View Full Version : Whatcha watchin'?

Because I'm watching several things and it's much more convenient to just post in one thread for all of them instead of posting in their individual threads or starting new ones for each one that doesn't have a thread already.

So I just finished all the available episodes of new Doctor Who. Waters of Mars was amazing, and my only complaint is I think he should have failed to save all of them because he can't beat time or something...

The End of Time was watchable, but hardly worthy of being Tennant's last episode. Also, they should have kept Gallifrey and the Daleks and everything else free somehow so that Moffat could pretty much just use whatever he wanted from the original series and whatnot, rather than having to come up with a nonsense reason for how the Daleks are back yet again.

I'm two episodes into Katanagatari and loving it. The episodes are each an hour long, which is awesome, the art style is nifty, and the ending theme has a bitchin' violin. The villain in the first episode is annoying, but other than that I have no real complaints. The plot is about a master of a swordless style and a strategest for the emperor collecting twelve legendary swords, and it looks like they'll maintain a pace of a sword an episode, so the plot isn't chugging slowly along. I also like the fact that they cut out the whole bullshit of "ARE THEY GONNA END UP TOGETHER" by having them decide they're in love with each other in the first episode.

Durarara!! continues to be simply great, and I'm loving the characters. Selty has a lot more personality than I expected she would. I really don't have much to say about it because it is that good. Anything I said would be stating the obvious.

I am also watching the second season of Junjou Romantica. The art style kind of bugs me in that the characters' lips are huge and whenever they yell their mouths are trapezoids. I also grow weary at times at some of the characters for being such terrible boyfriends to other characters, Misaki being especially guilty of this, but I like it. It's strangely addictive, funny, and I gotta love how pretty much any relationship problem in the show at some point is resolved through gay sex.

I'm still continuing with my own Doctor Who/Torchwood marathon. Just finished season 4 and currently half way through Childeren of Earth. I have a slight problem though in that I'm still missing The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead. I may have to go back to Amazon to find them.

Once these are done I have the entire series boxset of Blackadder to start on, which I found for £20 recently.

Should keep me going for a while.

Katanagatari is so good that they have to spread it out to one episode a month or Honshu would sink into the Sea of Japan. Also, it's about how to write a story, which is fun for me. I wonder if they're going to stick with this new ending every episode thing.

FMA: Bros Before Hos continues to be an entertaining 30 minutes a week, even though I already know what's going to happen.

Hidamari x☆☆☆ is Hidamari. If you don't know, then you won't care.

Durarara is pretty cool, but I think I need to rewatch what I've seen, since I "wasn't paying attention."

One Piece continues to amuse me. Got up to the start of the Chopper The Blue Nosed Reindeer arc, so it's been kinda slow going for me, I guess.

For some reason I still watch Family Guy and the like, but I flimsily(As in not really) justify it with the fact that American Dad actually makes a point to set itself apart from Family Guy.

I'll hush up before I reveal how horribly low my standards are.

I remembered that I've been watching Clannad just before I went to work and it's been driving me mad all day because it's so important that you guys know every cartoon I watch. Anyways, starting After Story tonight. It should be depressing and terrible good.

Maybe I should just get a MAL, but I'm afraid of slipping down the slope and having a facebook, blog, twitter, checking my email, etc.

Also, Ponyo's been sitting on my comp for a week, but I want to watch that one with my sis.

MuMu, you know how a horror film, at the end of the day, is just supposed to be scary, and screw everything else? That's Ponyo, except cute instead of scary.

I learned how to make origami goldfish because of it, though, so I'm not saying it's bad.

Abuse of italics, GO!

Taking an initial look at the next Super Sentai series, Goseiger. It's got a really weird look to it, like they combined Timeranger/Power Rangers Time Force with Dairanger (the series the Thunder Zords came from) and threw in a bit of Dynaman (old stuff) for good measure, with possibly a hint of Dekaranger/Power Rangers SPD.

On the other hand, they might be able to port it, given that they managed with Go-onger as Power Rangers RPM, and I really didn't much care for those uniforms, nor did I really care for the SPD uniforms until I actually saw them in action. Shinkenger was beyond salvage due to the entire thing being plastered with Kanji, but it seems that the series is taking a more severe, angular look with the costumes again, so depending on what kids find cool in the next couple years (hopefully not the crap we grew up on as little shits, because that was pretty damn awful and now it's going to be dated and awful), we'll either get the new series, or they'll go bankrupt for trying to recycle something that wasn't even that good in the 90s.

Edit: So, actually, the new costumes look REALLY good in action. I mean scarily good. There's no excuse not to bring this one over in 2011. In fact, there's no reason to re-film any of the battle footage like they had to for Jungle Fury. It's amazingly choreographed and, quite frankly, the blue ranger is a total badass. Validly. As in he is so badass that his "team attack" is just him being totally badass. Literally. The guy is awesome and has fuck-all to prove to anyone, allowing him to focus on just being naturally awesome.

Edit Edit: I'll just post this. It's too early to have a sub, but anyone with a passing interest should watch it. http://www.veoh.com/search/videos/q/goseiger#watch%3Dv19813291s4Bx4GkF

Finished Kure-Nai yesterday

This show is seriously one of my favorite shows of all time and anyone and everyone should watch it... Twice.

I remembered that I've been watching Clannad just before I went to work and it's been driving me mad all day because it's so important that you guys know every cartoon I watch. Anyways, starting After Story tonight. It should be depressing and terrible good.

So, can you sell me on Clannad? I don't really know anything about it, other than that it's popular, and I didn't know if it was good popular or bad popular so yeah...

So, can you sell me on Clannad? I don't really know anything about it, other than that it's popular, and I didn't know if it was good popular or bad popular so yeah...I'm not a big fan of selling people on anything (except Dokapon Kingdom for some reason), but I'll give some thoughts on the show. As you may or may not know, it's based on a dating game/visual novel, so there are a lot more girls than guys and the story arcs seem to be based on the various routes of the novel. I'd say that the writers weaved it together pretty well, though, so it's not super-transparent. As for the content of the show, it's mostly about getting over tragedy and such. It can pull on your heart-strings. When it's not trying to make you cry, it's fairly standard slap-stick comedy made amusing by decent animation and Sunohara's over-the-top voice acting. Oh, and there's some B-story about a girl in a world with no one else that _mike says will make sense by the end of the penultimate episode.

So, uh, yeah, it's pretty, the story clips along at a nice pace, the tragedy stuff is predictable but still works, and the main character's buddy has a funny voice and does funny things. If you don't enjoy it by the end of Fuko's arc, then drop it.

As for my more personal reactions to what I've seen of After Story (by the way, you'll have to watch that too, Noncon), lol subtle Fist of the North Star reference and oh god that thing with the cat was sad.

Edit: Oh, wait, I forgot that you didn't like Nanoha. You probably won't like Clannad because your heart does not beat.

Just watched the first ep of Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, and it's pretty decent so far. The whole thing with Voyeur bleeding to death was funny, and Hideyoshi Kinoshita is my favorite male character in the history of high school animu. "Why was I the only one who got a transformation sequence?" And Voyeur and his summon are snapping pictures.

House - Still hanging on. At the end of this season, I may quit watching it...

Lost - The time for questions is neverending.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Steel Runt Brotherhood - I gotta say, this is pretty awesome.

Oo kami ka ku Hassaku - Does this seriously not have arcs? People die if they are killed? I... I am interested.

Aqua Teen Foods Monster - Just took a turn for the shitful, as Aqua Teen is always in danger of doing. Guess I'm not one to pass up Aqua Teen if it's served up to me on a silver platter, but their credibility is almost gone at this point.

Archer - It's okay. It's no Frisky Dingo but I'll watch it. And since when did Hulu decide not working on Linux was such a fantastic new direction?

Man I feel like such a prototypical American in this thread. You guys are all mentioning anime series and I can count the number of anime episodes I've watched on one hand. (It's not even a matter of lack of interest, it's really a matter of complete lack of knowledge of the subject matter...like a gamer who has absolutely no clue how to play a JRPG, stumbling about questions like What's a Final Fantasy or why are they attacking in turns.)

As for what I'm watching:

*Lost. Really it's the one show I consistently make time for on a weekly basis, and for good reason. Yeah, it has its moments of cheap exploitation, but I'm like a crack addict when it comes to Lost. I can't get enough.
It helps that, despite the crazy mythology in the series, the actors are just so talented. Seriously, the quality of the characters makes up for the lack of quality of some plot twists. I love Terry O'Quinn, Micheal Emerson, Josh Holloway and Daniel Dae Kim's performances in particular.
To a lesser but still notable extent, I'm also a fan of Henry Ian Cusick, Naveen Andrews and Nestor Carbonell. Strangely, Lost is one of those shows where I've generally found the male actors significantly more talented than the female actresses. Whether that's just because that's the way the predominantly-male TPTB have written 'em, or whether it's the fault of the actresses themselves, I don't really know.

*Futurama. Every twelve to eighteen months I go back and I watch this show's episodes in their order of release. It's that time again. It serves as a nice distraction from my studies. I love the TV episodes but never got into any of the DVD "movie" releases, for whatever reason.

*The Colbert Report. These days I prefer it vastly over the Daily Show, though Jon Stewart still has occasional moments of brilliance. Colbert just seems to have been more consistent in quality lately. I find Stewart best when he's on point -- snarky, yes, dry and witty, but dead serious in his analyses, like when he recently blasted the Democratic party for wilting away during their supermajority -- and that's a rarity in his comedy routine, whereas I prefer Colbert when he's acting like a ludicrous blowhard, and he's always playing the part.

*Glee. New episodes are coming back soon: I'm looking forward to it.

*It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Again, this shouldn't really count because new episodes aren't being released at the moment, but every year I do make time in my schedule for the gang at Paddy's.

*Zombieland. A movie, not a television series, but I picked it up on DVD recently, bought some popcorn, watched it with a friend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Though Woody Harrelson single-handedly made the movie. Without him, it's a bust.

It might have something to do with the series being Evangeline Lilly's first (and apparently last) major series so she doesn't have anywhere near the experience in acting that someone like Terry O'Quinn does. I do agree though that the males do tend to out act any of the females in the scene, but Yunjin Kim is of noteworthy mention, since she usually acts just as well as any of the males on the show.

Not quite true.
Micheal Emerson and Terry O'Quinn duel as actors as if they were Gods commanding legions of lesser souls into battle.
And it's a beautiful sight to witness.

EDIT: Seriously you could give Micheal and Terry any argument between any two characters on any script, written by any man or woman, and those two would transform the scene into something beyond the comprehension of the likes of Shakespeare.
Name your least favorite movie of all time, replace the head actors with Micheal and Terry, and imagine them saying the dialogue in their all-too-deliciously-suspenseful way. It's bliss.

In fact I think the Henry Gale subplot might be the best subplot of the entire series, and that's in no small part because of Emerson.

Let's see now...

The Daily Show - I'm still waiting for the next Jim Kramer to walk on stage. Jon Stewart is very good at pointing out the stupidities of others' actions.

The Colbert Report - Of course, this is the jelly to Stewart's peanut butter in the Comedy Central sandwich. Lately he's been losing some of his ability to stay in character for his bits.

The Late Late Show - As of recently, Conan O'Brien has been getting a lot of attention. Since my timeslot for that period is consumed by Colbert, I typically end up switching over to Craig Ferguson for my secondary late night entertainment. The guy is a fantastic comedian, and far superior to that of the robot NBC put in place named Jimmy Fallon. Admittedly, if Conan were still doing the Late Night show, I'd probably be watching him. What really impressed me, however, was the sheer intelligence of Craig Ferguson. His interview last night with Stephen Fry was simply excellent, and I'm not even sure if it was a rerun, but I don't care. It was that good.

Woo... got off to a bit of a rant there. Anyways...

Heroes - By god, I'm clinging to life for this show, because I want it to work. It's just becoming way too emo for my tastes.

Chuck - God dammit, you screwed it up! The thing that made this show brilliant was the dynamic contrast of the characters! Making Chuck an actual spy has fucked that contrast in the ass, and now you have Kristen Kreuk hanging around as a sidekick and sucking face with him? UR DOIN' IT WRONG.

Smallville - At this point, I just want to see how the series will end. I think they've done just about everything they can do with a college-aged Superman.

House - I grow tired of them rehashing old subjects, but the psychopathy episode was pretty damn cool.

Pokemon: Galactic Battle - Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking: "WTF?" Well, I've been on the whole pokemon kick lately, and I saw this when I was browsing through the guide on my TV. On a whim, I decided "what the hell". As it turns out, they took away the deus ex machina factor, which actually made me pay attention to the show. Ash got his ass kicked in a 6 on 6 battle by some super-serious emo dude, and they actually implemented the game mechanics in the episode (pikachu getting burned, light screen transfer). So yeah, I'm watching that now.

Hockey, because I live and breathe that sport. Speedskating, because I've always been kind of interested. Figure skating, my best friend growing up was a figure skater and Elvis Stojko was one of my heroes. Curling, because I've been curling since I was 10. Also, I watch the women's too. Partially because I used to go to the rec center where Sandra Schmirler worked, partially because I've met Cheryl Bernard and she's a super nice lady, but mostly because I keep eyeing up Britain's skip. Yeah, saw a couple episodes of Archer.

Not too bad, but I'll save a full verdict for later.

I absolutely loved the pilot. Yeah, sure, Frisky Dingo was great, but I think I enjoy Archer a little more. Oedipus Complex + Axe Crazy Ex + General Stupidity (with an ASSLOAD of ridiculous sexuality) apparently makes for great late night TV.

Seriously, if he weren't such a moron, I'd vote for Archer being a Magnificent Bastard. His mother is being held at gunpoint by Cremenski, who is a Russian mole in ISIS. Archer grabs Lana and holds her at gunpoint, calling it a "classic misdirection" which Cremenski scoffs at because he doesn't care about her. He then asks Archer what would happen if he pulled the trigger and killed his mother. Lana yells "Jesus Christ, he has an erection!" Which prompts Cremenski to throw Archer's mother away and freak, saying "What the hell is wrong with you people?" Archer unloads a clip into him, about to finish a Bond One Liner referencing one he made earlier in the episode.

tl;dr Archer's an asshole, a dumb Gregory House, if you will.

Ok, I finished Clannad: After Story on Monday and I still don't know how to talk about it without potentially ruining it. See, all those Psychology classes that I hate that I've taken over the years have made me very aware of the phenomenon of priming. If I say what I think, then anyone who reads it will most likely go into it trying to think the same thing or actively trying to think something different. Either one could screw up the experience.

So all I can say is that I have a feeling like I did after I beat Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (one of my favorite games), in that I feel like I won't experience something like that again soon. Eureka Seven's still my favorite show, though.

I'm another fan of Archer. It has good quick witty dialog and, for some reason this is a big plus for me, continuity and running jokes. They had that in Frisky Dingo too, but it's not as 'out there' like FD was yet. I'd recommend giving it a watch.

Given how much I loved Battlestar Galactica (even its controversial later seasons) I'm shocked at how little Caprica interests me.

I mean it could very well turn out to be a phenomenal series, but I just feel absolutely no incentive to watch it. I really think the prequel concept was a bad idea: while I'm not remotely sure how a sequel to BSG would be handled, it'd interest me far more, even if it involved different planetary factions splintering off into different ancient tribes on Earth or something equally strange. Alternatively, have it take place in near-future Earth and have history repeat itself. Either option is infinitely more preferable to me than a story where I essentially already know the ending.
