I'm looking into buying a used PSP, and I'm wondering if there's any significant advantages/disadvantages between versions. In particular, looking at the stats on Wikipedia, I don't see what the difference is between the 2000 and 3000 versions. Obviously I don't want the Go, but basically, what generation should I be looking for?

What kind of games are you playing?
IIRC, main thing was about the software, which made it more difficult to "hack" the PSP in the later versions. But if all you're doing is playing games, there won't be much that you should be worried about, save looks.

Aside from battery life rumors that I've heard/read, the supposed high res/HD screen the 3000 has complete with brighter back led, and the 4000 being UMD driveless, with a hard drive built in there really isn't any major differences between the 1000, 2000(slim), 3000(bright), and 4000(go) PSPs

There are also hardware differences that - last time I checked the "scene" - make certain versions of the Slim, and all versions of the Go, unable to work with custom firmware.
The 1000 (the "fat") is heavier and has more utility tools (like using the IR port as an a universal remote), and is also the easiest to manage firmware-wise, while the Slim can be connected to your TV, which I like for using it as a ghetto DVR machine. The Slim can use the "fat" batteries, which allows for substantially more play time due to the Slim's reduced power requirements, but the battery door can't be used with a fat battery and the battery can slip out if you're not careful.
I've only ever used a Slim, and I like it, especially the aforementioned ability to hook it up to your TV for a better movie-watching experience (doesn't work for playing games unless you have a certain kind of TV that I'm not sure about). The fat has its benefits too. Last I heard the Go can't be hacked yet, but you're not interested in one of those yet anyway.
