Who has she got backing her up? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLq7ePSqFu4&feature=related) Are they just a bunch of nameless musicians, like in the group "Avril Lavigne," or "Rihanna?"

The ex-Nightwish lady? So many fanboys will hate me for this but they're better off.

As for her backers: Nameless nobodies, presumably. They get a mention on stage / albums / websites I'm sure, but that amounts to precious little when the band is named after a single person.

Case in point: Who drums for Bon Jovi? No peeking.

Now, who sings for Bon Jovi?

Could anyone else not stop laughing during that? She just sings that so cheesily. Can a singer be a large ham?

Edit: She's the ex Nightwish lead? Huh. Yeah they're better off. Totally. I mean Nordic music is usually supposed to be over the top, but not enough to make you laugh.

Okay, I didn't actually listen to it the first time, but there's not too many people with the name Tarja out there that sing, so yeah, that's the ex-Nightwish lady.

And even if the new chick they got singing for them feels like so much cheap Alternative-fodder, she meshes with the band a thousand times better than Tarja ever did.

I thought this was pretty old news.

Bwuh? I thought that was pretty much 99% of their unique sound laid in Tarja's vocal range.

Don't get me wrong - I still totally dig Nightwish. But saying it was anything other than a lateral move or a loss is honestly perplexing.

Having said thus her leaving Nightwish kind of irked me because it really reeked of her throwing her weight around. Like, "Oh I'm so important to the band that I'm going to just do what I want and threaten to leave if I don't get it." Granted it's true but that's kind of a shitty way of handling things.

Nightwish with Tarja Turunen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcyTR5mEC_E)

Nightwish without Tarja (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeOWjiRPTW8)

The newer lady sings in a more classical style than Ms. Turunen.

Tarja is obnoxiously operatic. It makes me laugh that they did Phantom of the Opera when her style is more akin to Carlotta, since she is supposed to be the annoying full-of-herself singer and Phantom is Christine's song. She is a wonderful singer, but really doesn't mesh well in any sort of band setting.

The video on youtube of them doing Phantom with all the little tween goths crying cracks me up almost every time. :P

Edit: Just relistened. Lol@closing her nose?

Seriously, they went from a power metal band with an opera singer to a power metal band with a singer who actually fits the band.

It used to be you had to get so acclimated to Tarja's style of singing just to even listen to Nightwish that every time the guy kicked in, you cringed noticeably.

Now, he and the other chick actually like, don't sound like two wolverines munching on each others genitalia.

I mean, yeah, they lost a distinctive sound, I will grant anyone that point, but I can't in this world ever imagine that it was at a loss, musically. (Even if Tarja fanboys quit the band like forevar.)

Like, with Tarja, if I played Nightwish with anyone in the car or nearby, I got more "What the samfuck hell?"'s than anything. If I play them now, people go "Well shit, who is this, it's kinda bitchin'."

As I said the new girl is a lateral move - they have an entirely different sound now, and I will admit it fits them just fine. But I don't know if I'd say that Tarja-era Nightwish really deserved such disdain. I really liked it.

EDIT: I'm hardly a musical professional though so don't take what I'm saying as anything other than some dude with a preference.

I dunno. Pretty much any other time Nightwish has come up, people admitted to having to actively try to like Tarja. I don't know if that's so great musically, but it does amount to uniqueness of a sort.

I mean, I had to give The Mars Volta a few chances on their more jam-esque stylings before I really got into it, so I can see where you're coming from.

Oh well. Long story short I can't imagine keeping up with her solo stuff any more than I did Tarja-era Nightwish. (I bought one album at the behest of a friend and had mixed feelings, but gave it a thorough try.)

I had the same thing with Machinae Supremacy's lead singer from their website release up until 2005 - it just takes some getting used to, and now I totally dig it. Acquired taste, maybe?

Regardless we can agree to disagree on this one.
