So I was wondering if anyone has been reading anything good enough to pass along?
Pretty much the only comics I have purchased in the last year were Atomic Robo and, on a whim, American Vampire issues 1 and 2 since I have basically largely given up on DC and Marvel. Of course, I still recognize they put out some good books, but I much prefer books you can enjoy standalone or in short arcs and it seems like lately everyone is choking on the newest epic storyline that spans 40 comic titles and 40 more tie-in one shots. Ugh.
I don't have a particular genre of comics I like above all else, so I am open to lots of things.
Any more good suggestions?

Warren Ellis' Planetary is, in varying proportions, an engaging story with interesting characters and plot turns, an observation on the state and history of comics, an introduction to information theory and two or three other things. And while we're at Ellis, check out Black Summer and No Hero if you want to read some slightly more in-depth explorative stories about the nature of superheroes and don't mind a whole lot of excessive violence, Doktor Sleepless for a view on how modern information technology might shape society in a year or two, Transmetropolitan for a view on how that might turn out another century or two down the line and also just a plain good series, and Nextwave for just a bit of wholesome fun with a disfunctional group of wholly irresponsible superheroes.

I feel ya. Marvel's Immortal Iron Fist was an excellent series that really doesn't need much knowlege from the comicverse to get in. Also do check out(Incase you haven't yet) their Ultimate Universe, with The Ultimates(Vol. 1 and 2 only) and Ultimate Spider-man.
Batmans and Spidermans aside, you might enjoy Fables (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_%28comics%29), a reinterpretion of various fairy tales character that were exiled from their homeland and settled in New York. The Goon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goon) is a way underappreciated story about a Mobster struggling against Zombies, Mad Gold-skinned Scientists and their Giant Robots, Mexican Giant Lizards and the like. Finally, the Y: The Last Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y:_The_Last_Man) maxiseries, dealing with the events after something kills every single male mammal, except Yorick and his pet monkey.

Why, oh WHY did this not come to my mind sooner? Strike "you might enjoy" and replace with "you must read" and I'll totally agree with MuMu on this.
And yeah, "Y" is a really good series too.

I recommended Gotham Central a while ago in a topic, which is a police procedural drama but set in the Batman universe. Regular cops have to deal with the shenanigans the Bat's villains get up to. It was pretty great and had a really dramatic ending. I highly recommend it.

Viridis you active prostitute, I swear I shall pay for your particularly cheap services and be relatively disappointed with the result.
But I figure if I must suggest something go check out I Kill Giants. It was quite an enjoyable ride for me.
