That’s the first official photo from The Walking Dead, AMC’s upcoming television adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s long-running Image Comics survival horror series. Shooting began today in Atlanta under the directorial eye of Frank Darabont, with the first episode set to air in October. The series stars Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, Sarah Wayne Callies as Lori Grimes, Jon Bernthal as Shane, Jeffrey DeMunn as Dale, Laurie Holden as Andrea and Steven Yeun as Glenn.

Truly a great day to be a Zombie fan, considering the recent quality of AMC TV Series (Breaking Bad, Mad Men) I fully expect this will be a production that will break through the Zombie Fiction ghetto and achieve mainstream success.

Zombies aren't that badly received by audiences and in fact critics are pretty fond of some of the older movies (Romero's Dawn of the Dead is still the benchmark and everything new seems to fail to meet it in their eyes, though).

This has looked pretty great for a long time. In fact I think we were talking about this in another topic of yours last summer when it was first announced. And yes, for some reason the fact that this is going to be on AMC gives it the kind of weight that it wouldn't have if it were being produced by, I dunno, Spike or something. Breaking Bad is great and if this retains the same level of quality I think I'll have a new favorite series.
