View Full Version : "Overly Quoted Lines" or "THIS IS SPARTA!"

There are some quotes that people can sneak into a conversation - like the line in A Merchant of Venice; "Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands?" However re-tooled for their purposes. This is not a thread about quotes people use legitimately in a conversation. This is a thread about the lines that become ingrained in our conciousness by way of over-use or pop culture touting it in every commercial we see:

Fixed.

Or "hasta la vista, baby", that's another Arnie one.

You could have a thousand quotes in here, every blockbuster movie has been quoted way too much. This might be a good compendium of lines that people can refer to so as to avoid using any of them, though, as they are extremely annoying.

Also Merchant of Venice is probably a little more famous for another part of that quote you're giving, "If you prick us, do we not bleed?"

The worst thing you can do is quote a movie your friends haven't seen, they just stare at you in dismay.

Then again if you quote "The best thing in life is to crush your enemies, drive them before you and hear the lamentations of the women!" and you realize they haven't seen Arnie in Conan the Barbarian, do you really want them for friends?

A Zarkin' Frood

I think "English, Motherfucker. Do you speak it?" belongs to that list.
Because that's the first quote that comes to mind when I think of overly quoted lines.
Except some spartan thing and some other thing with snakes.

"But you ain't got no legs, Lieutenant Dan ..." was quoted for no good reason in a goofy voice all the time by a jerk I knew in school and I still cringe when I hear it.

What no "Yippee-ki-yay motherfucker!"? Or even a "Welcome to the party pal!"

Also anything Arnie says in Commando. Or anything he says in The Running Man. And Sam Jacksons entire "Tasty Burger" scene.

But you know what you REALLY missed that you really shouldn't? Every single line from Aliens. All of them.

I'll see your quotes and raise you rhyming quotes. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFM140rju4k)

Just so people know, I'm trying to keep it simple with mainly one quote per movie/tv show, because otherwise it'd get too cluttered. Some need more, like Arnie, because let's face it - he's got two or three flicks that people can quote verbatim. No one quotes that one movie where he was pregnant, or anything from Eraser.

Why is your list still missing anything from Aliens??!!! Gimme a "Get away from her you bitch!" or a "LET'S ROOOOOCK", or a "Nuke the entire site from orbit" or prefferably a "Game over man, game over!!"

Something man!

Also you list has 2 quotes from Dark Knight which is against your "1 line per movie" idea.

Oh and if you have to use a line from Jack Sparrow, "I've got a jar of dirt" is much more memorable.

And while you're at it you need something from LotR. I'm thinking, "One does not simply walk into Mordor", "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!", or if you're boring, "My Precious".

EDIT; Oh and you need something from Danny Glover. Use "I'm getting too old for this shit."

"This is awful; this is terribry; what a' we gonna do?"

Now, you may not quote this often, and it may not show up on any hilarious motivational posters or pictures of cats, but I just used Mrs. Onno's words to describe the ending of the movie I just watched. I'm certain I've at least used it once more during this week, and will probably continue to use this phrase long after I remember where it's from.

I can't find a link that doesn't include content I doubt we're allowed to post, however "He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy" from Monthy Python's Life of Brian crops up a lot, in my experience.

ThatPoorMessenger

Actually, also remembered That's not true, that's impossible (although you can throw that to I am your father), of course "May the force be with you" is very common. "Leave Britney Alone" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc) is also an often brought up one, there's "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiJ5rxG-DNk)...and 300 also brought "Tonight, we dine, in hell!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeNGVS2T_Rk)

Magus
06-03-2010, 11:55 AM
I second the Indiana Jones/Star Wars "I have a bad feeling about this" that is definitely one of the most memorable ones.

I'm not sure if you have any Simpsons quotes yet but similar to your "all glory to the hypnotoad" from Futurama even to today I use variations of "I for one welcome our new insect overlords" that Kent Brockman says in that one newscast.

D'oh

Magus
06-03-2010, 12:46 PM
Each character has a catchphrase like that, though, if we go into that we're going to have include Bart's "Ay Caramba!", Mr. Burns' "Excellent!", Apu's "Thank you, come again!" etc.

BloodyMage
06-03-2010, 01:01 PM
I'd argue that D'oh is by far the most recognisable catchphrase. D'oh has pretty much ascended from the show in that you can read youtube comments on videos that have nothing to do with The Simpson's and "D'oh" is used to indicate a mistake. I've seen D'oh used in that sort of situation far more than I have any other catchphrase from the Simpson's.

ThatPoorMessenger
06-03-2010, 04:47 PM
I've seen D'oh used in that sort of situation far more than I have any other catchphrase from the Simpson's."Thank you, come again" seems to hit a lot of sarcastic, unrelated contexts when people post "I quit" threads on forums for various MMOs, however.

BloodyMage
06-03-2010, 06:24 PM
I have seen it used in that context, albeit less commonly that "D'oh" but I don't really play MMOs, so that might explain why I've heard "Thank you, come again" less.

You people and your disregard for the classics.

"Something tells me we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto..."
"Here's lookin' at you, kid."
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."
"Rosebud..."

"Surely you don't mean...."
"Don't call me Shirley."

I'd say "Play it again, Sam," but that's not really a line in the movie.
