called "Ban" and it works on there. Before that happens, a PM to Meister would probably go, confirming that he feels it was necessary. Offsite drama brought here, is already a standing issue in the rules.
Meister
02-09-2010, 04:13 PM
Hey who you ban or not ban on your site is entirely your and definitely not my business. :p
Soon as any drama resulting from such appears here we'll deal with it. But, y'know, like Geminex said it's a wiki, if I really feel my quotes are underrepresented I can go ahead and edit in a hundred or two.

I have actually seen this feature used on other forums, sans wiki. As far as I know, it's not too hard to implement, as I personally know the admin who set it up on one forum, and he only would do it if it was -reasonably- simple, I think.

How would we freaks survive in public without a way to vent our psychotic rambling in our free time?
(Said by rpgdemon but the quote system here is confusing)
I'MMA STAB YOU IN THE FACE.
Calm down, let's handle this in a proper fashion. Both of you will be given a pair of scissors and incendiary ammunition, you will each walk 3.5 steps northeast, turn toward eachother, and then attack when a green car passes by. Winner will get to keep the loser's shoelaces.

As for how the idea was received, let me sum up the thread for you.
Crowd 1: Might be cool, but way too much work.
Crowd 2: Fuck that, who do you think we are, Jesus?
Crowd 3: Hey, this might be possible.
I think what's gonna happen is that Meister's gonna discuss it with the people in charge, it'll get turned down and we'll just open a page of awesome quotes on the wiki (http://nuklearpedia.com/doku.php).

Sounds almost like something I did two days ago (http://nuklearpedia.com/doku.php?id=npf_quotes). And no one cared to contribute. I mean, seriously, it's the reason I added Nikose's quote and scratched the "noteworthy" part.

Just the quote tags gets you a box, the username in the tags gets you a "posted by" note. If you want to quote multiple posts, click the multiquote button on each post, right next to the regular quote button, then hit the quote button on any of those posts and crop/edit/rearrange each quote as desired. Works across thread pages, too!
