So I recently got into the Genshiken manga, which is more or less just a story that follows the daily happenings of an anime club and their activities. I'm not going to lie; I absollutely LOVED this series, cried at the end when I realized that the end was in fact near, and am looking into buying the anime now just to get more.

Apparently there is a whole genre of anime dedicated to this type of thing, known as "Slice-of-life". I'd vaguely heard of the genre beforehand, and looking back realize a couple series I adored fell into this (Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh, specifically), but I've never actively looked for something like this. Quite a few series offer this to some degree, but I wanted shows that feel like you aren't watching the group have any sort of grand lifechanging adventure, you're just watching them be... them. Any recommendations?

I also realize a lot of American sitcoms try to do this (Seinfeld especially comes to mind), but I find the laugh tracks incredibly off-putting as it removes me from the experience. Are there any shows like this that DON'T have a laughtrack?

I'd say K-On! is slice of life, unless the running subplot about wanting to be a famous band changes that. It's pretty good and cute and whatnot. I laughed.

I'm also a fan of Lucky Star, but I don't think I've seen past the second or third DVD of the English release.

Actually quite a few of those DO have laugh tracks.

Though Scrubs was good. I could never get into it too much, but when it's on I find myself unable to change the channel >.>

Hidamari Sketch defines slice-of-life. If you want to watch the pointless, everyday lives of four students going to a high school with a focus on teaching artists who all live in a six-room apartment building across the street, then this is that show. Nothing happens, nobody blows up or goes through life-changing drama, and it's totally rad.

Seriously, give it a try. You'll know if you like it within a few episodes.

Shigofumi is slice-of-death, if you ever want something with a slightly different flavor.

Haibane Renmei is a very good slice-of-life program. It does have heavy plots all the way through, but you never realise this until you try and explain the plot to someone else.

It does have a whole fantasy setting (the main characters are young people who appear in big eggs, hatch, then grow wings and get a halo), but there's no big fantasy plot, no swords and wizards, just people trying to make a living in an 18th century world.

Toradora!.

It's the best slice-of-life show I've watched. It's soooooo goood. And NonCon, I'm disappointed in you.

I worried that it might have too much plot to count.

On my end, all the slice-of-life is anime.

I'll recomend the Minami-ke series if you haven't picked that up yet. It's awesome, funny and hearthwarming.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei also has elements of a Slice-of-life, but adds a twist of its own.

Finally, one of my all time favorites: Manabi Straight.
Although it's more about school life, and has that lifechanging adventure thing going on in the background... For me, that was the series that had me tear eyed when realizing that there are no more episodes after the last one, and it certainly provides the kind of experience you seek.

All of them have a manga attached, so you can pick the format by preference.

Ojamajo Doremi is good if you like a sprinkle of magical girl with it.
