Did you ever play a Harry Potter game and think "You know what? This needs to play like Gears of War!" Well, the Deathly Hallows game looks just like that, a Gears of Potter. Hear the melodramatic score, observe how the grimdark effect is ruined by the silly wand waggling. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjnTvRtjK04)
According to Gamespot (http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/harrypotterandthedeathlyhallowspart1/news.html?sid=6264416&mode=previews) this will indeed feature a cover system (ugh) and the spells are, for the most part, different guns. The ability to confuse enemies sounds nice though.
A strange direction to take the series in, and it will probably be the best hp game yet, Depressingly.

Well, they've all been pretty terrible, so this looks no different to me. Why mess with a losing formula right? I guess they just wanted to spice things up and make it terrible in a whole new way this time.

Hey, the first game has massive nostalgia value for me. It was, like, the second play-station game I ever played. I really liked it, though in my defence, I was 8. And I'd probably hate it if I played it now. And even if I was still 8 and innocent, I probably wouldn't like this latest installment...
Yeah, they don't have to provide quality, cause they know people will buy it on brand-value alone.

I read the title, crossed my fingers and asked the world for what I wanted:
"chainsawwand chainsawand chainsawand chainsawand chainsawand."
I was dissappointed. :-( Noncon, draw Harry weilding a Chainsaw wand.
W...What?
I stopped reading after goblet of fire, so correct me if I'm wrong when I ask what the fuck that even has to do with what happens in the book? Unless the books take a COMPLETELY different turn and Harry stops being a pussy, I'm pretty sure he doesn't cast as many spells and kill as many people in the entire series as he did in that thirty seconds of trailer.

I'll stick to LEGO Harry Potter thank you very much!

Uh... first of all, yeah, the Wand Waggling made that look really silly.
My god, this entire concept seems like a really bad idea... i mean, even if this was not Harry Potter it would still look quite stupid. It's a male pre-teen version of Bullet Witch! And even bullet Witch had machine guns and Nazis!

So, Is Part 2 going to be God of War style featuring a sex mini game?

GAH! It's a 2 part game made out of a two part movie made out of one freaking book!!

I can't help but hijack the YouTube comments because they're hilarious.
Apparently if Harry gets 3 kills in a row, he gets a mug of butterbeer to restore health. If he gets 5, Hermione shows up and casts some actual good spells. If he gets 11, you switch perspectives and get to bombard the battlefield for 30 seconds as Dumbledore's Ghost. If you get to 25...well...you don't want to know.

In a way it dose, and not really at the same time.
There were confrontations, and they did go around the country searching for stuff, but it never really took the scale shown in the trailer, and they were usually hiding.

Harry does a live rendition of EQUUS. (do not do an image search)

What...
I mean, they don't even learn battle magic, so... What. I mean, it's probably the stupidest concept of the series and why I can't take it seriously. (If I were fighting a war, you'd be sure there'd be "Battle Magic" classes.)
Words, I lack them.
Jagos

Phoenix, they learned those spells on their own. Remember, Dolores Umbridge REALLY was that evil to ban the classes.

There's only like three battle spells in the books, though, if I remember correctly, or at least it seemed like they only used the spell that stuns the enemy or makes them lose their wand, and the bad guys only ever used Avada Kedavra to try and kill them.

Dumbledore's Ghost
Doesn't that seem very much at odds with how Dumbledore's death and aftermath was dealt with in the books?

If you're implying that this game is ruining the dramatic weight of Dumbledore's death, in what way did you ever doubt it was going to do that?

Look at all the combat in this game! man, the movie this is based on must be filled with battle after battle! Does that Jive with the book at all? The first half is Harry Potter hiding behind walls then leaping out and blasting enemies with spells?

In the way that I expect game adaptations of films to be absolutely devoid of any meaning of their own.
Like a Moby Dick adaptation where the PC would ride around in a boat and collect extra ambergris tokens, rather than a Christmas Carol adaptation where Scrooge puts the beat down on the Ghosts.

It's a well known fact that in Book 7 J.K. Rowling used the term "chest-high wall" more often than Harry himself.

I hope they at least include Sectum Sempera as a melee attack.

This would be a very good idea, yes.
And to the guys scoffing at the drastic difference from the book/films.
Ask yourself this: "How accurate to the film/book have movie-games ever been?"
Iron Man (2)? Only the vaguest connection to the film.
The Hulk game? Haven't played it, but I'd wager a fiver that the only thing in common is that it features the Hulk.
The Batman game, based on Batman Begins? I vaguely recall the ninja-bit being in the game, but other than that, how far does it stray from the film? (Actually, I've got a feeling that was a bad example, but still!)

If you get near the enemy and press the L3 button, Harry will stab them with his wand, killing them instantly with his "Troll Nostril Piercer" attack.

No, they didn't. So far as I can remember, they have a stun, a disarm, a startlingly effective kill spell (which nobody uses, but the bad guys seem to exploit with aplomb), and Harry ALONE can competently use a somewhat effective telekinetic attack. I guess Snape too, for that matter, since he invented it, and all that jazz. Really, that gives him (Snape) what few awesome points there are in my book.
Has no-one ever attempted to use the humble fireball, to... I donno, set the person trying to kill them on fire? It's nothing lethal... just enough to make them twitch wildly and scream? Even the adults fight stupidly in battle, and I can't imagine Aurors being any more effective than say... X-Com recruits with pistols agaisnt Ethereals.

Still looks better than all the other HP games.
Edit: At least you can shoot people in this one.

Games based off of books/movies have rarely fared well. Now it seems they are too the point of when the movie is being made they tell the developers "parody a successful game, slap on our title and make the characters look like our actors".
This is more like "Wizards 101 meets Gears of War". And the beans system always sucked, no matter what, for the whole series.

Pity they changed the in-game character designs to be more like their movie counterparts.

Not to mention that other spell that Snape invented: Sectumsempra, the one that has the target slashed with an invisible sword. If we're allowed to do that in the game, I'm forgiving it all bad aspects it'll have and buy it the day it's released.

I would if it'd be some kind of sequel. Marley's Revenge.
Make it so.
Thomas Riker finds that kind of slur against his people offensive.

I'm honestly wondering if current video game design and technology can make wand-based fighting looks less stupid. I'm not sure it can, actually.
Of course, movies can. And your imagination had better be able to, or God help you.
In many ways, I feel a HP game would be better with a Diablo-style engine.
Also, WHO WANTS TOAST?

I think the wand-waving would probably look a lot better if they made the character models do some acrobatics while casting spells, kind of like what Vanille and Sazh did with their ranged attacks. But, then it would be even less true to the movies than it already is.

So you're wanting something like Prince of Persia, but with a wand instead of a sword.
Actually, now that I think about it. That would be kinda cool.
And don't imitate Vanille's moves because she acts like a freakin' cheerleader during combat.

Instead of this Gears shit they should follow my plan of a perfect HP game and create a fully-fleshed out Persona 3/Mass Effect-ish WRPG set in the HP universe. You would create your own character, give them traits, stats, a backstory and decide their house, and then take them through the full 5 or so years of Hogwarts, romancing fine witches and stealing Snape's potions. It would give the writers the freedom to break free from the established plot and not have to worry about making sure Harry's scar looks just scarry enough or whatever.
