Just watched the whole series today, and I've gotta say i love it! The characters were all likable, there was no filler, and it had the perfect amount of camp. Unlike some anime, where I get burned out halfway through, I loved every second of it.
It might have edged out 08th MS team as my all time favorite mech series.

The only thing I can say I dislike about the series is that a lot of people have an absurdly strong aversion to watching it due to hype. I mean, most hype can never set a proper standard for a show anyways, so it's better to take hype with a grain of salt.
Or, you know, recognize it as standard internet behavior.
Also, for anyone who's seen the whole series, read this. (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4138412/1/Sound_of_Pulling_Heaven_Down)
It's aboot a Simon without a proper Nia influence, aka Captain GARlock. It's some pretty insane shit.

Oh man Donomni, you played the fanfic card. Well here's my favorite, (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4932014/1/In_Jiiha_Village) the story of the the girls who were making fun of Simon all the way back in episode 1.
But as a whole I still don't know how I feel about Gurren Lagann. Like, I watched it almost two years ago now, and I'm still rather obsessed with it. Some shows need time to sink in and look objectively at them so that you can rate them, but nothing has really bumped Gurren Lagann off this pedestal it made when I first watched it. For example, I can't really point out any flaws without instantly trying to justify it (The initially slow pacing after time-skip made the big scenes in episode 20 all the better!)
I mean otherwise, amazing series. Hype backlash is a bad thing though, and I know a handful of people who normally like Super Robot shows but have refused to give this a try due to the hype.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that some people seem to think it's actually Kamina: The Show. While I don't think he's a bad character I never really got what people see in him. His shades are cool, though.
I'm currently re-watching the show, actually. I finished DVD 4 yesterday and, yeah, there was filler, or rather a re-cap episode I didn't watch on it. Some people seem to think this is a good re-cap. I don't think so. The only good re-cap I ever saw was on Avatar, I didn't even notice it was a re-cap episode. Twice.
But yeah, I like the show for not taking itself very seriously.

Yeah, Recap/Clip shows are pretty crappy in general. I didn't really like this ones either. The only one I actually enjoyed was the Nadesico one.
Also Kamina is cool because you're seeing him as an awesome big brother through Simon's eye's when he's around.
Now watch the movies! Or rather just the second movie! First movie kinda sucks. But the second movie outdoes the series!

But the second movie outdoes the series!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
I really like the second movie, and it did a few things better or added scenes I expected to see in the original series (The biggest one for me being the three sisters mourning Kittan's death upon everyone else returning), but some scenes just were not done anywhere near as well. There was NO emotional impact during the KKGDB, which was by far my favorite moment in the series. There was no "Let's see you grit those teeth!"-Punch directed at Rossiu, the Anti-Spiral's big speech during the final battle lacks the impact it did, etc. Lot's done right, lot's done worse, all in all I prefer the series as a whole.
Still MUCH better than the first movie, and the last third of the movie is an absolute treat. ESPECIALLY everything after the Tengen Toppa (BIG spoilers) gets destroyed. The ten minutes or so following that were the greatest thing ever.
the last third of the movie
That's pretty much the only part I was really talking about.
And I agree on the KKGDB. For some reason Kittan's voice actor is atrocious in the movie.

I should probably get around to getting the boxsets of the series.
Also there's a few volumes of the manga at my bookstore I should probably pick those up

I really love this show, Simon is such a dynamic character throughout the story. You usually don't get the kind of complicated character growth that happens in TTGL in anime as a general rule. Not to mention Kittan's subtle growth.
Also, TTGL is probably the only show where the background characters are as interesting as the main ones. Reitei is the most awesome of the awesome.
Also, the show gets +5 for Nia's magical sherbet hair.

I was looking for something totally different, but I think this will do.

A direct link to more insanity (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/Donomni/avtt.png) because apparently it's transparent!

According to Wiki, the dubs are being released next month.

Wait, they got dubbed? Last I'd heard, the movies were being brought to the US with only subs.
*Goes to look this up*
EDIT: Yeah, no English dub. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-04-16/aniplex-america-sells-gurren-lagann-movie-dvds-in-july) Part of the interview outright asks why, with the response boiling down to "We wanted to whore this out as quickly as possible, and chances are we won't do one anyway."
Then again, this probably won't stop me from buying it. I'm more interested in getting the Parallel Works (1-4 are on Guren-hen, 5-8 on Lagan-hen) and the other bonus features, so the lack of the dub, while annoying (I like having the option, and TTGL had good Eng and Jap dubs), isn't an immediate turnoff.
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the dub anyways, so not having it is irrelevant to me. I mean, I still only have the Subs only DVDs.

I swear I read somewhere that they were going to dub the movies too, unfortunate, since I watched all of Gurren Lagann dubbed, and would probably enjoy them slightly less, since I thought they did a good job with the dub.

I can't stand subs on pretty much anything.... but especially on shows with a lot of talking during action parts.

Once again, the current anime industry wounds me.
Disappointing, but what can you do?

I Just watched the Lagann-hen, and it was disappointing... until the last 20 minutes.
I wtfawesomegasmed.
Seriously, GIANT ENERGY KAMINA!
Still, I prefer the original. My big problem with the movies is that the VA are trying to hard and overall their dialog sounds less natural.

Yeah, that's the way I see it too. On a show like, say, Azumanga Daioh, I'd rather watch it subtitled, since I won't miss anything, and the voice actors tend to be slightly better in Japanese, even though I can't understand them. And how can you translate a show about Japanese teenagers in school and make them suddenly speak English? It kinda ruins half the jokes.

Dude, he jump started the series like an RPG being used to revive someone. Simon was a wuss until he met Kamina and Kamina was the biggest boaster this side of the Milky Way. He really stole the show. Until damn near the end did they allow someone even close to the pedigree that he had. I liked the show myself but it didn't change the fact that someone really, REALLY liked him in the production studio.

It's kinda obvious when there's a giant blue energy mech version of him.

Fuckng fuck yes Kittan Zero.
So, the other day I attempted to cheer myself up by watching the entire series in one sitting. I got interrupted during Kamina's death, and haven't really had time to watch since then, but I introduced a friend of mine to the series. She got absolutely hooked, swore for the first time in two years (mostly directed at Rossiu), and finished the entire series in two days. It was quite interesting seeing the effect it had on someone who didn't know anything about it going into the series.
