scanner wont scan

every time I try it boots up my webcam application instead. which is expecially odd as I am fairly certain they were made by different companies. Scanner is canon, webcam is, well it says "creative" on it

As retarded as this sounds, could you actually have a software conflict? Check in your Control Panel under Device Manager.

Either that, or try re-installing, just to see if that works.
